He didn’t do personal protection––he assassinated people. He didn’t work domestic ops––he was strictly foreign. This babysitting gig in Rochester, Minnesota surveilling a woman who may or may not be an innocent victim was absolutely not in his job description. Dragging her ass across half of America on a forced road trip infuriated him even further. He didn’t need or want to spend days locked in a car with a sexy young woman whose bucket list included drinking champagne, getting a puppy and being kissed. How had this become his life? Her purity and goodness bordered on irresistible, but if he touched her, he’d leave a black smudge on her soul.
In Eve, he saw the goodness of humanity, and Thanatos would storm the gates of Hell to protect her; but a creature of purity and light could never belong to the assassin who was named after a God of Death.

About the author

Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class of 13 students (yes, that is thirteen, eleven girls, and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full-time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing, Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes, cold...don't judge.)

Dolan never got close to anyone. When he was ten years old, he witnessed his parents being assaulted then murdered, before he was assaulted himself and left for dead. He’d spent his entire adult life searching for the man responsible while performing his job duties as an assassin named after a god of death for Guardian. Dolan watched Eve as he was instructed, but he didn’t believe her innocence or naiveness. By the time he realized she really didn’t know anything, Eve was in danger and he was fighting the feelings he had developed for her.
At first I genuinely liked Eve. She had been dealt a horrible hand and was used and tested by the doctors that had lied to her for her entire life. She believed what she’d been told about having a rare cancer because she knew nothing else and had no reason to discount what the doctors had told her. When Eve learned how much danger she was truly in, and Dolan told her who he really was, I liked how she knew she could trust Dolan and how they became so close.
What I did not like was how Eve was adamant that killing was wrong and judged Dolan for protecting her and saving her life. The people he killed were trying to kill them, yet she acted all high and mighty and arrogant. At one point, there’s a man with a knife at her throat and Dolan has to quickly react to save her life. He was shot and stabbed in the process and nearly died, while several others lost their lives. Yet Eve’s response was to scream and back away from Dolan as if terrified of him because he didn’t allow the bad guys an opportunity to surrender. This was his job and so many lives were saved because of the people he eliminated. Eve was told the unbelievable things these men had done, yet she took months making Dolan feel bad about himself before coming back to him, but still giving him an ultimatum about never doing it again. Yeah, she was too weak for a man as strong as him.
age difference between lovers, the storyline completely original, and the action throughout the story was great!
The book does follow the others in that the Shadows come out into the light. In this case, both the hero and the heroine have had something taken from them, perhaps in Eve's case several somethings. Her whole life was controlled and even when she thought she was free she wasn't, not really. Thanatos' life is very similar to hers in that way.
Eve did act like a selfish bitch but she has a strong moral compass and she was torn. She was lead to believe that she was going to die but then her world imploded and all that she knew was taken from her. In a way, it was like being born again and having to learn things all over again.
We were introduced to Tempest whom everyone thought was dead. His story I hope will be a good one because well there are so many questions that need to be answered and can he recover from the torture and whatever else he has been through.
Things that were not my favorite with this particular book...
The repetitive scenes - its nice to see both POVs in some scenes but when the actual dialog is repeated verbatim, it is confusing ro me and I wonder if the author made an error or if I missed something. Luckily it didn't happen but a couple of times but between Chps 18 & 19 I questioned if there was a error in editing. It is just not something I like an noted.
I had a hard time liking Eve. I get that she led a sheltered atypical life, but her my way about life/death is the only acceptable outcome just turned me off.
The quick way things wrapped up and they got their HEA just seemed out of place with all the detail before - especially since it didn't really seem that Eve truly accepted Thanatos as he was. Again, the way I processed the story.
Stratus seems to have taken a back burner since Dixon - which is fine, but with so much time passing that storyline is getting less plausible and makes me wonder what was the point.
So 4 stars because on its own is a well told story. It just seems to be a bit superficial in areas compared to other books in the Guardian World Ms. Michaels has created.

A great story as usual great characters and character development. I like the was main characters from other books return as side or supporting characters in the current book.
Out of all the characters from the previous books I thought these two were the least compatible, part of the reason Thanatos had been in the shadows much longer than the other, with an even darker origin, and motive making Eve was the complete polar opposite to him.
It was also great to see Thanatos on action on an op not just living off his rep in the book. So many threads and characters still to go. I can't wait to see what happens next.

He realises she has done nothing in her life and tells her to make a list of what she would like to do now she knows she will live.
People are chasing them. So called 'friends' say Eve has been kidnapped instead of being in protective custody.
Thanatos and Eve get very close until they rescue Tempest. It is then predictable. Loved the story though.
