I read and listened to this book and absolutely loved it. I promised myself that I'd savour these books and not binge them but it's almost impossible not to. I wouldn't suggest starting with this book if you've never read any of the others because I don't feel they can stand alone. Why would you want miss out on all of these books anyway? In this story Father Tim is preparing to go off and do missionary work in Tennessee even though he's experiencing some twinges of doubt. He neglects his health once again and gives all of us a huge scare. We're united with the "man from the attic" from an earlier book as he's finished his term in prison. Father Tim continues his search for Dooley's missing siblings and overall this is another delightful instalment. I'm afraid I've already downloaded the next 2 on Audible, I can't help myself.

In this novel, Jan Karon deals with serious issues. Father Tim faces depression and struggles with forgiveness, including forgiving himself. He also has to accept the fact that we bear responsibility for how our actions can affect others.
The book is dark and difficult to read at times, but the joys and triumphs make the novel well worth reading. Jan Karon takes us places we would rather not go and opens our eyes to truth that we would rather not face, but in the end faith, love, and joy triumph. I highly recommend this book!

These are the first books I have read by Jan Karon and I'm hooked. This series about an Episcopalean priest and his dog is so completely
entertaining that I plan on getting many more of her books after I completed the 9 in this series. She is a writer that makes you feel as though
you are a part of this small but wonderful community. There aren't too many books that will make you laugh out loud with the smallest sweetest
things. I know I will miss Fr. Timothy Kavanaugh and his life with his new wife and old dog. Make sure you real al of them in order. You too will
be in love with this series. Thank you, Jan Karon.

This novel is a gem, because it expires human nature even further than the previous no pass through the development of characters that have been on the edge of the stories. The thoughts and preoccupations of Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, Lace and the hearts of two men who have served prison time highlight the story line. If one has read all the previous novels, a settled and comfortable feeling enters the reader while moving through the story. Mitford is a known quantity— a comfortable friend with surprising twists and turns!

I hate to say that I'm disappointed in this audiobook, as it is well done and I love the story. I am, however, very disappointed that there was no way of me knowing that I was ordering the Abridged version instead of the full Unabridged version that I really wanted. I don't like Abridged versions because so much of the story is missing that it becomes disjointed. When trying to buy a used copy of the book, for some reason the sellers leave off this very important fact of being Abridged or Unabridged and so it's a complete risk to purchase it. Since it's used you can't necessarily tell by the price which it is, either. I've had the same problem in the past as well and it is very frustrating to spend money on something that disappoints, not because it is a bad book but because it is an incomplete book purchased blindly through Amazon. Can it become a regulation that audiobooks must divulge whether they are abridged or unabridged. It would help immensely.

As a pastor I enjoy reading the Mitford series. I can relate to lots of the things that Father Tim deals with. This book spoke directly to my heart. Retirement is not something that Pastors look forward to, at least not the ones I know. A good pastor / missionary / evangelist never retires from doing the Lord's work.
But what caught me here was the fact that even Pastor's can struggle with some discouragment and depression. I have struggled for the last two years with some depression after being moved from one position to another. It has been difficult. Sometimes I wondered where God was.
I like Father Timothy kept opening my Bible looking for the right verse that would speak to my heart. So, as I read this book I totally related.
I would hope that as you read it you will come to understand that Pastors are just as human as everyone else. We deal with the same issues that laypeople deal with.
God is there and is walking with us through every part of our lives. You just might not see him clearly right now. But hold on tight, He is there and He loves you and will help you find the other side of depression and bring you Joy in the morning.
Thank you Jan for writing a truly heart felt book.
