A magnificent description of the cruel reality that occurs day by day, not only in Mexico, but also in many other of our latinoamerican countries. Together with the evil of the cartels and mafia demons, shows also the kindness and compassion of good local people who help the immigrants in their tragic journey in search for a better life, which they also have the right to enjoy. I like the details of the narrative, which at the beginning I believed excesive, but as the story progresses I found necessary, important and desirable. A very good novel which brings to light the sad bitterness of those who dare to confront all kind of risks and dangers to pursue the slim possibility of having a better life.

I read this book in Spanish. The only good thing I can say about the book is that it was translated into Latin American Spanish, though the repeated misuse of the word “machete” was almost impossible to believe. This book’s greatest sin isn’t that it’s an appropriation, but rather that it is very far from a literary effort, though it was marketed as such. A modern-day Grapes of Wrath? Ridiculous. The book reads like the rough draft of a cheap miniseries script. Shallow character development. The main character (Lydia) has been criticized because she purportedly acts and thinks like a gringo. Hard for me to say, because none of the characters seemed to amount to other than an Internet meme. The narration flip flops between first person and omniscience, from paragraph to paragraph, to cheaply advance the story. Each chapter reads like a thrill ride with a quick, convenient resolution. I had to force myself to finish this book. If you want to read great books about a migrant’s’ plight, I highly recommend The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande and The Circuit by Francisco Jiménez.

This is a great fiction novel addressing a global problem, "immigration" , at some points very dramatic and exaggerated but with the only intention of enhance the story. Some critics say it's very racist which I didn't perceive. I do understand why it can be upsetting at not completely analyzing the whole problem and tagging Mexico and other central American countries as narco countries but for the purpose of a fiction novel it's really outstanding
