60's Flashback

Watching Merv makes you aware of how wacked out some people that were popular in the 60's were - Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol, Phil Spector, etc. I was in that era and thought they were great back then, but now I cringe when I watch them.

Boy does this take me back...I used to come home from school and watch Merv with my mom. This is entertainment history and some amazing moments captured on film. The culture is so different now than it was then, and perhaps the changes had to do with the diverse people and ideas presented on this show.

Oh, this is just too, too much!

Much of this is so completely enthralling because it is absolutely cringe-worthy! People who are celebrities because they seem to be just famous for being famous are nothing new, but I do think we were a little more naive back then. Add to that mix people of genuine talent sitting on a couch while being so charmingly grilled by Merv -- well, it's nostalgically magic! Merv's guests ofttimes revealed more of themselves than they ever imagined to an audience that only sometimes recognized what was going on. To observe this now with an adult eye is absolutely divine!

The Merv Griffin Show provided by prime is edited. Such a shame.
As many of you know, Merv Griffin was a professional musician. As such he was backed up with his band and filmed in studio in New York for some time. Here's the problem, I've purchased two episodes/shows which in no way contain the band. At least, not visually. Also, I cringed when listening to some of the interviews. Such conversation would be totally out of place now. But, it is a record that has survived the years. I guess I'll have to stick to Antenna TV to get the full length shows.
