Single mother Beth lives a good life. She’s the practice manager for a surgery (medical) clinic, has two children, and lives in a nice home. She has friends—even though they are older than her. Life is not without problems. Beth’s elderly father lives in a Senior care facility after having suffered a stroke, and her mother left when Beth was only ten years old.
The story opens as the date of her mother’s sixtieth birthday approaches. Beth was bitter over the abandonment but has often thought of the woman who gave birth to her and wonders if she’s still alive. When a woman shows up on Beth’s doorstep claiming to be her mother, she readily accepts this person into her life.
That’s when things begin happening—Beth misplaces things, she’s convinced a man is watching her, and Beth’s friendships begin to fall apart. Things go from bad to worse. What’s more, Beth has a secret from her past she’s kept from everyone, and she’s terrified it could cost her everything, including her children and her job.
It didn’t take me long to figure out who was responsible for all the strange events. That part was obvious. I had a problem with Beth being portrayed as such a weak-willed person. Why was she so blind to the obvious?
There was a secondary “surprise” reveal near the end, but I figured that out as well. Still, this book intrigued me enough to continue reading it. Although it wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read (far from it), I liked it.
If you’re looking for fast-paced psychological fiction, this isn’t for you. But if you enjoy slow-burners that delve a bit into the psychological aspects of love, life, and loss, it’s a decent book.

When Beth’s mother unexpectedly turns up in her life, everything starts to go wrong threatening to ruin her life. I have to admit that I spotted the twists very early on in the story. Not sure if it’s because I read lots of books in this genre or it was my gut instinct that kept me on the right track but either way I was correct in my thinking. This didn’t spoil my enjoyment of this book though. I could appreciate all the red herrings and the build up of suspense and tension. What Beth was going through still affected me and I was desperate for the truth to be uncovered.
The Happy Family is very much a story of secrets and lies and how they can control us. Whilst I may have guessed the twists, this still made for an enthralling page turner of a read that I raced through. This is my first novel by the author and as she writes in one of my favourite genres, I look forward to reading more by her.

Beth a mum if two lives a busy life as a practice manager at a doctor's surgery whilst also looking after her dad who is in a care home after suffering a stroke .Her life is chaotic but good until one day a stranger turns up on her doorstep claiming to be her mum .Beth believes her due to the tattoo but very soon Beth's life is turned upside down and things start going horribly wrong .
Definitely worth a read I enjoyed it .
