I'm naturally gifted on the field and between the sheets. With flashy cars and enough media attention to put the royal family to shame, I'm the definition of most eligible bachelor.
Every man wants to be me, and every woman wants to tame me. Until Camila.
The moment I lay eyes on her, I know I have to have her.
She wants to keep me at arm's length.
I want her naked in my bed.
She thinks our worlds are too different.
All I want her to think about is screaming my name.
She says I'm bad news.
I have three weeks to prove her wrong.

The Player is a sort of friends to lovers sports romance. When soccer superstar Warren Silva returns to his childhood hometown of New York, he doesn't expect to meet Camilla Avila. She's smart, nice, naturally beautiful and down to earth. She's the opposite of the type of woman he normally searches out. But Warren can't get her off his mind. He's determined to get Camilla into his bed. Too bad Camilla isn't interested in Warren's advances. She knows when something is too good to be true, and Warren is just that. Warren isn't easily deterred, though. He's willing to do whatever it takes to make her his -- even if he has to take things slow and be her friend first.
The Player was a strong first foray into sports romance for Contreras. It was filled with her amazing writing, a fun take on a celebrity sports romance, and the perfect amount of emotional angst. The dual points of view did an amazing job of showcasing the characters' feelings. I loved the way it included European soccer culture and words into the mix. That made the story and its settings feel real.
Camilla was a really cool character. Her determination to support herself and not give up her dreams for a man was inspiring. I loved that she wasn't into Warren's celebrity status and was only concerned about what was in his heart. Claire Contreras really made Camilla's emotions and feelings come alive. I felt her trepidation about Warren's intentions. I felt her attraction and love for him. I felt her despair and heartache. I was so wrapped up in Camilla's story that Warren was almost a side character for me.
This is hard for me to admit, but I wasn't really sure about Warren for a large part of the book. I think I felt so many of Camilla's emotions that I had a hard time believing in him. I mean, I knew Warren had to be amazing because Claire Contreras created him. It just took me a while to get past his cocky unawareness. I was totally team Warren in the end, though! I loved the chemistry he had with Camilla. There were some incredibly hot moments between the two of them that had me fanning myself. ;)
The only thing I felt was missing from The Player was some of the history behind Camilla's father's incarceration. Without that information, I had a hard time understanding Camilla's hate for the person she blamed for her father going to jail. The grudge she was holding onto so desperately didn't make complete sense to me.
I found The Player to a super sexy romance filled with fun sports references. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to see Claire Contreras write more books in the soccer world setting. I would love her to write books about Warren's teammates falling in love! I highly recommend The Player to new adult readers who love sports romances and/or strong female characters.
From the start Warren Silva won my heart. I’m not sure if it was because of how he reacted towards Camila or because his vulnerability had shown through so early on. Whichever or whatever the reason may have been all I know is that this guy knocked the socks right off of me. Like all of my fave sports romance books, I love that Warren’s character had so much passion and heart for his craft. Known as “War Zone” in the soccer (or the real football) world, he’d thrived under the wealth and fame that came with his stature. It wasn’t until returning to New York City and setting his eyes on Camila that made Warren realize just what he was missing in life. Camila’s character is spot on. She’s exactly the sort of heroine I love reading about. She is intelligent, full of sass yet so completely sweet with a heart of gold. Having gone through a tough childhood she’d built a wall around herself. Not only did she have a hard time trusting others but she’d also held on to this grudge and ill will towards the Belmonte family. A family that caused the downfall of her own. But when Warren comes barreling into her life, insisting on interjecting himself in any sort of way so he could get to know her, Camila though quite hesitant in the beginning starts to soften and ultimately finds love when and where she least expected it.
Though I knew where the plot twist was headed, it didn’t stop me from being wholly entertained. I couldn’t wait until everything came into play because I wanted to see how both Warren and Camila would deal with the challenges. These two didn’t disappoint; most importantly Warren Silva didn’t disappoint. OMG every single time he wooed Camila from start to finish just had me melting in a puddle of goo. I was gaga over how sweet and genuine and sexy he was with her. Every time he called her “baby” had my heart beating wildly and I swear I’d read that sentence again and again just so I could get the same reaction out of myself. Oh, the feel good feeling!!! Their chemistry was straight on point.
The Player by Claire Contreras is a book which should be judged by its cover because the love story that fills its pages is as equally enticing. I hope that Ms. Contreras decides to give us a little bit more of Warren and Camila. That right there is a solid indication of how much I loved this book because she has me wanting more. If you’re in a book funk like I was and you’re a romance addict like me, then The Player is one you need in your life ASAP.

Camilla and her friend Charlie were going to a meeting with the developers to try and negotiate for the residents. What she didn't expect was to be spotted by one of the investors, who decided to make it his mission to get to know her.
Good story, excellent strong female main character with a swoon worthy football player suitor!

This was different from any other sport story with being from UK Football/soccer is more my sport, so I could relate more, but it wasn't just that. Warren was your typical "Player" - until Camila.
Warren "The Player" Silva is good at what he does on and off the field but he's been finding himself a changed man recently, so when he encounters a meeting with the money shy Camila when he's behind the plans to make Camila homeless and the upheaval of her community with new development plans.
Warren is ultimately attracted to Camila and her differences to his usual conquests, she short, curvy, sassy and everything he's just not used to. Especially when she turns him down! However, Warren is persistent with his attempts and Camila finally gives in, but it's on her terms.
Can a relationship work between these two work when their worlds seem so totally different and them living on different continents.
I loved both these characters, again,Warren is so different,in a good way,to your usual players and he is so hot but also kinda cute with it. While Camila is just as strong willed until it comes to Warren and love.
What a great sports love story and I can't wait to read more of Claire Contreras work, this is a firm favourite.

Warren Silva is a famous (mainly in Europe) footballer who has it all and he knows it. He is arrogant, driven and hell bent on getting what he wants. And he wants Camila.
I'm glad I saw the 'good' side of Warren first- not including the prologue which was a brilliant start- because when he returned to the UK I did not like him much at all on occasion. He did redeem himself and at points afterwards I felt great sympathy for him but it was an uphill path to liking him again. He seemed like a totally different person in the USA to the UK.
Camila was a really loveable heroine. Sweet but not saccharine. She is so likeable and people warm to her easily. Warren is absolutely captivated by her and it's easy to see why.
I did find I got a bit lost with some of the finer intricacies of the plot sometimes. It felt like the story jumped about a bit in regard to the secondary characters especially. It felt like I'd missed something pivotal somewhere. That said, the way the connection between Warren and Camila is written is beautifully spellbinding.
This was a really enjoyable read with a good balance of angst, drama, humour, sass and sexy.
Lots of sex and swearing so recommend over 18's only.
