War has come to the worlds of Humans. The rich planet of Tau-Rietzke, however, is far from Earth and the Mercenary Guild’s invasion, and its alien-registered mercenary companies are a safe haven for humans on the run. Organizations like the Midnight Sun Free Company.
Having just completed another successful mission and taken possession of three Raknars, it was party time for Saisho Branco and the personnel of the Midnight Sun, and they were enjoying a little down time...until the war spilled over into their corner of the galaxy and two competing mercenary organizations showed up to steal the Raknars.
But no one takes the company owner’s toys, and Gloriana has given the Midnight Sun a new mission: return the Raknars to her at any cost…or don’t return at all.
This is the hardest mission the Midnight Sun has ever taken, and it will test not only the military prowess of the company, but also its members’ loyalties as well. When everyone is against you, and your race calls you to war, do you heed the call or continue to trust your shadowy employer? Outnumbered and outgunned, the Midnight Sun must decide whether to fight or to give up the Raknars and save their lives. Little do they know, it’s a decision that will impact the war being fought hundreds of light years away!

I don’t want to introduce any spoilers, but I will say that the third act that begins when everything really starts to go wrong is the strongest part of the book. It is a desperate tale of hardship, survival, sacrifice, heroism and loss that deserves to be considered as one of the best “long march” tales in Military SF. Comparisons that come to mind are the “March Upcountry series” by John Ringo and David Weber, “The Ten Thousand” by Harold Coyle, the first half of “The Last Centurion” by John Ringo, and “Redliners” by David Drake. It really is that good.
Another aspect not to be left out, is how deft the author is at developing minor and tertiary characters, and giving the reader new appreciation for some of the alien races in the 4HU. I also enjoyed discovering the nobility of otherwise loathsome characters (or ones that I am genetically predisposed to dislike, i.e. giant killing-machine spiders).
This is an excellent addition to the 4HU franchise, and you need to read it. Especially so you’ll understand this: I AM BETTY! (this needs to be on a t-shirt!).
Someone is actually breaking the law and placing Humanity in harm's way, to the point of forcing them to break some of the GU's tenets and laws regarding the long gone Dusman race's supertechnology so that they can have a pretext to invade and "take stewardship" of Mankind, "for their own good".
One of the main players in that plot is revealed in this story and the stage is set for what may well be building up to be another Great Civil War like the one that sundered the First Republic before the GU was formed. What do you do when faced with this? You withdraw, regroup, and prepare for the inevitable, with an intent and eye on winning. Well, the Four Horseman with a bunch of smaller/lesser Merc companies do just that. Time to prepare for War and humanity does just that.
There also seems to be a number of plot holes if you look at the book just by itself. How did the smoke stay in the cargo hold while the doors were open to vaccume? Did the big transport just make one round around the galaxy and the Scorpions were just taking a joy ride in it? Where were the reinforcements that was supposed to be part of the Scorpions’ plan? There are much, much more inconsistencies towards the end of the book. It just seems that the author wanted everyone to die to add a bit more melodramatic flair to the book.
What I thought was going to be a bit too slow to read just just a really good setup of the exposition / setting. Without saying any spoilers, I really enjoyed this one by the end.
The one thing that kept making me laugh was Betty.
Because to me when I hear that name I think of the skit from Laverne & Shirley
Betty .... PICK UP!!
Betty .. Betty .. Betty

The Four Horsemen Universe (4HU) continues to expand with new allies entering the fray and new characters galore.
Just like the previous instalments in the series, The Midnight Sun continues to deliver a great story while introducing new characters, new twists and revealing more of the mystery driving the war between Earth and the all-powerful mercenary guild.
Chris, Mark and the rest of the team writing the 4HU story have created an exciting world of adventure, drama, humour, double crosses and close escapes.
Strap in, load up and enjoy the ride. I know I did.
Bravo Tim Taylor.
i loved the character development along the way
i hope Tim will share more adventures with Branco and Betty and Major Sun as i really enjoyed them

The Scorpions have stolen 3 Raknar that the Midnight Sun have just been given, but the Condottieri want them as well. In a chase that starts on the planet the Midnight Sun call home, through hyperspace, and onto an abandoned jungle swamp planet, the Midnight Sun battle both the Scorpions, and then the Condottieri for ownership of the Raknar.
To make matters worse, the Condottieri are working for the Mercenary Guild, and the Veetanho, and General Peepo against their fellow humans. Good thing the Midnight Sun have a secret allie of their own!

Wow this book is none stop action from go to whoa (Yes horse reference 😊).
Full of lay down crazy creatures and hidden surprises both in enemy and allies.
This is another Kindle Killer, they have burnt through my Kindle battery by making me not want to put them down.
As we learn more about the mercenary forces of earth and what they will do to protect and defend it from the guilds.
I can see this is heading to a galactic confrontation that will use each of earth mercenary’s special forces and abilities in a way that Peepo will not see coming.
Can’t wait for the next instalment of this engrossing tale.
Cheers to all that have contributed to this story line in the Four Horseman Universe 😊

I rate this as among the best and most entertaining of the already excellent 4HU books.
