5.0 out of 5 starsEverything you'll ever want from a romance book... Or any book for that matter.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 3, 2016
Every once in a great while, a book comes along that not only inspires you, but also invigorates you. You finish that book with goals and dreams bouncing around in your head. You have new aspirations and a thirst to DO something. Something bigger than you've ever done.
I've read all of Lauren Layne's books, and all her books have made me sigh happily or squeal with delight at the wonderful piece of fiction I just couldn't put down... but this was different. Why? I'm not sure. I can't quite put my finger on it since I just finished reading it a whopping ten minutes ago, but here's my hypothesis:
The women in this book are fierce. Not in an alpha-b!%*h sort of way, but in an independent, motivated, winner-takes-all kind of way.
They KNOW what they want and what they don't. They work hard, they sacrifice, and even though they suffer along the road to glory, they don't let that stop them. They get there.
Now, I know you're thinking 'Nicole, what are you blathering on about? You just read a romance book about two people defying the odds and hooking up. Not a self-help book on how to boost your potential.' But hear me out...
Brook had her happily ever after jerked out from under her. Her groom-to-be? Gone. Her fairy tale wedding? Ruined. Her career? Left in shambles.
But did she lock herself in a closet with a dozen sleeves of Girl Scout cookies and a five gallon bucket of Häagen-Dazs? No! She got off her butt, flew across the country, applied for a highly-coveted job with a successful group of wedding planners, and went about her life. Was it perfect? No, not at first. But she KNEW it could be. She knew if she worked hard enough, success and security and all the things she knew she wanted out of life would eventually come around.
Was she planning to fall @$$-over-face in love with a rich hotel mogul? Definitely not. But that's exactly what happened. And it happened because things in life, especially the good things, happen when you least expect them to (at least, according to John Lennon).
She was throwing everything she had into a career and a life in NYC. Meanwhile, Mr. Right just happened to come along.
Was it because she was busy swiping her little heart out on Tinder? No.
Was it because she was pouring hard earned money into mini-skirts and tube tops to wear to the bar on ladies night? No.
It was because she was molding herself into a bold, fierce, independent woman. A woman she could be proud of. A woman worthy of a real man. A man like Seth Tyler.
Again, you're probably thinking 'Nicole... You're rambling. This isn't a review. It's a monologue-turned-rant.' But bear with me...
After I finished reading, I tossed my kindle on the bed and went straight to my computer. And I typed out a list of goals. These goals started off small. Like, 'organize office' or 'cancel Netflix subscription'. (Ultimately, I scratched that one, seeing as I have two children who watch Netflix while I'm working, but nevermind that...) But eventually, they grew until I had things like 'finish 5 book series before Halloween' and 'send latest book to 100 bloggers' and 'pay off student loans before 2020'.
Why am I just now doing this?
Because this book INSPIRED ME. Now, I like to think I'm an organized and motivated person, but really, I'm not. However, I am a passionate one. But every once in a while, I get in a rut where I just don't have the energy to be passionate. And before I read this book, I was in one of those slumps. But then, I turned on my Kindle and started reading. And as I was introduced to this delightful cast of people, I found that passion reigniting. I found that I wanted to get off my butt and get things done. I wanted to be like Brooke and Heather and Jessie and even Seth. I wanted to have DRIVE.
I fell in love with these characters, and throughout the course of the story, they pushed me to do better. To BE better.
Was that was Lauren was aiming for when she wrote this book? No. Probably not. She probably didn't think that a small town girl from Missouri (who was an English major in college but ultimately dropped out before she could graduate with her bachelors because she got married, divorced, and had a kid) would follow her as an author and one day be struck with an overwhelming need/urge/obsession to CHANGE her life because of a book.
But that's exactly what just freaking happened.
Like Brooke, life has thrown me some curveballs. But unlike Brooke, I settled.
Do I love my life? Yes.
Is it everything I want it to be? No... No, it's not.
But maybe it can be.

