He was more than a bully, he was what living nightmares were made of. It started as a childish game played between two friends, which ended in heartbreak. She knew him once.
A long time ago they may have even called each other friends. That was before she moved away, before her mother married his father, and before an entire life fell apart. She lost friends, popularity, and a future. This was supposed to be a fresh start, but it was real life hell.
Vance Preston used to be a poor boy with a soft smile and kind eyes. He used to be her friend. Now he’s God’s gift to women (his words not hers), disgustingly handsome, and filthy rich. He can do whatever he wants, say whatever he wants, and hurt whomever he wants. No one can stop him, and no one dares to. He might as well be god. He dares her to defy him and fight back. He promises he won’t stop until he hurts her.
But she’s not afraid, because you can’t break something that’s already broken.

But, the one time she takes a dare, changes the course, of everyone's lives. Leaving, Vance with deep-seated hatred, and a taste for revenge against, Ava. But, when five years have passed, and the results of that night, leave the two people who caused it, happy and in love. Then, what?
Well, they get married. This makes Ava and Vance, step-siblings. What is for sure, is it doesn't make either, of them happy. As for, Vance he becomes, a Bully and a preditor, who instills fear and enjoys it. He’s a coward for sure. Not telling her why, she's a liar, because then he would have to deal with his own, emotions.
There is a defining moment when his friend, Clark points out to him an important fact, concerning his anger. As to what his anger may be about, what he was told doesn't fit what he's seeing, and getting to know, referring to, Ava. Van wants to hate her for a lie, she may not have committed. And the anger is at himself because he loves, her. After all, he knows deep down, that the lie doesn't fit.
Clark advises that Van get to know her. Clark has, and he truly likes her as a person. But, when Van, starts to believe her the true manipulator surfaces and reinforces the original lie he was given five years ago. Now, his revenge burns even hotter for her.
***Let me just say, this book is intense. If you have been bullied, verbally abused, or sexually abused beware.*** That being said, Ava is one strong girl, to put up with so much over, the five years.
One, living with the guilt of telling the truth of that night, she lost everything. Two, she lost her innocence, her friend, her home, her family, her mom, and her sense of security. Not to mention now having to deal with her mom’s new family. But, the doo-doo is about to fly.
Vance dad tells him that Ava said he threatened her to steal her moms jewelry - fast forward 4 years later and Vance is still seething and now Ava is in college with him.
Better read than the first book because Vance actually apologises to Ava for treating her so badly and vows to make it up to her.
So a few things, 1st) both Ava's mom and Vances dad are very selfish people. Getting into an affair (which I called it), lying about it for years, telling lies instead of truths. Hurting each others families because of it. 2nd) I get Vance being angry, because he was manipulated by his father on multiple occasions and instead of telling/owning up to the truth. But his action toward Ava were unacceptable. It was sever bullying and emotional abuse. 3rd) When Ava sucker punched Clark in the throat was by far my favorite scene in the book. I laughed my ass off at that part I literally had to re-read that part. Like she warned him and he was shocked that she went through with it. And finally 4th) I am glad that both Ava and Vance were able to get passed all the lies and heartache so that can have a real shot at happiness. Also that ending, I so have to read the next book The Secret. Clark just announcing he has a girlfriend like WTF!!?

Can be read as a standalone. Even though characters from The Bet pop in
POV:Dual
Vance and Ava were childhood best friends, until both their parents pack up and leave.
Vance blames Ava for his parents divorce. All because of what he believed was the truth and Ava was the one lying.
Years later Ava's back for her Mothers and Vances Fathers wedding. Much to Vances disgusted that Ava is his stepsister, the treacherous liar for the upheaval of his life.
Ava is in just as much pain, she hasn't seen her Mother in years, leaving her with her alcoholic Father, who is now in rehab.
Coming face to face with Vance after all these years, she's baffled by why he hates her so much.
She puts up with his verbal abuse and bullying.
Until Vance discovers that Ava was telling the truth all along.
Again with some twists and turns. This was an enjoyable page turner.

There is abusive and unsafe written all over the book.
Love the authors style and that’s the only reason I was able to finish the book. Even though I felt on edge all the time. This is my first stepbrother bully romance so I can’t compare. But I will not keep this book since I know there is no chance I read again.

I really really enjoyed The Secret! Gah my stomach was in a knot desperate for them to find out the truth, for the misconception to be cleared up! It was painful to watch the two wonderfully portrayed characters go through so much hurt, anguish and misconstrued betrayal. Brilliantly written, the authors nodded to previous characters although this can be read as a standalone.
