Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4—This simple tale has a sneaky, edgy humor that erupts into hilarity as well as a warm, stabilizing feeling for humanity in all of its quirky manifestations. "Old Man Fookwire was so old that when he sneezed, dust came out. He was also a grump. He hated pie. He hated puppies. The only thing he liked was birds." This verbal introduction to the main character is enhanced with paintings—reminiscent of some of the best European children's book illustrations—of an exaggeratedly skinny, flannel-shirted caricature with a long neck, long nose, oversized glasses, and protruding Adam's apple. He never smiles, even when he's painting pictures of the birds that visit his yard every summer. In an attempt to keep the birds around when autumn arrives, he builds wonderful birdfeeders. They do indeed attract the birds—but they also catch the eye of the squirrels. The cheerful, brilliant, and adorable creatures are shown using pulleys, weights, and remarkable cooperative planning to foil Fookwire and raid the feeders. The old man fights back. But the squirrels, still smiling and hopeful, stay up all night for a planning meeting and devise a daring escapade that relies heavily on their deep understanding of physics and their willingness to be launched through the air. What happens to the squirrels, the birds, and to Old Man Fookwire is a symphony of regret, respect, and sweetness. Readers will want to linger over this book and treasure every page.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY

There are three of these books, and I love each and every one of them. We put off purchasing copies because the local library has them, but I figured when my kids (aged 4 and 6) shouted "THE LIBRARY IS OPEN WE NEED THOSE DARN SQUIRRELS" each time we drove past our town library (which is often!), that I should just man up and buy them. It's a hilarious book about a grouchy old man who hates everything except the birds in his yard, and what starts out as a comical story quickly ends as a poignant tale of friendship when the lonely old man is befriended by the very thing he hates most: those darn squirrels. We read this constantly at my house, and it never gets old for my husband and I, which is good because some children's books become mundane after the second or third read. The pictures are hilarious as well, and there are small nuances on each page that only make them funnier. I think that to enjoy these books you'll need a quirky sense of humor, though, so if you don't think funny old men in silly pants and sarcastic squirrels are funny, then it may not be for you. As for me, I'm buying the next two in the series! (I also read these books to my 6th grade classes, and they found them just as hilarious as I did.)

My daughter found this book to be like a ride on a horse through the English country ...

I purchased Those Darn Squirrels based upon the cover of the old man yelling at them in the tree. Reminded me of my neighbor so had to check it out. My daughter found this book to be like a ride on a horse through the English country side. She enjoyed how the squirrels and the old man were at odds. Laughed at the old man's name being "Fookwire". The old man as drawn was entertaining to my daughter and i chuckled too. Shaking his fist at the squirrels like an old man yelling at clouds or on the internet as you will both gave us a laugh. We enjoyed the story, even myself found this to be really funny for a children's book. She asked if squirrels are really that smart, i told her "Yes, they can be smarter than some people." as proven by those so called squirrel proof bird feeders that litter the suburbs. After reading the book inquired if there were others in the series. I believe the continuing sage of Old Man Fookwire and Those Darn Squirrels will be a set right next to the Gerald and Piggie series.

Great googlymoogly. We have read these books on repeat for the ENTIRE quarantine. The only thing that varies is the order - The Cat Next Door and Fly South rotate in first, second or third position. Thank god the books and the illustrations are brilliant and fun, because I read through breakfast, lunch, nap, dinner, bedtime. If we could have Adam and Dan (they're family now) move in and write and draw for us full time, our lives would be complete. In the meantime, our three year old offers these sequel suggestions (ARE YOU LISTENING, ADAM?): Those Darn Squirrels and the Chipmunk Invasion. Those Darn Squirrels visit the North Pole. Those Darn Squirrels go into business for themselves (we're thinking they buy a birdseed supply house and hilarity ensues). Those Darn Squirrels learn to swim. Those Darn Squirrels Build Their Dream House. Tomorrow works for us. Thanks for keeping us laughing, even if it's the same humor over and over.

Bought this book for my son for Christmas because he and I both love Dragons Love Tacos and this one had good reviews. In our opinion it's definitely nowhere near as good as Dragons Love Tacos vut it still has some of the same type of wit to it so while it's not our go-to book for bedtime I'm not regretting the purchase.

The story is okay, but two things completely distract from the story that I just can’t seem to get past.
1.) The main character’s name is Mr. Fookwire. I don’t know if I am pronouncing it right but two of my kids took a double take when I said that as they thought I was about to say a “bad word.” Of all the names to use in a children’s book, not the best choice in my opinion.
2.) If squirrels are going to be sitting around drinking cherry cola and eating salt-and-vinegar chips... why in the world would they even want to get their hands on bird seed?!?!
In m opinion, skip this book and get “Secret Pizza Party” instead.

We love the book, “Secret Pizza Party” by the same author, so we thought we would get this book too. I really wanted to love this book as well, but I don’t.

Who knew that squirrels and old Mr. Farquar (sp?) would be so entertaining. I mean when she is reading this book and gets to the Those Darn Squirrels page, the fist comes up and we say it together, giggling and laughing all the time! What a winner of a book. In my all time top 25, it's in the top 8 for sure.

This book and the whole series are so funny and clever. As a long time educator, I have shared this book with literally 100+ kids. They love it! The book also lends opportunities to jump off into other educational extensions, but bottom line - it is just a fun book to read and enjoy again and again.

I started reading Adam's books to my preschool class a few months ago. They fell in love the second i introduced the titles. We are in the city and play in the park. They relate to the squirrels, they already thought we had a dragon living above the classroom and love blowing bubbles...now they get where they go. Adam gets the mindset and imgination of a child. I love it. And i love they are all illustrated by someone i went to art school with :)

Hilarious and great for 3 to 5 year olds!
Reviewed in Canada on November 29, 2014Verified Purchase
I bought this book for my 3-year old and 6-year old nieces and they adore it, especially the 3-year old. I'd say that 3 to 5 years is probably the sweet spot for an age recommendation. The illustrations are hilarious and they find Mr. Fookwire's name to be a great source of amusement. The story is about Mr. Fookwire's attempts to get the squirrels in his yard to stop eating from his bird feeders. See, Mr. Fookwire loves his birds and the squirrels are a real menace. The squirrels turn out to be pretty creative, and they eventually find a way to make peace with the lonely old man. A great choice for girls or boys, and for anyone who likes funny children's books. Recommended!

Nice story but it gets old fast

The idea is nice and the story is okay. We are really big on books in my house and I just find this story gets so boring to read and it doesn't flow nicely. I like books that you enjoy reading over and over again.
