You heard Ivan, a gorilla, tell his story in "The One and Only Ivan". Now Ivan’s best bud Bob, a dog, tells his story in this sequel to Ivan, "The One and Only Bob".
Katherine Applegate's searing writing style is back, and she is just as penetrating. It's a four-part book, with part one providing the introduction to Bob's start and the story's connection to Ivan, Stella, and Ruby. She quickly gets at human responsibility when it comes to animal treatment, which makes both of these books so ever convicting. At one point Bob says, “humans meant the possibility of living, just as much as they meant the possibility of dying.”
Part two introduces new characters named Nutwit, a squirrel near his home, and a fellow dog named Droolius. Bob describes his present life as a pet and the changes from his life as a stray. Not gonna lie, when Julia takes Bob to the zoo, my heart did a little dance with the first interactions between Bob and Ivan and then Bob and Ruby. It speaks to my love for “The One and Only Ivan”. I realized after years of teaching this book to elementary students, I longed for more interaction between Bob, Ivan (along with Kinyani), and Ruby. “The One and Only Bob” provides this satisfaction.
But things are different, as they always are with the passing of time.
And then the weather turns…
Part three sees Bob in the hound pound and at the same time taking the reader into the inner struggles of Bob, a seemingly tough guy with an ever-softening heart. It also asks of humans, how will you respond to animals, any animals? With kindness? Brutality?
Part four rounds back to 1249 Hinman Ave. and begs the question, “Is Ruby up next?”

My students and I love reading The One and Only Ivan and then learning about what is known about Ivan from his life. The One and Only Bob could never be used as a sequel, because Ms. Applegate takes great liberty in Ivan's adventures, to the point of being unrealistic. Many of the details presented in this book directly contradict facts from the first book, like time period, and any student who pays attention will catch on to the discrepancies. Instead of the profoundly moving, intimately chosen words to represent Ivan's thoughts, she resorts to using modern day slang when Bob is talking. She uses the phrase, "I may or may not have" ad naseum. While Bob was a rescue, the amount of time that had passed for the setting of this book, and knowing that he is admittedly spoiled, he would have lost his wanna-be street attitude. It possibly could be an okay read on its own, but the ending is predictably cliche, and definitely could not be taught as a sequel. I wouldn't use this book in my classroom period.

Bob might be diminutive in stature but he’s got a massive heart for love and good will♥️
In Katherine Applegate’s new novel, “The One and Only Bob”, we’re reunited with Bob, the lionhearted, precocious pup from “Only Ivan”. Bob has a family, a forever home and gets to visit his best friends Ivan and Ruby. While on a visit to the zoo, tragedy strikes and Bob is tested to extreme measures as he fights to save the lives of his friends and himself.
Applegate writes with warmth, compassion and humor. This is a book for all ages with themes of love, friendship, healing, a nod to caring for our earth long term and all the creation that inhabits it. This can be a great impetus for discussion, family reading, book clubs, etc.
The type font is large, spaced widely with lots of blank area. Young readers won’t be overwhelmed by it or the vocabulary which is reasonable. Artwork is endearing and snuggly which is quite a feat for the monochromatic shades of grey.
Bob reminded me a bit of Disney’s “Tramp” while I was reading and then I got to the author’s notes - you’ll be surprised to see who’s signed on to play the valiant pup in the August movie release! This book is a stand alone or volume 2 - either way, just make sure to get a copy for you and those you love. Great stuff📚

As a person, I like to read all types of books.
As a mother, I like to read books my daughter is required to read (or chooses) ~~ it gives us something to talk about, and excites her to read more 🤗
As an animal lover, I like to read books that encourage rescue & paint a picture for all ages to see about the way some humans can treat innocent animals.
We both LOVED “The One & Only Ivan” ~ so I preordered three total copies of “The One & Only Bob” {2 as gifts and 1 for my daughter/me}.
I finished it in one sit-down.
Applegate does a great job, again, adding subtle hints in her books for “how to treat others” - and not just with lines as “be kind to others” or “help one another” and “don’t judge a book by its cover” ~~ she does this all in such perfect story telling ways, with all of her characters. It brings a smile to my face & heart. = it gives my daughter and I more topics to talk about and for me to add on to Applegate’s words and say “so you see the lesson or point here?....” 😉
Start with “Ivan” if you haven’t read it yet.
Then enjoy “Bob”.
I really am hoping 🤞🏼 for the next one...”The One & Only Ruby” 🐘 🤗
{P.S. the ending is my favorite part ♥️}

Very disappointed by this follow up to “The One and Only Ivan”. “Ivan” is one of our families all time favorite books, so we were obviously excited about this sequel. For starters the book may be 300+ pages but it is a short read. Takes about 200 pages for something to happen and to get to the characters we actually cared about. Worth a read but be prepared to be disappointed.

Bob’s voice shines through in Applegate’s sequel to The One and Only Ivan. His tough guy, street rat exterior is a shell for his huge, caring heart. The storyline itself was fantastic, but what I enjoyed most was Applegate’s insight into the world of dogs. The “dogtionary” at the front of the book (including terms such as the “water bowl of power” and “zoomies) let me know right away that this was a book that was good for my dog-loving heart.
The powers of friendship, love, bravery, and hope resound in this sequel.

An apt sequel to one of the best books in children's literature.... The one and only Ivan. Its a book which even adults can enjoy. Though it's a tough act to better one and only Ivan.,this one does manage to keep one engrossed. Compassion, love, camaraderie and friendship... All values absolutely necessary today are shown so beautifully just like in Ivan's book. Another gem from Katherine Applegate, not to be missed
