First of all, I must confess that I know next to nothing about the music of India. I am an amateur musician, myself, and I can play several instruments, and yes, I have seen and held a sitar. Howsoever, I couldn't begin to know how to play it and I'm not ashamed to admit that this instrument would have had me way out over my depth in no time flat. Then my brother-in-law introduced me to the artistry of Ravi Shankar, and I was totally enraptured by the sound of a sitar in the hands of a master. I purchased this CD (
) and it is a totally wonderful set of three ragas played by a master. As I admitted, I'm no expert in this form of music, but I am totally enthralled by Ravi Shankar's artistry and skill. I am definitely planning to get a few more of his CD's in the not-too-distant future. I certainly recommend this CD and I'm pretty sure you'll like it as much as I do.
I can only agree with the other reviewers' praise for this "Three Ragas", but purchasers should be aware that this remastering, from 2000, is monaural. As a note in the booklet explains: "Because the original stereo master tapes were damaged, the original monophonic master tapes were used to produce this reissue." While it is disappointing not to have it in stereo, this performance by the young Shankar in 1956 was so thrilling that I didn't immediately notice that it was monaural. "Raga Jog" especially, is one of the most exciting pieces of music ever performed--east or west.
Strongly recommended if you're a fan of Ravi Shankar's or the instrument sitar or looking to get introduced to the indian classical music. Good "feel" of Indian classical music without the complexities. Relaxed easy listening.
