4.0 out of 5 starsHighly recomend these stories and rhe author but his fact checking needs work
Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2020
I have read several of the Camel Club stories and really do enjoy them. I've read many other stories by this author and really liked them as well.
My problem with them is a great big gaping hole in the Camel Club series and, to a lesser extent, all of his othr books. He seems to be unaware that it is completely illegal for the CIA to operate in ANY capacity within the territory of the United States. Any reader of good spy fiction is aware of this. The FBI, in fact, would actively oppose any involvement of te CIA and would never cooperate with them. Not only do these stories ignore this he actually invests the CIA with the power of criminal investigatonand arrest within the USA. Epic Fail on the part of these stories. This is way too big a departure from reality to be put down to poetic license for a story of this genre. I hope it was done in ignorance of the rules because otherwise he's countimg on his readers to be too igmotant to notice and care.
I'm one of tbe later books in this series a character instslls an electronic devise in a computer that will cause the CPU to fail in such a way as exlplode and kill anyone within 15 feet. You do realize that computer savy people are among those most likely to read books, right? And that that scenario is laughably silly?
It's true that fiction requires the suspension of disbelief on the part of the reader and these moments (except the CIA thing) are relatively minor plot devices to make the storyline work. I'm generally OK with that but, like Tom Cruise's motorcycle tires magically changing from street tread to knobbies as he goes from pavement to asphalt and back again, some of these requests of the reader stretch the patience and tolerance.
All that being said I find his work entertaining with good, well written characters and situations, the above notwithstanding, well thoughtout and fast paced with the right mix of humor thrown in thanks to the interesting and unlikely mix of characters in the club.
I very much recommend these books but, due the flaw in the basic premise I can't give it 5 stars

The Camel Club started very slow for me. I had issues keeping all the characters straight. There were so many! I did enjoy the last half of the book once I was clear on who was who. By the end, I was reaching out for the second book.

The Camel Club begins with the apparent suicide of a government agent but this is far from the truth. Four men are witness to this "suicide". The four men are conspiracy theorists who seek the truth behind the conspiracies. They called themselves the Camel Club.

Oliver Stone, Milton Farb, Caleb Shaw, and Reuben Rhodes have been meeting in secrecy for many years. Unluckily, their last meeting place makes them a witness to this crime. Their lives will be in grave danger and if found, they might not live the week and perish at the hands of some very powerful people.

As the story progresses, we get to discover who Oliver Stone is and his past ties to the USA government. We also meet Agent Alex Ford who's a secret service agent who has had a good honest career. When Alex starts digging into the murder, he's demoted to White House protection detail. Unbeknownst to Alex, the stability of the USA is about to be challenged. Alex and the Camel Club are the only hope to prevent war.

The last part of the book is action-packed. The pages flew fast in a race to know the outcome. I couldn't wait for all the pieces to fall together.

My favorite character was Oliver Stone. A close second was Alex Ford. I was left wanting to learn more about the other three remaining Camel Club members. They all seem to have a very interesting past.

Alex Ford is a Secret Service agent on White House detail with three years to go until retirement. He's tempted to coast the rest of the way through his career, until a "suicide" that seems too cut-and-dried has him asking questions. Oliver Stone is a protester who has a tent in the park across the street from the White house. He and his three friends know more about the death of Patrick Johnson than just about anyone, since they witnessed his murder. The FBI is willing to write Johnson's death off as a suicide, since it appears he shot himself, left a note, and drugs were found in his home, but Johnson's fiancée isn't buying it. Her suspicions have agent Ford and his rookie partner investigating and getting themselves in hot water with the Secret Service. Alex can't let it go, though, when suddenly several terrorists suspiciously kill each other off. He's demoted down to protection detail in Brennan, Pennsylvania, when the president makes a campaign stop in his hometown, but this puts him unwittingly in the middle of an intricate plot against the president of the United States. Alex doesn't want to listen, but Oliver Stone and his Camel Club hold the keys to unraveling the mystery and saving the world from World War III.

