Without giving much away, this group of colonists arrives to find the original colony abandoned. It's like when the Fellowship of the Ring enter the Mines of Moria expecting to find a thriving dwarf colony and instead find...Goblins! The story has kind of a Jurassic-parky feel to it as the Pathfinder team explores the abandoned facilities...except with no dinosaurs. The story subsequently evolves into the multi-planet adventure that you might expect, and we meet a new group of adversaries. The colony team didn't bring warships or Armor, so there's not much in the way of heavy backup when our heroes run into trouble. This is actually cool, because the story doesn't rely on badass mobile suits to get the good guys out of trouble.
I loved the new team, especially Carson and I loved that this is something different than what we are used to reading from the EW series as there is more of a mystery to what happened to the original colony. I’m not a fan of what happens with Ken’s brother Jared, but it goes along with the story. It is weird to see Hale in less of an action role and more as a director/leader. You can tell that it’s weird for him too.
If you are coming into this without reading the Ember Wars, then I think that you’ll be fine, but it would be helpful if you read those(they are amazing) so you can get an idea of what these legacy characters have been through.
I don't want to give away any of the storyline, but this novel is a great start to a new epic series. While it would help to have read the Ember War Saga, it's not necessary to appreciate this book, but you'll end up reading it if you like this book even half as much as I did.

I was disappointed by this Flash Gordon stuff because up until that point in the book everything was great, and it was a real page turner.
Sorry guys, it just didn't live up to my expectations.
