A sexy, single dad listen narrated by award-winning duo Sebastian York and Andi Arndt.
Single dad Andrew Beckwith has already devoted his life to one girl - and as far as he's concerned, she's all he needs. The inked, rough-around-the-edges bad boy left his reckless ways behind six years ago when his daughter Bell was born. When Bell's mother walked out of their lives, Andrew vowed never to let another woman close enough to hurt them again.
Amelia isn't just another woman. She's an independent, smart, and savvy businesswoman who doesn't have time for sex, much less love. In the midst of a drawn-out, bitter divorce, all she wants is to bury herself in work. But when sharp-tongued Amelia and stubborn Andrew cross paths, sparks fly - and burn.
After all, it's not as if opposites ever attract.
"A five-alarm fire of a book that will melt your e-reader...and a father-daughter relationship that will make little hearts pop out of your eyes." (Lex Martin, USA Today bestselling author)

I also loved the scene that is referenced by the title…and the idea that the first taste is what got them where they are now. I loved the couple of times it is referenced in the story, that it is always clear that they know…whether they admit it or not, that it was a first and not an only.
This book had it all. Stories about single fathers, at least in my opinion, can be really good or they can get bogged down in the parenting story so completely that they lose the romance and the adult relationship. The adult relationship appeared in this and wow was it HOT. At one point, I thought my Kindle was going to go up in flames. It and I survived, but just barely.
In this case, Jessica Hawkins makes this not a story about a single father, but about a man who is a father. Let me explain what I mean. Yes, Andrew has a daughter. But this is not all he is, it is not what defines him, but rather a part of who he is, to his core, and while Bell matters in the story, she is allowed to be a part of his life, a part of who he is. Does that make sense? I guess what I am trying to say is one of the things that drew me to Andrew, and to Bell, is that they were whole people, they were a part of a unit but also people alone.
Amelia was great. I loved her independence and her imperfections. I loved that she was nuanced. Yes, she was being petty about the divorce, I love her strength, her willingness to not let Reggie take everything from her, even if she had to hold on with the tips of her fingers. I love that she let Andrew show her that there were other things she could love, other things that she could value. And, I love that ultimately it was her choice to move forward in a new direction. I was occasionally a little frustrated with her, well with both of them, but I could see why they were afraid.
I loved that they became more afraid the more they started to realize how much they each cared. I also loved the scene where the author puts Andrew in a position of having to trust himself, to trust Amelia, to trust what he believes in his heart and to behave accordingly even though his actions and what she tells him to do are different. It is not possible to tell more without spoiling, but I loved this scene. It is probably one of my favorites in the whole book.
There was a lot of angst, a lot of push and pull, a lot of togetherness and doubt both from Andrew and Amelia. Andrew figured out first that he wanted more with her, but ironically he is the last one to really open up, to let her in.
I loved the last part of the book, as you get to see the "next" in the story. There is also an epilogue, which I enjoyed, but I loved seeing them in the next part of their journey, it was worth the angst. It is a credit to the author that the pacing was strong even during the push and pull. Hawkins never lets you get too annoyed with Andrew or Amelia, yes there are points of frustration, but she never lets you get to the point where you are so frustrated you are done. And this is quite a talent.
This one goes on my list of books I will read again.
4.5 stars!!!!
“There’s bravery in facing fear when it’s easier to bury it.”
There is something about a single dad that puts his daughter first before life itself that has every woman’s heart melting into a mushy puddle of goo and Jessica Hawkins delivered one such man in the form of Andrew Beckwith. There was nothing I disliked about this man AT ALL. He was perfection. He was the epitome of what every father should strive to be, he made the best out of a bad situation, he didn’t give up, he fought, he changed, he was selfless, his daughter was his life and he was hers, it was stunningly beautiful.
For those that have read A Slip of the Tongue, Andrew is Sadie’s brother and this is his story. Sadie and Nathan do appear throughout so you get to catch up with them too. While this can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend you read A Slip of the Tongue, because it was another great book and we all love a great book!
“My sister says you’re disturbingly hot, but I’m just disturbing.”
Andrew had been burned badly, he and his girlfriend became parents at a young age, it was unplanned. He threw himself into being the breadwinner, to provide a home for his family which meant that his girlfriend was left to bring up the baby alone a lot of the time, she couldn’t cope, she walked. Andrew stepped up to the plate and hasn’t looked back since. Andrew had a great support network, friends, colleagues and of course Sadie and Nathan had all played their part and it was stunning to see everyone pull together to make a life for Andrew and his Bell. Bell was his world, his reason for everything and she knew it. She was a daddy’s girl through and through and had him wrapped around her little finger. She dictated his life, had done for years, he hadn’t been celibate, he had his moments but no-one had made him want to change, but he hadn’t met his game changer…yet.
“Doesn’t anyone ever say no to you?”
“And get away with it? Just Bell.”
Andrew was Sadie’s brother, Amelia was Sadie’s boss, Andrew visits his sister at work, his path crosses with Sadie, it wasn’t the best of introductions, but alas, their paths would cross again and so the love story begins.
“It actually does mean something. Maybe it means a lot.”
Amelia was a business woman first and foremost but underneath that no nonsense, frosty attitude was a woman that had been burned badly. Currently going through an acrimonious divorce she was at her wits end with her ex and all his dirty handed shenanigans. She was tied to him and she wanted it severed but he wasn’t going to give her up without a fight despite the fact he deserved nothing, not even an ounce of respect.
“You can’t be bought, Amelia. Teach him a lesson.”
Andrew and Amelia were definitely opposites, but opposites do attract. Amelia, rich business woman, thousand dollar clothes…Andrew, owner of a garage, tattoos, greasy, motorbike and the father to a beautiful child. But these two sought a night of solace in each other but gradually realised that one night would never be enough. These two were each other’s confidantes, opening up to each other which neither deemed possible. They stabilised one and other and gave each other something they never knew they wanted. Yes, it has its ups and downs, yes it has its teething troubles, but underneath were two people that slowly fell in love, no matter whether they wanted to or not. The heart wants who the heart wants, we just left waiting for the brain to catch up.
“I’m a man, Amelia. I treat women like treasure. I treat my girlfriend like the love of my effing life. And I treat an a-hole like an a-hole.”
This was such a beautiful story on so many levels. From Andrew’s love for Bell and then for Amelia and from Amelia’s love for Andrew and then for Bell. This ticked so many boxes, was so emotional and totally unputdownable. I just loved every single bit.
“It’s fine if you don’t need me…but I need you.”
When Andrew first met Amelia her being the uptight city girl mistaking him for the plumber had me cracking up, their banter was great but he immediately knew what he wanted and their first no strings attached night together was oh my lord.
Naturally the no strings attached started to get complicated with you guessed it, strings.
What I loved about this book was that both Amelia and Andrew were so damaged but they were finding a reason to hope again in eachother.
Andrews daughter bell was well written and added a lot of heart to the book.
I would have loved a longer epilogue to see where this unconventional family ended up.

