It is like Harry Potter on Heroin.

It is like Harry Potter on Heroin. Very dark and can be overly graphic at times. But the story is riveting and the character development is very well thought out. I am reminded of an old quote "A character is not defined by their success but by their faults."

Please, please, please give me a Season 3.

What a fantastically adult fantasy show. I love the acting. I love the storylines. And most of all I love that nothing is simple and you never are sure what will happen next. I love the exploration of what happens when you're denied that what you want most and what happens when good intentions go terribly, terribly wrong. All these characters are flawed and vulnerable and interesting to watch, even as they try to become adults in the crazy world(s) of magic they're trying to survive in. Kudos to the writers and actors for making this funny and tragic at the same time, while not making it unrelentingly gloomy and dehumanizing.

Let me start off by first saying I read the Magicians Trilogy before watching the series. The series follows fairly closely with the book and all main objectives. Although the end result may be roughly the same, how the end result is achieved is quite different. While this is not a bad thing, as it allows for those of us who have read the books to enjoy this series due to the surprise of how the characters are accomplished. The cast in The Magicians are also great picks and very closely resemble the characters in the books.

I give it 4 stars because there are a few events that are just flat out wrong and there's also things in the series they've back tracked on. Things they said in season 1 are different from what they're saying now.

Not as enjoyable as first season

Seems like a lot of focus on dark aspects. The constant repetition of the rape scene is off-putting. Yes we know what happened, is it really required to show it every freakin episode?

Couldn't wait for Season 2 to come out on Netflix & not all episodes were available on Cable or Prime Video so we purchased the whole season instead. I'm glad we did, it's a good enough show to re-watch and we enjoy the series a lot. There are some plot lines / character developments I didn't personally like. There are also things in the show that can trigger viewers - like suicide / rape / mental health issues, so be aware of that. The way they did CGI / special effects isn't the best, but it's okay. The immersion is good. Overall, it's like an adult Harry Potter / Narnia series that doesn't take itself too seriously. Can't wait for the next season. 5/5.

If you love fantasy and magic this is a complete winner. I am very happy with this as well as the former seasons. The cast is superb and I am always surprised by something in an episode. Its a nice mini vacation into the land of magic mystery and mischievousness.

A lackluster spin on some good books.
Verified purchase
I loved the books. I often find, though, that a show can do better than the book did. Like GoT, where the author has a chance to refine characters, perfect the polish.

That is not this show, sadly. The essential character arc of the main character happening from the 1st to 3rd book is pretty much trashed one season in. The dark, adult spin on a Narnia/Potter style world, prickled with tongue-in-cheek characters.

It's colorful, if you are bored. But don't let its flaws deter you from reading the books.

Fillory Jumps the Shark.

I really liked the first season, but I was tired of the hand gestures and Fillory plotline by the middle of season 2. The show is already a fantasy, but it jumped the shark in Fillory. I hope next season takes place outside of the fantasy world.
