Fabulous - and relevant, with a wonderfully novelistic approach.
What began last season with a somewhat unusual plot, featuring a vengeful serial killer in Ciudad Juarez, has developed into a marvelously rich tapestry of interwoven stories and examination of cultural traditions. This season also features the most marvelous villainess ever, the incredible, seemingly logical, Eleanor Nacht, a tattooed and shunned Mennonite who works as an accountant/fixer for the Mexican drug cartel headed by the violent campesino druglord, Fausto Galvan. Eleanor has been terribly betrayed by both her family and society, and the only thing she really cares about is revenge, through in the course of her work, while always invoking the [ spiritual] light, she manages to leave a bloody trail -and do away with any man who oversteps himself.
In this season, the two journalists, the drunken and cynical Daniel Frye and the hardworking realist Adriana Mendez, discover links between the CIA, corrupt American banks, a powerful Mexican corporation and the cartel.
Texas police detective Sonya Cross, meanwhile, faces her own demons concerning the death of her sister, and learning that life is not entirely black and white humanizes in the process, becoming more mature and compassionate. Marco Ruiz , her Juarez counterpart, must face the fall -out of his own choices and the loss of his family-while finally realizing he can no longer turn a blind eye to the rampant and abusive corruption in the Juarez police department.
Weird loner Steven Linder and lovely Eva, a girl raped by the Juarez police, seemingly fall in love-and the hapless Miss Charlotte, her idiotic lover Ray, and her faithful partner Caesar are terrorized by both the DEA and the cartel.
A taut script and terrific acting will keep you on the edge of your seat--but, at least for me, Franka Potente, as Miss Nacht, was so original, and her character so insane, so beautifully brought to life by the actress--that I couldn't get enough of her and her antics. Marvelous and much better than the first season.