How the heck did I get all of THAT out of one book?
Who knows.
But I did.
And maybe, just maybe, you will too.

3.0 out of 5 starsCute but not worth shooting to the top of your TBR
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 15, 2019
Brooke Baldwin has fled to NYC after her fiance leaves her at the altar...in handcuffs. Finding out the man you love is liar is bad enough, but finding out he's a notorious white collar criminal? Well that's just about enough to shatter this wedding planner's world. But once she lands in New York, Brooke gets a job with the best wedding planners in the city - the Wedding Belles. Her first client is a beautiful hotel heiress names Maya Tyler with an overbearing and exceptionally controlling older brother who is writing the checks.

Seth Tyler, said bride's older brother, hates the fact that his sister is getting married and takes distrust to a whole new level when it comes to her fiance. He micromanages the snot out of Maya's wedding planning hoping to throw a wrench in the process. However, the only plans that get thrown are his own when he finds himself falling for Maya's wedding planner.

When I have a hard time sympathizing with a character, it makes the book hard for me to enjoy. Brooke is unfortunately a hard character for me. On the one hand she is overly bubbly and romantic, but at the same time she also is also somehow super untrusting and jaded? She was just a bit too much for me. Seth is fine, kind of unremarkable, but a nice romantic hero and his romantic gesture at the end is spot on. But their relationship in general just seemed so....mismatched. I just didn't *get it*. The steamy bits just seemed gratuitous, like sexual attraction was all they had going on. I did not feel an emotional connection in the slightest. And their SLIGHT SPOILER separation towards the end was longer than their entire relationship but we are expected to believe they would just pick up everything where they left off? I am skeptical.

I really liked Maya and Grant and I 100% want their story, but it's sad that I was more invested in them than Brooke and Seth. Won't say too much there because...spoilers. The other Belles seem fun, and I am excited to read their stories in the rest of the series, but their friendship was not highlighted in the same way the women in other Lauren Layne books are, e.g., The Central Park Pact series.

There's some steam, so if you're not a fan of that, I don't think the story is worth it (there are some books that I 100% are worth reading anyway and just skimming the steam. this is not one of them). But if you're a romance fan, this is cute enough to spend your time on. I am hopeful for the rest of the series as well because they seem to be rated higher.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Have and to Hold by Lauren Layne

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD was such a fantastic story and I'm so excited for more of this great new series, The Wedding Belles, from author Lauren Layne. I absolutely love this setting and this group of ladies. Brooke Baldwin is new to New York City and to the Belles, but she fits right in with Alexis and Heather.

Brooke owned her own wedding planning company in California but after notoriously being humiliated at the altar when the Feds arrested her fiancé on her wedding day she desperately needed a fresh start in a new place. She may not be too trusting of men but she still believes in love and the magic of a beautiful wedding day. Her first assignment is to help Maya Tyler, a hotel heiress, plan her dream wedding. It all goes well except for the interference of Maya's older brother, Seth, who happens to be footing the bill and demanding approval on all decisions. Not that he was worried about the money, he was just staying close because he didn't believe Maya's fiancé Neil was who he said he was and it didn't hurt that the wedding planner was drop-dead gorgeous.

Brooke and Seth get off on the wrong foot right from the start. Seth is determined to stop the wedding and Brooke is determined to prove herself to her new boss by planning the perfect wedding. The problem is they find each other irresistible, and can't seem to fight the attraction. It's not quite an enemies to friends romance but for their own reasons Seth and Brooke each do their best to avoid each other and the feelings they can't seem to help.

