If, as Raymond Chandler noted, "All cynics are sentimentalists at heart," then the often-heart tugging "This Is Us," one of the few broadcast series from 2016-2017 with any buzz, should certainly appeal even to them. With its fractured time lines, its blend of social satire and family drama, and its well-drawn characters it deserves all the hype.
The entire 18 episodes are now available for streaming on Amazon, and it's well worth a binge. It begins with three people celebrating their birthdays in the present, and then flashes back into the past only to return to the present, although it takes some time to make this connection; and when it does (toward the end of the first episode), it comes at you fast.
And that format sets the stage for most of the episodes, as we learn more and more about the characters we're following. The billed stars, Milo Ventimiglia (who nails his part) and Mandy Moore (ditto), anchor the past as Jack and Rebecca Pearson, parents of triplets, while Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Ron Cephus Jones, and Susan Kelechi Watson hold up the present. Metz, who is majorly overweight (or is made up to appear so), steals every scene she's in (especially when she plays with--or against--her boyfriend, a superb Chris Sullivan). And Jones is a joy to watch But there's no show without Moore--a storm of beautiful intensity.
The transitions back and forth in time are nearly seamless, and the supporting cast is superb. Props especially to Gerald McRaney, playing an ob/gyn MD, who is given several cameos in different episodes, and always delivers a gemlike performance. Milana Vayntrub, who plays a playwright with owlish glasses, has a few bits here and there. You just know sooner or later those glasses will come off, and then maybe you'll think "isn't that _____?"
Yes.
I am avoiding describing any of the scenes, because every one advances the overall plot. So have the Kleenex ready. It's ok to cry even if--or should I say especially if--you're not a cynic.
Fair warning: Since this is a broadcast drama the obligatory Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes do appear. But they are gems. Don't skip over them thinking "I know what's going to happen here." No, you don't. And, of course, from time to time comes the usual network TV setup--somebody has a problem, another character delivers a brief lecture, the first character sees the light, and on we go as acoustic guitar music wells up on the soundtrack. Maybe you'll think "if only this was an Amazon original . . ." when scenes like that happen. But it isn't. And when something this good comes along, take what they give you and enjoy it.
NOTES AND ASIDES: This review is for the entire 18-episode series, each of which I have seen. I have tried to pitch my review to all, but I hope it is especially helpful for the people, who apparently exist, who needed some guidance from the New York Times, which ran an article explaining how "cord cutters" could watch the Oscars, which aren't streamed.

Miguel was best episode ever. Reminded me of caring for my Mom and Dad. With the exception of maybe the last couple of seasons, this has been the best tv show in my adult lifetime. Thank you for bringing this to us in a world so full of thoughtless, uncaring people. I've watched and re-watched the Miguel episode every day since it aired. This was similar to the episodes of the family caring for William as he aged ... that is exactly what family is for.

Close to being a family kind of tv show.
I just said close not all the way.
I do like how the show portrays the white man adopted a African American baby.
In reality that's very rare.

This show is so beautifully written you hear words coming out of a character's mouth that can help you find meaning in your own life. The music is fantastic; another reason to watch. The family is not perfect but it is a great family. Real life families are not perfect. There have been some series that I did not discover right away but I am glad to say that I have been with This Is Us from the first episode. I love all of the characters. I love the show. It's wonderful. It's touching. I think it's great that Jack and Rebecca made attempts to help Randall connect with other African Americans and tried to understand how it is different.
I plan to stick with the Pearsons as long as they are on TV. I want to hear Katie and Mom sing. Randall and Beth. Jack and Rebecca. Two lovely couples. I want to see the adult Kevin continue to grow. William's poetic words of wisdom touch my heart. Awesome show - This Is Us.

This is my favorite new show in years! I could sit for hours watching the episodes. After I bought the streaming version on Amazon, I checked my cable service and realized it was available under my subscription without additional cost. So check there first. If not included, do not hesitate to get it from Amazon--especially if you need a good cry. I especially like how the creators jump around yet tie everything together seamlessly.

I can't even begin to describe how in love my fiancé and I are with this show. This is the first television show that either of us has ever REALLY gotten into. We look forward to watching it every Tuesday night. It's so refreshing to finally see a TV show with no sex, drugs and alcohol become so popular. The stories of these characters are phenomenal and the director/actors have done and continue to do such an amazing job. We're hooked and can't wait for more seasons!

I almost never watch major network regular broadcast TV anymore. After hearing some reviews of this show, I ordered season one. It is rare to find a TV show that is this good. I have never seen the switch from present day to earlier periods done as well as in this show. Very good acting, and the production is outstanding! By the way, when did Mandy Moore become such a good actor and get so pretty?

Eine wunderbare Drama-Serie
Reviewed in Germany on February 7, 2019

Reviewed in Germany on December 22, 2018

It's the best!

Like wow! What an amazing drama this turned out to be. My first impressions, after viewing the DVD cover, was that this was a series from the USA that would deal with issues that only people in their 20's or 30's could relate to - on that score, I was so, so wrong! I would contest that you could be a male or female, and aged anywhere between 15 and 75, and still get emotionally blown away by this superbly constructed comedy/drama.
For the record, I'm a 64 year old guy who would rank Breaking Bad, House, Banshee and Game of Thrones among his favourite box-sets - but even I was totally gripped by this brilliant drama. I was particularly impressed with the way the stories within each episode would often seamlessly move backwards and forwards between the present and several decades earlier. Each main character has his or her own faults, failings, regrets, strengths and weaknesses etc, but each is also a genuinely good person - so much so that when they are hurt, you feel their pain, and when they are happy, you smile and laugh with them.
This Is Us maintains a nice balance of drama and comedy throughout each of its episodes, and there's never a dull moment. To me, it seemed that whenever I thought a particular plot was going to lead to a certain outcome, a curve ball would be thrown my way, and the unexpected would happen. This is one of the many delights of this series - it's ability to surprise, sometimes in a very amusing way, sometimes in a sad or even stunning way. I can virtually guarantee that this drama will melt the hardest of hearts, and have most of you laughing and crying in equal measures. There's a lot of dross on TV these days, but once in a blue moon a drama series comes along that is something extra special, one that grips you with meaningful stories, one that has a brilliant, intelligent script, one that is brought magnificently to life by a group of superb actors - this is such a series. So, don't deprive yourself - beg, steal or even buy the DVD series of This Is Us. Even after viewing just that first pilot episode, you'll end up being so pleased with yourself afterwards - I promise!

What a beautiful show (and i don't usually like family dramas)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 5, 2018
I saw this show recommended to me via Amazon Prime and thought id give it a go seeing its a big hit in the US. At first i was unsure i would enjoy this type of show (not really into family dramas) but as i've just finished the first season let me just say WOW. What a beautiful show i loved the first season each episode for me was perfect and i love all the characters. I very rarely cry at tv shows but this show broke me. Favourite episode of the season was Memphis which left me in floods of tears but overall the season was amazing. I have already ordered the first season on DVD and i am also trying to get the rest of my family to watch this show its that good. Cannot wait to start season 2 and apparently it is suppose to be even more emotional so i need to prepare myself for more laughter, more heartbreak and more joy. Cannot recommend this show enough. Season 1 rating: 10/10

What a great show

If you've seen 'This Is Us' then you know why you're here. I cannot watch a single episode of the show without crying my eyes out. It's funny, serious, heart wrenching and the stories of these family members is just fantastic in the way that it is told, going forwards and backwards in time. The DVD contains the entire first series and is a fabulous price for hours and hours of great TV.
