Sarah Grayson is the happy proprietor of Second Chance, a charming shop in the oceanfront town of North Harbor, Maine. At the shop she sells used items that she has lovingly refurbished and repurposed. But her favorite pet project so far has been adopting a stray cat she names Elvis. The big black cat with a scar across his nose turned up at a local bar when the band was playing the King of Rock and Roll's music and hopped in Sarah's truck. Since then he's been her constant companion and the furry favorite of everyone who comes into the store.
But when Sarah's elderly friend, Maddie, is found with the body of a dead man in her garden, the kindly old lady becomes the prime suspect in the murder. Even Sarah's old high school flame, investigator Nick Elliot, seems convinced that Maddie was up to no good. So it's up to Sarah and Elvis to clear her friend's name and make sure that the real murderer doesn't get a second chance.

You are not going to get a mystery with tons of twists and turns or deep suspense. You do get a cozy mystery with lots of heart. I plan on reading the whole line of this series not only to try to solve the mystery before Sarah does, but to also see how the lives of the characters evolve and progress.
This book is the first in A Second Chance Cat Mystery series by Sofie Ryan. Sarah Grayson is the owner of the Second Chance shop in North Harbor, Maine, a quaint and pretty small town. She sells used things of all kinds that she has fixed up and repurposed. Sarah has Avery, a young girl and Mac, who is the handyman and who can fix anything, working at the store, and some of her other friends help out, too.
Sarah absolutely loves her cat, Elvis, who picked up his name when he happened to show up at a bar when the band was playing Elvis Presley's music. He took an instant liking to Sarah and she takes him everywhere she goes, whether allowed or not. Some people were put off by the large scar across the cat's nose, but not Sarah and her friends.
Several months after opening Second Chance, Sarah did a workshop on colorwashing furniture for senior citizens and several had signed up, including Maddie. Maddie was currently seeing a man named Arthur Fenety. Sarah and her workshop friends were very disappointed when Maddie didn't show up and that wasn't like Maddie at all. After all was finished, Sarah and her friend Charlotte went to Maddie's house to see what had happened. Maddie was sitting at a little table in the back yard and Arthur was sitting next to her, very dead. Maddie didn't know what happened to him because she had gone inside to make fresh coffee and when she came out Arthur wasn't breathing.
The police try their best to keep Sarah, Elvis and her friends out of the investigation, but it just doesn't work. There are several who could be the killer, but only one will come forward in the end.
This is an excellent cozy mystery that I really enjoyed. I liked the characters and their sense of humor and especially Sarah and the cat. The next book is something to look forward to reading, especially since this author also writes The Magical Cats series under the name Sofie Kelly and she really knows cats and their shenanigans. The characters are very easy to like, at least the ones we're supposed to like!
I loved Sam and his pub! He was just the nicest guy, and I could see why people flocked there--and he was in a band at the place as well. Sarah, Mac, Charlotte and Rose ran Second Chance which sounded like such a cool shop. They refurbished pre-loved furniture and other items. I think it would be a lot of fun to poke around a store like that. Sarah herself reunited with a couple of people from her past. I hope she and Nick stay on good terms, and things ended well for Sarah and another friend.
I loved how the showdown went off--and Elvis kitty got help. He was displaying a unique talent as well that was definitely going to be useful for solving mysteries! I've been collecting the series for years now, so I hope I get to the next book soon!
So, since I am just starting the 5th book, I merely wanted to lay a ground work for how much I am enjoying the series. And I was able to buy all of the books used. I was a librarian for 12 years, so I should be ashamed of myself for buying books. But that's another long story.
My advice?? Start this series soon. Elvis, the King of lie detector cats, is......mrrrrp, he says, a total hoot!!! So are the ladies!! I like holding a book in my hands but of course, the books are available on your reader or phone, or whatever. Hope whoever reads this, gets to the series soon!!!

I'm not giving anything away about the story, except to say it turned into a mystery, but not the blood curdling with stress and violence sort of Murder Mysteries that I find to stressful and unpleasant to read.
This is more a Mrs Marple, type Mystery, where a young woman with a cat with personally and a gentle group of elderly friends, who seem to jell together. Who live in a small town and working out what the police often seem to miss.