This was mostly an engaging suspense thriller with warm, comfortable characters who were ordinary people with extraordinary pasts. The plot unfolded at a steady pace, the story moving smoothly from character to character while the suspense built. Unfortunately, the plot took a ridiculous turn near the end (8 hours to Armageddon?) and some of the characters' actions were extremely unrealistic. Had a bit of restraint been used rather than going over the top, the same amount of tension could have been woven into the story without getting silly. The rest of the book, and the story itself, were engaging, if a bit anti-American in a coddle-the-poor-misunderstood-terrorists sort of way. If one's beliefs lean that way, it's a plus, I suppose. In all, this was a book that kept me turning the pages, and I will read Baldacci again

Not sure if this author writes specifically for men but this book was techo overload for me!!! Pages of weapon specs etc bored me to tears. I love a good thriller and did enjoy this book but the endless pages of machine and weapon descriptions had me flicking pages to get to the guts of the story. Maybe just the author wanting to fill pages in some places it was like reading a gun catalog. But a good yarn all the same.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and boring

I'm still struggling to finish this. I like everything Baldacci writes, even liked the first Camel Club I read, but this...is the most boring, ludicrous thing I've read in a long time. I keep feeling he is praising radical Islam and trying to make me "understand" them. Maybe when I finally get to the end, it will make more sense, but this is the last Camel Club "adventure" I will waste money and time on. Nothing against my own gender, but it has a very feminine feel to the narrative and if Oliver Stone is such a bad a#$, why does he schlep around, all droopy and weird? Just not my cup of tea. .

3.0 out of 5 stars John Wayne gone wrong :-(

I have been reading a lot, since I was a teenager. And since I got my first Kindle 3 years ago, the obsession has only grown. Thus, books come up often in conversation, and many a book lover has recommended "Baldacci." One friend loaned me a Baldacci book with the caveat that I must read Camel Club first. So I went to my Kindle and quickly downloaded "Camel Club"

I could not be more disappointed. Baldacci wants us to believe that the CIA / FBI and every other government investigative department each have their own secret departments and rogue elements. And these folks, along with a small group of disenfranchised misfits have never met a conspiracy theory they didn't love. Each and every character has a John Wayne complex and armed with the truth and the means to achieve their truth they will righteously break any and all laws necessary - Think Ollie North.

Then are the other guys who will barter or screw up any and all Governments if the price is right.
Once James Fennimore Cooper wrote about happy loner outcasts who quietly, guarded their land and honor. Baldacci has hundreds of spies and war merchants who want to either bring the world to nuclear holocaust, or not depending on their political views.

This book is layer upon layer of dots some connected, some not - Rambos - and suicide bombers. One wonders why the world is not in flames. After the first 20% the book does move rather quickly, but none of it is fun or believable. I would recommend Ken Follet, Jeffrey Archer, Pat Conroy or Dennis Lehane a thousand times before recommending Baldacci. And never pass over "Destiny of the Republic" or "The Greater Journey" and "Brave Companions" (just saying)
Also, the Kindle offers many great authors for FREE - Austen, Dickens, Cooper, Conan-Doyle - go for any of these.
And for kicks: as for me, give me Harry Potter or Twilight!

Book description indicted it was NEW. Just received book. Writing was on inside cover, cover was damaged and worn, definitely not NEW. There was a noticeable large stain on the actual book cover like something was spilled on book and tried to clean it. Very disappointed.

Started off with more politics than I cared for. Camel Club characters and activity were well written. Enjoyed most of the characters. Haven't decided if I will read rest of series but most likely will since Baldacci is such a good writer.

The Camel Club was recommended to me, but, for me, there were too many starts and back stories before the true plot unfolded. Maybe that's because it takes place in Washington D.C., these days a land of intrigue and deceit and liars. I'm having an easier time with subsequent Camel Club novels. These days a main plot line is that all is not what it seems.
