A Great Adventure Film
Verified purchase
Stephen Herek’s 1993 film, “The Three Musketeers,” adapts David Loughery’s screenplay based on the 1844 novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas for Walt Disney Pictures. The film focuses on d’Artagnan’s attempts to join the musketeers and protect the King of France from the scheming of Cardinal Richelieu. The film is a who’s-who of talent from the late-1980s and early-1990s, starring Charlie Sheen as Aramis, Kiefer Sutherland as Athos, Chris O’Donnel as d’Artagnan, Oliver Platt as Porthos, Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, Rebecca De Mornay as Milady de Winter, Gabrielle Anwar as Queen Anne, and Paul McGann as Girard & Jussac. While the film condenses a great deal from Dumas’s novel and heightens the action and humor, it’s an enjoyable movie with memorable acting (in particular Tim Curry) and some great action. It far surpasses the 2011 adaption of Dumas’s book. Coincidentally, only five years later Randall Wallace directed “The Man in the Iron Mask,” based on the third book in Dumas’s Musketeer Trilogy (officially known as “The d’Artagnan Romances”), and while stylistically different from this outing, the two create a Dumas Duology in the 1990s similar to Richard Lester’s 1973-1989 Musketeer Trilogy. In a way, some of the heroic characterizations in this film recall the later portrayals of likeable characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Herek’s film is particularly noteworthy as he uses character types that became more common in the next decade while filming this to resemble the great swashbuckling adventure films of the late-1980s and early-1990s, such as Spielberg’s “Hook” (1993) and Martin Campbell’s “The Mask of Zorro” (1998), with plenty of bright lighting, bold colors, and practical effects. This is the version of “Three Musketeers” that introduced me to the characters and remains a favorite nearly 30 years later.

The Three Musketeers 🇫🇷 (1993) Movie Review 🎥

Love this movie. It's never a dull moment, and parts of the movie were funny. Michael Wincott always plays a villain, but is a terrific actor. Oliver Platt is terrific and funny. Charlie Sheen is fun and clever. Keifer Sutherland is soft at heart but strong. Chris O' Donnell is not afraid of anything yet dedicated. Tim Curry did an excellent job playing the cunning villianous Cardinal. Love the actor and actress portraying the King and Queen. They played their part very well. I love the part where the king punches the Cardinal and kisses his beloved. Rebecca de Morney's portrayal of Milady De Winter was excellent. This is how I see their performance of the characters they are portraying. An awesome action movie to watch. My apologies for any misspellings.

Wonderful!! Movie came on time. A tie swashbuckling 1990s buddy comedy action movie. This movie has it all!! Drama, comedy, romance, action, and a story about 4 friends who stand together opposing tyranny, greed, and serving their country and protecting the King and Queen of France from the terrible Cardinal Richelieu, his secret spy My Lady Du Winter, and his right hand man Captain Rushford. These 4 men are sure to have the ladies swooning. Chris O’Donnell is D’Argntagnan a cheeky, cocky, and determined young man who wants to become a Musketeer. Oliver Platt is Porthos. A tall, dark haired man who loves his inventions, food, women, and loves fighting. Charlie Sheen is Aramis, a devout Catholic who is the most romantic of the 4 Musketeers, and loves to charm the ladies with his poetry. Finally Kiefer Sutherland is Athos. A once wealthy man with a tragic past keeps his emotions in and takes to drinking when he’s not on a mission. The leader of the Musketeers and although very troubled is a courageous and loyal man who has a heart of gold. All 4 of these men and their personalities combined make for one amazing underrated movie IMO. Perfect family movie!! Great job Disney!! All 4 actors did such a wonderful job and I can watch this movie over and over again and never get tired of it.

Condition not as advertised.

This being the holiday season I haven’t had time to watch it yet But here here my initial assessment....

I know this product was sold as used therefore I was not expecting it to be like new however to say this DVD is in good condition is a definite stretch. The case came cracked and broken and missing a chunk. The DVD had all sorts of scratches on top of it thankfully they do not appear to be deep scratches and hopefully they will not effect the dvd from being played smoothly. The bright side is that the playable side of the dvd appears to have only a few minor scratches therefore there is a good chance it will play without any issue. Hopefully that is the case however had I known the true condition of the DVD and case (which is not good as advertised) I would have purchased the DVD from someone else or spent a little bit more money and just purchased it new from a merchant.

Excellent Cast of Characters

I love this movie. Oliver Platt's humor is fantastic, Charlie Sheen's religious character is ironic, really, and Kiefer Sutherland is broody and serious - and I enjoy each of them. Chris O'Donnell's character is young, impetuous, and "entirely too bold" and he is the perfect choice for D'Artagnan. Gabrielle Anwar's Queen, Tim Curry's Cardinal, and Rebecca De Mornay's Countess round out the fantastic cast of this 1993 version of The Three Musketeers.

Displays small on modern TVs

We enjoyed the movie, but it is frustrating to have it in a small box in the center of the screen with 4 big black bars around it.

I'm sure some TVs could force it to stretch, but the few we have wouldn't.

I still think it's worth getting this movie... but if you can find it on bluray or a differerent DVD format it will work better on modern players.

So cheesy, but so good!
Verified purchase
It was a childhood favorite of mine and after years of not watching it I saw it on Amazon and had to have it. Compared to today's films it is definitely cheesy, but thats part of what I love about it. The acting is good and the script is pretty funny. I couldn't believe how many one liners I've used for years actually came from this film. Indulge your self and buy it. You won't regret it.

The story is funny and exciting

My favorite version of The Three Muskateers.

The cast is, imo, perfect. Chris O'Donnel. Keifer Sutherland, Tim Curry, Charlie Sheen, Rebecca De Morany, Michael Wincott, and Oliver Platt are all excellent in this version.

I am not very familiar with the two actors who play the King and Queen, Hugh O'Conor and Gabrielle Anwar but they are very good, too.

The backdrop, the story and the actors did very, very well. The story is funny and exciting. This is a movie where you cheer for the good guys and while booing the bad guys (namely Tim Curry and Michael Wincott) you enjoyed their performances very much.
