"Time for Surprises" is the fourth in the author's Solvik series to be translated from Norwegian into English. The language is very descriptive and humorous, and reads much smoother than most translations. The story is full of surprises -- just like the title promises.

Some of these surprises are funny (thanks to an outspoken Grandma who is much smarter than she appears), and a few are sad (most notably the dissolution of a long-time marriage). The main characters are in their 30's, which is slightly older than the majority of romance novels. These characters have learned a few lessons along the way.

This is a sweet romance with a little hugging and kissing, plus some longing glances. Other more graphic references are used for humor or pathos. Overall this book is extremely entertaining with good character development, an intriguing story, and cultural references from Norway that sound enticing. As number 4 in a series of 7, it makes me want to read the rest of the series about this strange and passionate family.

I absolutely enjoyed this story. The title is spot on; lots of surprises. I enjoyed spending time with some of the original characters and then the new ones. The surprises showed the awesome storytelling ability of this author. The siblings inherit a hotel. The father seems to be dictating their lives from the grave. This is where everything gets interesting and suddenly the hotel is like the afternoon stories, and those are difficult to turn off. That's equivalent to not closing this book once you start it. There were so many surprises that I could not figure out how they would get wrapped up in the end. As I said earlier, this author is a wonderful storyteller. She wrapped up everything nice and neat adding in a bit of thrill. I definitely recommend this book.

This well-written story certainly lived up to its title and I thought it was a great read. Miranda has a rough time of it when her family inherits their father’s new hotel. There are devastating and shocking surprises around every corner and yet she handles each catastrophe with strength and resilience; even though her heart is shattered into a million pieces. I really felt for her, and wanted her to find the love she deserved. The characters were interesting; especially Kitty, being the cool grandmother everyone would love to have. If you enjoy reading family drama and sweet romance, you will love this story.

Love it! My favorite in the Solvik series so far. Witty and quick remarks from the first line make it nearly impossible to stop reading until the last page. Great flow and lots of dialogue.
The characters are easy to relate to, and I especially appreciate the way they are intertwined with the by now familiar characters from the earlier books in the series. Recommend reading books 1-3 first, you'll enjoy book 4 even more! If only such a hotel existed, I'd go visit for sure. So make yourself comfortable and enjoy reading!

Barfelt is an eloquent writer. I'll be reading more of her novels.

Time for surprises is a very apt title for this gentle romance set in Norway. It starts with a family inheriting a hotel from their father. Miranda our main character is set to run the operation as per her father’s wishes, as her husband, Vidar, gets the lowly job of janitor. The sisters Miranda, Isabel, Jasmine, brother Tony and recently revealed half-sister Celine are forced to work together. The fact that they are all very different characters adds to the tension. There is a lot to get on with and the disasters and mishaps follow quickly. There are good characters here and they are quite well developed. My issue was mostly with the tone of the book, the translation from Norwegian might be a factor. There was humour and romance there but at somewhat inappropriate moments; for instance a fat policeman having a rather slapstick moment before a rather grisly discovery. I would like to read more of this writer as her character development is good and she brings the beautiful scenery to life, maybe a more out and out romance would suit me better.

I've read all of the Solvik books so far, and this one is my favourite. Once again we meet new characters, this time a whole family who moves to the town to take over the running of a hotel. Right from the beginning, you realise that Miranda, the protagonist, has problems with her husband Vidar, even if she can't see them yet. And you also realise that this is no ordinary family, with an unknown half-sister turning up, another sister who only has relationships with married men, and a wacky grandmother who carries her little dog everywhere she goes, dressed in identical outfits!
The story follows the challenges Miranda faces as hotel manager, and the various misadventures that continuously cause her problems. There is also a scene that will have you laughing one moment, then leave you in shock the next!
Very well written, and a great read. I can't wait for the next one!
