Whyborne, Griffin, and their friend Christine travel to Threshold Mountain, a place of dark legend long before the mine burrowed into its heart. A contingent of Pinkertons—including Griffin’s ex-lover Elliot—already guard the mine. But Griffin knows better than anyone just how unprepared the detectives are to face the otherworldly forces threatening them.
Soon, Whyborne and Griffin are on the trail of mysterious disappearances, deadly accidents, and terrible secrets. Is Elliot an ally, or does he want to rekindle his relationship with Griffin? And how can Whyborne possibly hope to compete with the stunningly handsome Pinkerton—especially when Griffin is hiding secrets about his past?
For in a town where friends become enemies and horror lurks behind a human mask, Whyborne can’t afford to trust anything—including his own heart.
Threshold is the second book in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America.

Attival at the mining town bring one shock after another, the first being that the place is filled with Pinkerton's who have taken over security, and Griffin's former lover, Elliott, is now running the show and, guessing the relationship between the two, doesn't miss an opportunity to let Whybourne know how close he and Griffin were, as well as some facts about Griffin's background his friend would prefer to forget. This makes Whybourne's shaky foundation ever more uneasy and interferes with their investigation. The suspicion they are treated by the townspeople doesn't help and any attempts to question anyone either results in someone dying or simply disappearing. So far, only two men have come back from a trek into the woods around the Threshold. One was Elliott, the other one of the miners who has since disappeared. A search for the miner and a warning not to trust "anyone who's gone into the wood" is unheeded, of course, and what the two find when they go into the mine is as shocking and earthshattering as their discoveries in "Widdershins."
There are no ghosts in the mine, but something much, much worse.
Occasionally the second novel in a series manages to fall below the mark in interest or excitement. Threshold does not. If anything, it's more intense in both areas. Besides giving us more background on Griffin, as well as the relationship between Caroline and Whybourne, the suggestion that the exraterrestrial/supernatural beings of "Widdershins" exist there but in other parts of the state as well. Whybourne's insecurities are intensified by the presence of Griffin's former lover but we could've done without (Spoiler Warning) having Elliot pay for his perfidy by sacrificing himself to save the others. That old cliche has been run into the ground and it would've been much better for him top survive to see how his lies changed the relationship between the two for the better and not for worse. Whybourne does manage some acts of bravery on his own and, with Griffin and Caroline, who continues to be an example of a strong woman in a society determine to make women weak and dependent.
A good story giving more depth and continuation of the two's relationship, and hopefully, more adventures to come.

Whyborne out of his comfort zone is so adorable, so funny and at times awkward. He is no leader but for his lover and his best friend Christine he will face anything. Griffin is patient and loyal, he accepts Whyborne's quirks and loves him anyway. Christine is a force to be reckoned with. She is trustworthy and is always in the thick of things. The banter alone was hilarious and full of sarcasm only Christine can pull off.
The investigation is unpredictable, it takes them to caves and forests, dusty mines and saloon's bar in attempts to uncover just what is going on. Someone tries to split them apart, there is betrayal and jealousy, fear and horrific monsters bent on obliterating everyone on their path. Both miners and Pinkertons come together against common enemy. It's an exciting battle for their lives. My imagination was working overtime. I loved the danger, the tender moments and the despair that everyone felt, and yet they risked everything to put a stop to otherworldly creatures that haunt the mountains. It was awesome spine-chilling read, and I loved every page!!!
I put this paragraph in my review of the first book in the series, and it still holds for me: As a gay man, I'm ecstatic to find characters that are well written, and don't embody some of the more irritating stereotypes. I am also happy to find a character in Whyborne that is a well written complicated character that runs more effeminately gay without losing his strength or being portrayed as just "the woman in the relationship".
I feel the story's current focus was fantastic, but I also appreciate the growing story arc between these books. You could pick them up out of order, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice.

Following the events of Widdershins, Threshold takes our two heroes to a mining town, where dark and terrible things are happening. Once again there's an unearthly mystery to solve, atmospheric settings and a healthy dose of peril. Also probably the single funniest line I've read in a book, ever, uttered by a mortified Whyborne at Griffin's insistence.
And that's what I read these books for most of all -- Whyborne and Griffin themselves. I love this couple, and I loved watching their relationship develop in this second installment of what is already one of my all-time favourite series.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance novel along with the sci-fi fantasy in the story. I read it until I'd finished because I wanted to see what happened in the end of the story. A very nice story that makes you wanting to see just how it ends.

Empfehlenswert!
