There is a lot of violence and some gore. The female character is treated miserably and creepily by all the males except the Beast. But, this IS a fairy tale after all. In the original "Beauty and the Beast," Belle is kidnapped; forced into labor; verbally and emotionally abused; physically threatened; and demeaned and objectified by Gaston. Would we admire her courage, spirit, and independence as much, otherwise? Review by R. E. Admore
I love that Nelle is from the streets if you will and not a refined lady. Her candor and attitude toward her current situations is sometimes funny but refreshing. Soran is a tortured soul. The slow build in the newly formed partnership between Nelle and Soran is good and promises some heat to come.
The different takes on certain creatures, was fun and I liked the unique twists. I also love the comic relief and banter a certain winged one brings to the scenes.
This was a very fun story. The pacing was a tad slow here and there, but the characters were interesting, there was a lot of mystery, and there were some surprising twists! Overall, this story was great and I'm looking forward to the next one.
The reason I'm docking a star is because the romance felt a little forced to me. The chemistry just wasn't quite there for me. But the rest of the story was interesting, I liked the worldbuilding, and I was a huge fan of the author's other Venatrix series, so I'll definitely be picking up the next book!

+ The writing. It flows brilliantly.
+ The world building. It's familiar but fresh.
The not so sure:
- Nelle, specifically her "dialect" and repeated use of the same not-swear-word curse
- The pace is slow, but something about the romance seems a bit quick off the bat (but it's still not insta-love)
In the end, I am massively curious about where this will go. We've only just scratched the surface of the Roseward magic and mystery, and how Nelle and Soren are going to work things out now some big backstory has come to light promises to be a slow-burn attention-grabber (nitpickers gonna nitpick even when they loved the story so far). With book three not out for some time, I'm trying so hard not to go straight on to book two. Great writing and original fantasy make this a seriously promising series starter.
