Costumo ter muita sorte com livros de dez reais.
Todos os livros que consegui em sebos, em promoções relâmpago na internet e que foram baratinhos me serviram histórias incríveis. Inclusive o meu livro preferido da vida, A Terra Inteira e o Céu Infinito, foi um achado perdido em um sebo e que custou menos que dois quilos de arroz no governo Bolsoasno.

Enfim, Terra Americana foi mais uma dessas gratas surpresas. No início, me senti incomodada por ser uma estadunidense contando a história de uma família mexicana. Nunca devemos estudar uma cultura vista por gente de fora, principalmente se essa gente de fora for criada nos EUA (fábrica de esteriótipos). Mas, ao estudar sobre a autora, e esse livro nos faz ir estudar, pesquisar e querer saber mais sobre os acontecimentos, entendi a motivação dela em escrever a jornada de um imigrante.

Jeanine é neta de imigrantes porto-riquenhos e seu marido, durante muito tempo, foi imigrante mexicano ilegal. Durante seu processo de escrita, ela encontrou com docentes especializados no recorte de imigração e levou a questão sobre seu ato de escrever sobre o tema e ouviu que "quanto mais gente discutindo e trazendo à luz essa temática esquecida, melhor". E foi o que ela fez.

"Em 2017, quando eu terminava de escrever esse livro, um migrante morria a cada noventa minutos no Mediterrâneo, na América Central, no chifre da África. A cada uma hora e meia. Então, são dezesseis mortes de migrantes para cada noite que eu coloco meus filhos na cama" -Jeanine

Terra Americana é um livro que trata sobre violência, sobre desespero e desesperança e por mais que ele retrate bem as situações absurdas que os imigrantes passam, saber que aquilo não é 10% de toda a dor que as famílias que imigram vivem, nos deixa com o coração miúdo. Pelo menos a minha consciência pesou e eu fui atacada por uma sensação horrível de impotência.
