If you like soccer you will like this series
First thing to know: The negative reviews are almost exclusively from people who hate soccer. They don’t say anything about the documentaries. This is a series of six documentaries about soccer. I don’t know how soccer got drawn into the whole blue state/red state thing, but that’s what the negative reviews are about.
The documentaries are really good. Each one tells a story based on a one word description like “luck” or “passion” or “love”. I found each of them compelling. If you like soccer then these documentaries are “must watch” television. I thought this was a pretty nice series. Certainly much better than the moronic superhero drivel that Amazon also just released.

A genuine masterpiece! I Look forward to a Season 2!!!
There is no other sport as powerful, as popular, and as influential, all at the same time in the world at football/soccer; the original world series, manifested from remote corners of the earth by barefoot kids, up to stadiums trading billions every year. But this show touches also on the connecting dimension of the sport, the social and creative spaces it provides for people to interact together positively and to discover more about themselves and football itself. The world calls it football and indeed, This Is Football. Thank you Amazon and PLEASE give us a Season 2 at least!!!

Not impressed, poorly done
If you are a huge soccer/football fan this will leave you VERY disappointed. Some of the shows are "adjacent" to the game and the other ones leave seriously you wanting details. There are some great docs on soccer on Amazon and this is not one of them. I was seriously disappointed given that there is a wealth of untold football stories out there.

It's called The Beautiful Game for a reason.
In the developed world that competes for our viewing eyes, we have a million choices of what to watch. Not many of those choices move us forward, move our emotions, open our eyes, and show an aspect of global community (and how that can truly be possible). Six eye-opening episodes: loved them all for different reasons. I hope there is a Season 2.

Love the subject matter, but very poorly done
It's like someone watched a vice documentary, stole the soundtracks and color schemes, and tried to copy and paste a bunch of footage together without any thought to plot, message, or device. Most episodes leave nothing to look forward to. It's obvious what the point of the documentary is in the first 5 minutes and that message is repeated constantly with overly dramatic music, closeups, and narrations. Brief moments of quality storytelling show up but are the exception, not the rule. It's a shame too because the subject matter for each documentary are worth being immortalized in film.
