This question takes Cork on a journey through time as he unravels the story of Meloux's 1920s adventure in the ore-rich wilderness of Canada, where his love for a beautiful woman, far outside his culture, led him into a trap of treachery, greed, and murder.

The past and present collide along the rocky shores of Thunder Bay, where a father's unconditional love is tested by a son's deeply felt resentment, and where jealousy and revenge remain the code among men. As Cork hastens to uncover the truth and save his friend, he soon discovers that his own life is in danger and is reminded that the promises we keep - even for the best of friends - can sometimes place us in the hands of our worst enemies.

I am a life long reader - and I read the whole genre of literature from Politics to basket weaving
with one exception, I don’t read romance novels. Kruger’s books, all 18 + of them, are without
exception the overall best writer I have ever read. After reading the first one I was hooked - I now
have all of them. He tells the story in such a way you are there with him, walking in the woods,
or facing whatever obstacles he encounters. He has a “sit on the front porch rocking chair” demeanor
that comes thru in all of his novels. I have but one promise & that is you won’t be disappointed.

Truthfully, I sometimes help out at the library. Looking for a new detective series to read, I came across Detective Cork. Another plus is of Northern Minn., where my mom came from. Believe it or not this particular book was not at any of the local libraries with 100 mi. area. When I read the description for this story. I said outloud that this story is the missing link to the Old Man background. This book is an important must read. Could not put it down.

The setting for this title is Canada. Krueger does a good job bringing it to life.

The story is really Henry's and spans seventy years of the old man's life. Cork is forced to step away from a crisis with his family to help the old man connect his past. In the process, people lose their lives and long standing mysteries are resolved.

I found it to be a fast, engrossing read.
