2.0 out of 5 starsDisappointing Quality

Very disappointed in the Blu-ray quality. I own other space documentary Blu-ray discs and the quality is 10x better than this. At best, it is DVD quality but mostly either SD broadcast or even VHS. While it is interesting subject matter, it is not the crisp, finely detailed HD Blu-ray quality we have come to enjoy and expect. I was excited to receive this but after watching the first disc, this is where it is, sadly disappointing, They could have done SO much better. Much of the graphics have horizontal lines or graininess and film spots. I will probably not buy another The Universe disc again.

5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing.....

There are six seasons of "The Universe", and all are spectacular in their own right. Season one deals mostly with our Solar System, though it gives more than a passing nod to Galaxies and Stars, which it also covers in subsequent episodes later on. Our Sun is looked at more in depth. The Moon, its formation and its role where Earth is concerned is discussed as are the conditions of both the inner and outer planets. An episode, entitled "Most Dangerous Places" showcases exploding stars and Black holes," the Search for ET", described the search for other possible intelligences in the Universe, and focuses on the question of what caused the Big Bang. Earth is not left out either. From scenarios of possible destruction from Space to just how lucky we truly are that our planet is the way it is. Beautiful scenes illustrate just what scientists are talking about as the explain details in easy to follow terms and experiments, as it is easy to see that they want people to understand what is out there and their fascination with it.

This is an astounding production! If you love astonomy, and have questions about the Universe, this is the way to go. These are the scientists, the--- REAL-- people behind the scenes, speaking to us from their hearts and knowledge. You can FEEL their passion and amazement! This production, has me on the edge of my seat! And the Computer graphics are a true and amazing gift, with a few ---actual images thrown in!!!

I have the all seasons and have watched them several times. It is a very inexpensive way to get an education. I have learned sooo much!!

I read the negative reviews and I have to laugh! I wonder if anything would have been acceptable?! Sit back and enjoy! Ponder the possibilities and the new questions that arise within you. They can't please all of us with every detail in this production.

If you have an open heart to feel the enthusiasum of what WE are a part of, and an open mind to how it is presented--- YOU ARE IN FOR A RIDE OF YOUR LIFE!

Not very good; too dramatic, too much sensationalizing and not informative enough. I do not recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 starsA breath-taking series!!!

What an awe inspiring series. My husband and I love astronomy and we thoroughly enjoyed this series.
It brings the mysteries of the universe down to earth.

It's educational, informative and the animation and digital effects is breathtaking. It's a series one can get lost in and it really is time well spent.

We loved every disk, it has thought-provoking and bizarre episodes such as Life and Death of a Star, Search for ET, Alien Galaxies to name a few. All in all this is mind-boggling stuff.
And our favourite is the Big Bang. It shows us nearly everything we want to know about the Big Bang.
We have since watch it so many times that I've lost count. This series is thought-provoking, it makes us realise just how insignificant we are in this vast and ever expanding universe.

Go ahead and get it, it's money well spent!

5.0 out of 5 starsThis season includes one of the best episodes ever

This season includes one of the best episodes ever. It showed how our understanding of the universe started hundreds of years ago with Keppler, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, and many more. Awesome documentary that children should watch too. Actually, this extended episode was the reason I bought this disc, so I could show it my children.

This is The 'Complete Season One' from the UNIVERSE series by The History Channel. The four DVDs with a variety of topics cover an immense area, in most cases beyond our biological ability to comprehend. The unavoidable comparison of magnitudes among the earth, planets and space brings to our mind the minuscule reality of our own physical nature. Besides being informative this program provides a most desirable experience in mental alertness. The quality of the text and the graphics are superior and keep your attention.
These DVDs (used) were purchased from Jenny's in Los Angeles, a seller I recommend for the excellent service provided.

4.0 out of 5 starsWonderful, but would be better with subtitles !
Verified purchase
Contrary to the description on the Amazon site, these 4 DVDs are not subtitled, even the number 1 disk.

That's my only regret as a French speaking customer.

But this personal inconvenience is balanced by the fact that the pictures are really wonderful.

I think it's one of the best documentary I have seen for a subject which is of deep interest for me.

Commentaries put the subject to the level that most people could understand these sometimes complex questions.

As for the language, even if there are no subtitles, it's not difficult to understand the narrator and the people interviewed with an average knowledge of English.

And the Beauty you see on your screen cancels all objections you may have.

I warmly recommend Amazon customers, even foreign ones like me, to buy this History Channel serie, which is difficult to find outside the US.
