As the Gypian Empire grinds its heel on the natives of Juut, Manwe the Panther strives to throw back his peoples’ oppressors from the shadowed corners of Tolivius, an archaic city ruled by the corrupt and wealthy. With only his blade, his wits, and an unshakable will, he risks life and love to fuel a rebellion.
Yet every shadow breeds darker things than even the Gypians can muster. Pushed to the limits of his skills, Manwe faces off with horrid shamans, ancient evils, and a cunning wizard who beguiles his mind and his heart. When every step is questioned, every decision doubted, he must steel himself with a harsh, unquestionable truth:
All revolutions begin in the dark.

About the author

Risen from the hills of North Carolina, Jay Requard is an award-winning fantasy author known for “heroes with genuine emotions and concerns for the word they live in” facing off against the darkest powers with little more than love, courage, steel, and magic to set things right. From the pulse- pounding heists of Thief of Destiny to the dark desert romance of Death & Dust and other tales of wonder, readers have noted his modern take on the genre feels like “diving into new hero mythology.”

The Gem of Acitus - Introduces the reader to the Panther's world, where his clan has been conquered by another clan and live on the edges of a far-flung empire. Being a thief of shadows, the Panther is out to steal the Gem of Acitus from some of the rich to sell to other rich folk. But the chamber he sneaks into has an unexpected occupant.
A Light in the Dark - Captured by a Sorcerer, Manwe is dragged to an ancient Centaur temple to extract a magical weapon - containing powerful and dark magic. His task is to retrieve it - "will I live once I do so?" he asks. His captor smiled.
By the Tears -At an orgy-party of the richest rich of his conquered city, the Panther slinks through to capture a prize and finds another thief targeting the same party. They have a thief-off challenge. Songs and slight-of-hand wow the rich targets until they run into a problem. Manwe's Sorcerer is part of the entertainment too, and he isn't happy.

Manwe is a thief. If that's all you are interested in, however, you are missing out. Manwe is a man with a mission. His people have recently
been taken over by another clan. He is agile, clever, and cares deeply for others.
I have not read a better fantasy novel that deals with same sex love with the compassion and sensitivity that it deserves. Manwe loves a man. He loses his lover to conquerors. He spends the rest of the novel trying to figure out how to steal a weapon or piece powerful enough to help his people be free again.
Of course, once he actually finds the ultimate weapon, he must consider the consequences of using it. Manwe's world is fascinating and well developed. There is a mysterious Centaur race that has vanished, possibly because of their own self-destructive weapons. Jay tantalizes readers into wishing he would tell more about Manwe's world and history. It is a fascinating place.
And what does one do when one's chief rival confesses to being in love with you? Especially when his kiss electrifies your toes?
Buy this book! You will not be disappointed.
