Sweet, entertaining holiday romance

There's something about Merry by Codi Hall is a holiday rom-com.
The audiobook is an Audible Original and free if you are an Audible Premium subscriber.

I was looking for holiday themed audiobooks when I bumped onto There's Something About Merry. A couple of reviews said it was pornographic and downright filthy, which was all the convincing I needed. I have to disagree with these reviews, I would rate it 🌶🌶🌶🌶 (= 1-5 sex scenes. May include harsh language). The steamy scenes appear very late in the story and are very carefully described, not filthy at all, but that's my opinion. I enjoyed them!

The story was 10 hours, 43 minutes, but it didn't feel that long because it is entertaining and keeps progressing.
I love it when a story has a message, this one has several. One of them is that it doesn't mean because someone acts a certain way, they are really that way. (for example: If someone is shy in a specific situation, it doesn't mean they are shy in general)

Clarke and Merry are both lovable characters that come across very realistically. I loved seeing them get to know each other better and grow in the couple they were at the end. They were so sweet together. At the beginning of the story, I would never have guessed that Clarke would grow into the caring, attentive boyfriend he was at the end.

There are many family moments, I enjoyed this aspect of the story. I liked how it shone a light on that every family is different and has a different dynamic. I loved how it gave the message that people don't have to be blood-related to be family.
There were several side characters, and I loved them all. Especially Jace and Sam. I hope Sam will get his own story with Holly.

CJ Bloom and Lee Samuels narrated the audiobook, and it was fantastic. I have listened to CJ Bloom before and love his voice. It was my first time listening to Lee Samuels, but I will definitely listen again. She has a pleasant, soft voice.
Both narrators were completely into the story and very consistent with their voices for the several characters.
The narration added to the story and brought the story and its characters to life.

If you love a feel-good holiday romance with lots of laughs, a little drama, emotions, and steam but lots of family moments and love, then this is a must-listen!

I really enjoyed the previous book in this series (Nick and Noel's Christmas Playlist), so I was excited to keep the Christmas theme going and jump into this book. And for the most part, I did enjoy this book. The narrators did a fantastic job on the audio, there was plenty of laughs, heart, and sweetness. Plus, time was spent fleshing out Clark's character. He had flaws and acted irrationally, but he was also a great dad and so sweet. Merry was a bit harder to relate to. She was basically perfect. She had never been around kids, but she was amazing with them. Everything she was thrown into to organize, she was amazing at. She had zero flaws. And while I enjoyed reading this romance through her voice, it was weird to have someone be so... perfect. I think she could have used some hangups or something. Her exes were her only issues, and she was over them. She had no issues putting herself out there and trying again. Also, once they get together, the rest is more or less an extended epilogue. Nothing much happens, and even the almost drama with Clark's ex, isn't really a drama at all. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it just plodded along.

Anyway, I absolutely enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a solid Christmas romance to fall into. Looking forward to the next one (crossing my fingers)!

Mostly boring Hallmark movie plot with sex thrown in

This book is filled with long, boring, cliche, Hallmark-derivative scenes of small-town Christmas events. The romance plot starts out as an homage to the movie, You've Got Mail. But that approach to the romantic leads is rapidly resolved, and the romantic conflict after that is rather contrived and mostly uninteresting.

This book qualifies as "slow burn" because the sex scenes don't begin until 60%.

There is lots of heavy drinking in this book, lots of foul language, and highly descriptive sex.

A bit of soapy melodrama is thrown into the mix at the very end of the book, which is jarringly in contradiction to the tone of the rest of the story.

I skipped over a lot of this book after about halfway through, because it was mostly padded out with redundant scenes that all started to blend together in a boring, amorphous mass in my mind.

The audiobook narration is moderately good. However I don't recommend experiencing this story in audiobook format, because it drags out the experience of a book that is best read by skimming.

Not a hallmark romance

Reviews are subjective but this didn’t work for me. Too much sex talk. I’m more into hallmark romance type stories. I don’t know how I missed the reviews on audible on this one. I wasted a credit and now I’m mad. I would have enjoyed the story otherwise. Will be steering clear of this author going forward. Sad because I would have liked to hear more about the other characters.

Oh one really annoying thing…her name is Merry not Mary. It really ticked me off that her name was pronounced as Mary. It’s Merry. Merry. Merry. Lol

Light holiday rom com

Again I say, not my usual genre but with Christmas, a cute puppy, and romance... what more could you want! The son was annoying to me but all of the other characters were likable. If you liked Nick and Noel's Christmas Playlist, definitely check this one out!

A Sweet Christmas Romance

This was a sweet Christmas romance. I love how Merry and Clark's romance faced some difficult moments but won out in the end. I enjoy the addition of Clark being a single father and what that meant for him and how that molded him into the person that he is. Overall, it was a sweet story.

There definitely is something about Merry. This is a sweet, small town, holiday rom-com. I would also consider this a second chance romance. Everything about this is sweet and perfect if you're wanting a romance with a little spice.
