At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy's instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea's forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors from both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?
They have no choice. If the demigods don't succeed, Gaea's armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

We also find out with why Nico is so grumpy and not very talkative with Annabeth anymore like he used to as a preteen. I had my suspicions that Nico might have liked liked Percy throughout the book but they were confirmed in this book by Cupid himself.
This book is really good and we learned a lot. Leo even visited Calypso and we learned what that line in the prophecy about a promise was really Leo promising Calypso to free her from her prison so that one day they could open up a car repair garage/food place.
A lot of the characters developed in this book. Leo's ADHD hasn't been too bad, Piper can charmspeak things to being actual living things while also learning how to fight, and being in Tartarus both changed Percy and Annabeth while growing them more together. Rick Riordan did just a good job on this book that I can't believe that we will only have one last book of Percy Jackson/the Heroes of Olympus books left. It is just so sad in my opinion as I love both book series and I just don't want it to end at all.

For all the people saying that homosexuality is being aimed inappropriately at children, have you considered that heterosexually is being taught to them from infancy? Homosexuality only seems wrong to you because in some misguided way, you’ve declared it taboo.
These books will stand the test of time and undoubtedly give more young people the courage to live their lives with as true selves.
The changing points of view allows the reader to keep up with the simultaneous events — sometimes jumping from one place to another at the most inopportune times, other times giving us just enough breathing room to relax for a millisecond. We follow Percy and Annabeth’s impossible and grueling journey through the most horrible of settings — in a surprising turn of events, there is more than just a horde of evil enemies down there… (a silver light as the end of this dark, dark tunnel?) As the larger group makes its way to Greece, they inevitably must separate — whether by choice or to divide and conquer their smaller errands along the way. Jason is able to get some insight into Nico’s antisocial behavior and inner turmoil. Piper and Hazel are able to bond as the only girls on the Argo II. Leo… experiences a change. As does Frank, who is becoming tougher and more commanding for the sake of his friends — he is such a caring and cuddly guy… until you mess with his crew.
I think Percy’s thoughts really sum it up quite well: “When he started looking back on the war with Kronos as the good old days — that was sad. [...] Their lives just got more and more dangerous, as if the Three Fates were up there spinning their futures with barbed wire instead of thread just to see how much two demigods could tolerate.”

PERCY JACKSON, SON OF POSEIDON
Percy was reallllllly awesome in this book. Really he was just fantastic, though I'm not sure if he'll have a POV in the next book since he had one in this book. He and Annabeth's experience in Tartarus obviously brought them closer than ever before, and I found Percy's "death scene" so dramatic!!!!!
ANNABETH CHASE, DAUGHTER OF ATHENA
My gurl Anna was great in Tartarus, but if she had her knife she would'nt have been the damsel in distress. Poor Annabeth was isolated from her mother, who, like a couple other gods and goddesses, is torn between her Greek and Roman sides. Overall she was amazing and a worthy daughter of the wisdom goddess. Also, after this book I realized she has LONG hair not SHORT hair. Darn fanfictions!
JASON GRACE, SON OF JUPITER
Jason... oh..... uh....... Sorry fans of Jason....... I gotta be honest.
HE IS A RIDICULOUS BLONDE SUPERMAN WHO IS FULL OF HIMSELF!!! HE HAAAAAATES PERCY BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT PERCY IS MORE POWERFUL!!! HE TOYED WITH REYNA'S HEART! HE MADE HER FEEL LIKE HE LOVED HER THAN STARTED DATING PIPER!! AGHHHHHH I HATE YOU JASON GRACE!!!!!!
PIPER MCLEAN, DAUGHTER OF APHRODITE
I know what I said about Jason, but I actually like Piper. She's not really like children, especially daughters, of the love goddess are portrayed most of the time. In the previous book, I enjoyed how Piper was torn between saving herself and Jason, or herself and Percy. It's the usual "one-girl-two-boys" situation that you'd find in most of these type of books. Piper slays with that charmspeak too!
LEO VALDEZ, SON OF HEPHAESTUS
The only thing I didn't like about Leo: He nearly got in the way of my precious Frank/Hazel ship, and that was pure EVIL....... anyway, I think he will succeed in getting back to Ogygia to find Calypso (how cute!) and Caleo will come true! Not much more to say about this joker, except......
DON'T EVER GET IN THE WAY OF MY FRANK/HAZEL SHIP AGAIN!!!!!!!
FRANK ZHANG, SON OF MARS
Thanks for reading this very long review
I loved that there were characters that appeared in the previous books briefly mentioned, in some cases like Grover, but also sort of a main character like Bob. I loved Bob he was so cute. I also loved how we got more information from Nico and eveything made much more sense when his secret came out. It was brilliant.
Just like the rest of the series this book was completely and totally brilliant. It grabbed you from the first page and did not let you go until the very end. It was fantastic with its twists that I just did not see coming and it really makes you excited and impatient for the last book in the series because you just cannot wait to find out what will happen with these heroes.
I appreciate that I have not been to fond of the second and third Heroes of Olympus Books as there didn't feel like there was much in the way of Character Development and it felt a little less exciting.
I'm glad to say that I cannot give the same criticisms for this book.
The characters feel real for me again and all the fun of Percy Jackson has come back.
I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but particularly Percy, Frank, Jason, Nico and Hazel undergo journeys of self discovery with quite a revelation at Cupid's Temple (I admit I anticipated it, since PJ5 - The Last Olympian, but it's still powerful).
The monsters are as epic as ever and Tartarus in just incredible.
If you love Percy Jackson & Heroes of Olympus this is definitely the best yet.
