Nora Ephron does a wonderful job of creating a story about a divorced woman who finally finds the fame and recognition she has always wanted. The dynamics between mother and daughters feels real, and there are so many sharp, true to life moments in the film. My only complaint is that Samantha Mathis is a bit one note as the daughter. Her character is such a downer from the beginning that it's hard to feel much sympathy for her. She's whiny and hateful in nearly every scene. While this is realistic, it doesn't always make for an entertaining movie.

"This is My Life" is a delightful coming of age/coming into your own as a person story about a teenage girl whose single-parent mother upends the family's life when she embarks on her lifelong dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Samantha Mathis and Julie Kavner deliver outstanding performances as the daughter and her mother. The supporting cast shines with stellar turns from Carrie Fisher (the neurotic agent), Dan Akroyd ("The Moss"), Gaby Hoffman (the little sister, "Opal"), and Kathy Najimy and Marita Geraghty (actor friends who babysit the kids while the mother is away on gigs). There is even a brief, hilarious appearance of Joy Behar as a cosmetic saleswoman. Based on Meg Wolitzer's book, Nora Ephron's screenplay is believable, touching, and funny. The soundtrack from Carly Simon is superb. I loved the parallell tracks of the daughter's growing up and the mother finding and forging her own identity as an adult. Nicely done!

Charming and just plain funny

Heartwarming tale of working behind the counter at Macy's single mom Kavner with dreams of being a stand up comic. Circumstances allow her to achieve her dream but wreak havoc with her two daughters. Samantha Mathis and Gaby Hoffman play the daughters who cheer mom on until her career starts taking steam, finally hitting the big time, they then feel neglected and go "home" to a dad who abandoned them years ago. Hilarious, tender and funny, this is the movie to make you laugh and really feel good. Dan Ackroyd as Kavner's paper eating manager "the Moss" steals the show. A winner.

For me, it was difficult to listen to.

The story may be compelling, and perhaps has a better quality than the marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as a recent review in the New Yorker suggests, but unfortunately, something about the main character’s voice caused me to stop watching.

What an overlooked gem of a movie!

I wasn't expecting much (saw it because of a completist run through Nora Ephron's catalogue) and absolutely adored it. So many sweet little details, great performances by both daughters, sharp writing, subtle and human plotline. I don't why this movie barely seems to exist, it's very much worth seeing.

I have adored this movie since renting it from the video store when I was a little girl. Now I watch it with my daughters and love it even more. It is a great 90s feel-good film.