Seth is a grumpy workaholic with no time for a relationship especially with a woman as sweet as Brooke who still believes in happily ever after. I love watching those determined bachelors fall. Ms. Layne creates amazing sexual tension between these two and I absolutely love the banter. And of course, it's crazy sexy every time they do give in to their desire. These two are just plain hot together and I really enjoyed this story! 4 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Brooke and Seth

This was a really great book. Brooke Baldwin is a talented wedding planner that loves her job. She even planned her big day but right before she was coming down the aisle, the FBI arrest her con man fiance. She is devastated and all her clients quit working with her in Los Angeles. She decides to move to New York City to start anew and joins Wedding Belles as a wedding planner. She meets Seth Tyler through his sister Maya who is getting married and Seth has control of the money.

Brooke is still trying to get over finding out the man she loved was a con man. She questions if anything was real. She's trying to start fresh by joining Wedding Belles in New York City. Even though her heart was crushed and broken, she still believes in love and hope. She just hopes that one day she will find a good man to love her. Her first client is Maya Tyler and she sadly gets Seth in the process. He's gorgeous and they have a pull to one another but he's controlling and doesn't know how to fit a woman in his life. They tend to butt heads several times but they are both attracted to one another.

Seth is the President and CEO of Tyler Hotel Group. He was always groomed and meant to be these things but he got them earlier than he expected when his father died of a heart attack eight months ago. He is definitely talented but he has a tendency to be a control freak. His younger sister Maya lets him know that she's getting married to a man that she's only been dating for 3 months. He doesn't know really anything about this man and hasn't even met him. He takes a big part in the planning process because he's paying for the wedding and he just wants to protect his sister.

Definitely worth reading. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

In the first of a new series from author Lauren Layne, we are introduced to the Wedding Belles, wedding planners extraordinaire. Brooke Baldwin is a recent transplant from Los Angeles, having moved to NYC after her fiancee was arrested at the alter of her own dream wedding. Once word got out that she didn't even know that her own fiancee was the next Bernie Madoff, her business tanked, and Brooke needed to start over.
Her first job in NYC with the Belles, is with Maya Tyler, heiress to the Tyler hotel group. When Maya shows up with her brother, not her fiancee, Brooke is taken back by the intensity and pure heat emanating from Seth Tyler. Seth is not happy with his sister's upcoming nuptials, mainly because he has not only never met the groom, but he never even knew his sister was dating, and the fact that Maya has only known her fiancee for three months, sets off some red flags.
When Maya's fiancee continues to be a no-show to all of their appointments with Brooke, Seth hires a private investigator to dig in to the fiancee's background.
In the meantime, Brooke and Seth start up a hot and cold relationship, neither wanting more, but freaking out when they realize that they do want more. And when Seth goes and does the unthinkable, Brooke has to decide whether or not to follow her heart or give up on her happily ever after dreams.
I really enjoyed the start of this new series. Ms. Layne just gets how to write about modern day, realistic romances, and how they aren't all sunshine and roses, but that they take work, and you might not always agree with everything your partner does, but in the end, your true feelings will win out. I can't wait to see what else this series has to offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promising Series!

It's no secret that I am a fan of pretty much everything that Lauren Layne writes. I can't tell you how excited I am that she has a brand new series for me to look forward to. To Have and To Hold is the first book in The Wedding Belles series about a group of wedding planners in New York City.

I loved the characters in this book. Every single one of the "Belles" were awesome and I can't wait for each of them to get their own book and story. The friendship and interactions between this group of women left me smiling on more than one occasion. Brooke and Seth had me in their corner from the very first page. The attraction between the two was undeniable and the chemistry was dripping off the pages. I enjoyed every minute from the initial denial to the inevitable between the sheets action.

The story flowed so smoothly that it did not feel like it was 384 pages long. I was able to get through it quickly and easily. I think it is because Layne writes with the perfect amount of humour, heat and a whole lot of relateable experiences. Her characters had typical flaws and spoke with the same kind of wit and slang that made it feel like they were sitting in your living room. In other words, she made the characters believable and likeable.

Lauren Layne continues to be a romance author who's books I will automatically read without reading the synopsis or knowing anything about the books. She has proven to me that she can fill my romance needs and deliver above average books in the genre. I can't wait to return to New York City and "The Wedding Belles."