It's a great read from start to finish with good characters and dialogue but something was missing for me and I just don't know what it was as I love this author.
It's well written and quite romantic with just the right amount of protagonists.
I think there was more to explore eg. Her eating issues relating to her mums emotional abuse.
What happened with bells mum.
Do read it because this author is brilliant but I just wanted more.

Having read and loved Slip Of The Tongue I was eager to get my hands on this book. This is the story of Sadie's brother, Andrew. I found it quite hard going to fall for Andrew and Amelia for a long way into the book, they just didn’t grab me to begin with. I just couldn't see them gelling, I didn't feel the 'kapow' of love. It seemed that Amelia's feelings about children jumped from one extreme to the other, with no build up.
.
The story picked up in the end and gave me a bit of excitement. I have to say that I did HATE Reggie, Amelia's soon to be ex-husband! What an absolute creep!
Andrew is still reeling after four years from his ex-girlfriend disappearing in the night and leaving him with his three year old daughter, Bell. He no longer believes in love, just sex for sex sake. He meets stuck up boss lady, Amelia and likes what he sees. Amelia has her demons and she feels the same about love as Andrew, so one night is a great idea to her.
A lot of their relationship is dealing with past issues and their insecurities. The last part of the book was great and I loved the ending. The writing was good, another time, another mood may have had me more involved in their story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was a nice 'boy meets girl' romance but boy and girl have issues with previous relationships; there is not too much angst to cause me sleepless nights. This was a well written book that I could curl up on the sofa with and lose myself in the 'will they / won't they get together' scenario. There is something super sexy about a single dad and Andrew was right up there with as a BFF I could fall in love with!
A thoroughly fantastic read and definitely an author I will follow for future releases.

I loved Slip of the tongue but this book is just SO much more. It's super hot, sexy, and just amazing!
I now have a bad case of book hangover!
