For escape reading and as a historical romance this was a pretty good book. I have a number of Indian American acquaintances and will mention bits of this novel to them to see whether they think it was an accurate portrayal of the princely families in that time period. Most of the characters were believable and the plot held together well. I generally deplore Hollywood types and avoid novels containing them but those in the book were tolerable even with their imperfections. It contained just enough of the “unknown “ to be sympathetic without seeming smarmy. My only complaint was that the character of the owner of the county house was a bit over the top. All of the female characters were spot on.

I've read a couple of other books by Riley, and they are all enjoyable. This one, and The Orchid House, however, are really good. This is a multi generational saga moving back and forth between England and India and what I appreciated most was the fact that the story kept pace and style in both the present tense and the past. It has secrets, romance (but not overly sexual, another quality of Riley's books I appreciate) and a darn good story. All along you learn a bit about life in Rajastan and you meet well drawn and interesting characters. Yes, the bad guy (gal in this case) is really awful, but it's a minor faux pas in a story that is overall a terrifically entertaining read.

This is a superb read -- truly top-notch. The plot, which spans time periods and continents, is intricate with many twists and turns, holding the reader in its thrall right to the end. Having spent some time in India, it is clear that the author has, too, for her writing took me back there with all its beauty, squalor and complexities. Riley's characters also bring some of the realities of Britain's social relationship with India to life in a way that is both sensitive and accurate. There is star-crossed romance, there are English and Indian castles, there are mysteries, and there is a storyline which grabs and then grips the reader, drawing you into a world whose echo we still experience on some levels. This novel is a page-turner. It sometimes is tragic, but always magical. I highly recommend this spellbinding novel to you.

For Christmas this year, my children gave me a KINDLE and so I got started on ordering books. I had read several books that really didn't have much to grap me and so I thought well I will wait awile. i had read one of Ms. Riley's previous books so when Amazon allerted me her book was coming out I thought well what do I have to lose. ANYWAY, I can honestly say I just loved this story. it started out slow which was a good thing because once in a while I like to read slow, but then I got to the middle, well like around 29 percent via my Kindle page,and that is when I couldn't put the book down. Why did I like it? The characters I could relate too, they seemed real. I didn't blame one of the characters for putting people thru hell, that seemed logical. Usually when a story skips around, I get lost, but not this one. I can't wait to read Ms. Riley's books again, and so I've ordered one of her old ones and waiting for any new ones. Thanks for allowing me to voice my opinion.

I have read several of Lucinda's books! And I have to say, I have really loved them all. That being said, this particular one has moved up to my favorite one of her's! I just can'r say enough about this book. I loved books that cover several generations. And this one took place in India and England. they way see describes these countries are wonderful And the character's in this one will stay with me for a long time. . I just might some day, re-read this one.

The story toggled between two eras, but there was never confusion because of the switches from then and now. And at the end all the pieces fell into place and the story became complete. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and
I know that it will not disappoint a reader who appreciates an author weaving a story so that it leaves you wanting more.

I suppose that if l wanted to play critic and nitpick, I could have found some literary faux pas, but the truth is that this is a
wonderfully delightful story made more so by the intricate way in which it was laid out and developed.
It begins with Anahita, a beautiful Indian woman, and the story of her life, the adventures, the loves and the tragedies. Her story spans generations and travels across oceans, involving people who had never met.
Tantalizing and perfectly developed, the story will grab your heart and not let go until you read the last page.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The book is well written with two stories 90 years apart. The book goes back and forth between the early days of the 1900s and 2000 And 2012 as it builds its story. The central theme is the history of the manor in England and the people who lived there. Characters also lived in India. I found the historical parts in both India and England fascinating. A love story of two people from two different "classes", a bigoted mother whose primary concern is her own life, and keeping the two apart. What this mother does is demented and causes her descendants psychological problems for generations. I thought the ending was very strange, not believable. Overall I did enjoy the book.

Wow - just wow. This is a book that reveals itself slowly to the reader. It is a story of love and loss and everything in between, but those words alone are not enough to describe how utterly mesmerising this book is. 'The Midnight Rose' is not a book to try to race through. My advice - read it slowly and really drink in everything it has to offer. It took me a good while to get into it and I would say my least favourite part was the beginning, which does not flow as well as the rest of the book. This book gripped me slowly, but once it had me, that was it I just could not put it down. 'The Midnight Rose' tells two main stories which are set a century apart in India and the U.K. The story is mainly driven by Anahita and shows us in beautifully written prose her life story. The plot is cleverly woven between past and present and I found Riley’s descriptive writing wonderful. I could almost feel the delicate silk sari’s or smell the fragrant roses. The book takes some unusual twists and turns and the ending is well….. you will have to read it for yourself! If like me you read on the train, be prepared for some strange looks from fellow passengers as the tears stream down your face. Not my usual type of read but so glad I found this book and this author.

Okay so the positives:
Beautifully written - easy to read and pick up / put down) - absolute page turner (for me) and loved reading about Indian history.
Negatives - towards the end some of the plot is ridiculous and unnecessary ie suddenly we learn someone is living in the attic! Also I cannot believe Indira’s family would have forgiven Anahita so easily and without any repercussions. We don’t ever seem to learn who Rebecca’s father was?? Like others have said Anahita as a character is captivating but other characters are bland.

Overall - this book completely took over my week! I loved it and would recommend it and maybe the ridiculous parts give you something to think about :-)

I have only just discovered this writer and I love her stories. I'm currently reading my way through the Seven Sisters Books because I was so impressed with her storytelling in this book. She has a lovely knack of weaving past and present into an intriguing storyline which makes you want to keep reading more and more. Her characters are vibrant and alive. I'm delighted I've found her work. Her books are a mixture of adventure, romance, intrigue, factual references and general escapism all wrapped up in a saga of either multiple generations or family members, I would have no hesitation in recommending her work. If you like books by Kate Moreton, Charlotte Bingham, Penelope Vincenzi you'll like these.

I loved this book! This is my first Lucinda Riley book and it definitely won't be the last. I loved how the story unfolded in its own sweet time and the descriptions of India were riveting. Lovely to have some in-depth characters too, especially Anahita whose precocious wisdom could not save her from tragedy. Although I couldn't stop reading, the synchronicities and coincidences towards the end of the book were simply implausible but I was already under Lucinda's spell and didn't care. I wanted all the complicated ends tied up neatly and they did. How sad that Lucinda's early death will deprive us of more gems like this one but how delicious to have discovered her work and know there are many more to enjoy.

I’m a big fan of Lucinda Riley and really enjoyed this novel. Storyline and dialogue flowed and the characters were believable and consistent in personality. Even though the novel hopped between the early 20th and 21st centuries, it was written with a natural flow and progression.
I’m an extremely critical reader (I read a huge amount!) and one thing that consistently lets a book down is the ending. I often find them rushed and somehow out of step with the rest of the novel.
This ending was better than some but, in my opinion, left the reader hanging. Perhaps it was meant to. However, I was disappointed and expected more! Perhaps Ms Riley is planning a sequel? I certainly hope so!
