Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Illustrated with dramatic, soft-edged digital artwork, the 101 free-verse poems in this spacious collection present Christian messages from the Bible to talk about at home and in church groups. The frequent question-and-answer format adds to the conversational tone, starting with lines accompanying an image of a huge horse leaping across the end pages: “God loves the horse / how much more must he love you?” “Dance!” shows “the whole universe dancing around the sun.” In contrast is “Cataclysm!,” which discusses planets that are in uproar because “we sinned.” Some entries are lighthearted: just as you don’t put porridge in a car engine, the Bible says don’t put anyone except God in the center of your life. Most, though, are serious and may disturb some, even as they stress forgiveness: God transformed murderers such as Moses and St. Paul into heroic leaders—“what could he do for you?” At the bottom of each page is the biblical passage on which the poem is based, and appended sources are paired with “more things to think about.” Grades 1-4. --Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheers me up
By AElsewhere on November 12, 2021
The cheerful pictures and refreshing take on Biblical truths do my (adult) heart good. I leave the page open for the day, to keep reminding myself. Attached is an example. All are two page spread, one page of written content. It would be fun to see how a child responds to the material!

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect gift!
By AB92 on March 22, 2019
A neat book with beautiful artwork! I can’t wait to read them to my daughter! The illustrations in the chapters/devotions are taken from a variety of subjects from history to science to literature to actual scripture, all pointing back to the gospel. It’s really cool. I’m a huge fan of Sally Lloyd-Jones and I’m so glad I happened to find this book.

My daughter is almost 3. A lot of this will probably be over her head, but every night we read a chapter of The Jesus Storybook Bible, The Ology, or The Biggest Story just to get in the habit of reading about and discussing our amazing God. She does well with those (even if they’re still a little complex for her little mind) and she really enjoys that time. I’m sure this will be similar and maybe even better for her because they are short, little devotions.