The Book Goddess
5.0 out of 5 stars Meet the Wedding Belles - a new sexy series from the amazing Lauren Layne
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 31, 2016

Welcome to the Wedding Belles, the premier wedding planners in New York City. Book 1 in Lauren Layne's new Wedding Belles series is a must-read for romance lovers. What I love about LL's stories, is that they are always the perfect mix of funny and sexy. The women are people you wish you could be friends with and the men are always perfect for them. There isn't just one type of "perfect man" and that's what makes these books so fun! In this story, we meet Brooke, a wedding planner who is fleeing from the implosion of her wedding (yeah, the groom to be got taken away in handcuffs by the FBI at the alter...yeah, take that in) and has landed an amazing job with the Wedding Belles. Brooke's first big assignment is to plan the wedding of Maya Tyler, heir to the Tyler Hotel fortune (think Hilton but classier). Now enter the complication to this perfect scenario...the bride-to-be's brother, Seth, who is determined to stop the wedding. Seth was a hint Mr. Big from Sex and the City (only much younger) and Mr. Darcy (swoon!). The attraction is instant and the sparks fly from the first meeting of the pair. I enjoyed the way this romantic pair complimented each other and challenged each other. Super sexy and super romantic...though is it bad that the real romantic hero for me was Grant...Seth's best friend. Though he was only in a few scenes...he is the one that really made my heart go pitter-patter! Overall, a fantastic introduction to a new group of LL characters for us to fall in love. I cannot wait for the next book, For Better or Worse.

I really loved this one and it's classic Lauren Layne at her best. Lots of snark, a little angst, and the eventual HEA. This series reminds me of the Sex, Love, & Stiletto series but instead of working for a magazine, these entertaining women work as wedding planners. They are all strong, independent, and successful and able to hold their own with the men in their lives. Can't wait for more stories from these ladies.

Brook Baldwin is looking for a fresh start in NY. After her own wedding spectacularly implodes on the big day, customers are leaving her successful wedding planning business in the dust. So taking this job and starting over is the right move for her. Her first client is one of the toughest she's ever had. Well, not the bride, she's great. The bride's brother not so much. He's bossy, opinionated, and oh so sexy. He thinks his sister is about to make the biggest mistake of her life and wants Brook to help make the wedding never happen. A little difficult considering she's planning the event! But Seth is determined to stop this one way or another!

A fun entertaining read that I would highly recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars What can you expect from an author who constantly refers to sex and the city? Cliche garbage.

Lauren Layne has authored quite a few books so I just assumed I would enjoy To Have and to Hold, her first in the Wedding Belles series, I could not have been more wrong. The beautiful cover, sound plot, interesting first chapter seduced me only to end in disappointment.... kind of like the con men featured in the book.

Brooke relocates to NYC after the Fed's arrest her groom at the alter, while not having great faith in our policing system, even I think that's a bit ridiculous. At any rate, Brooke meets Seth, the older brother of Maya, one of her clients from Wedding Belles and for some reason they clash. Again, for some unknown reason Seth is surly and bad tempered towards Brooke and maybe towards people in general. Why? I guess because the author felt this would make for a more interesting story but it just doesn't ring true. We have no background as to why. In fact, Seth is actually a sweet guy.

The truly foul tempered one is Brooke. She constantly lashes out at Seth spewing incredibly cruel comments, later saying "Oh, I didn't handle that well did I?" "Why hasn't he called?" She is a strange, selfish and unlikable character.
(Her parents and many others loose their retirement funds in her ex's ponzi schemes and she doesn't want to testify at his trial, she just wants to be left alone.

The climax revolves around Seth hiring a private investigator to research his sister's fiance and Brooke's ex's whereabouts when he eludes prison. She finds this so offensive she again verbally unloads her nastiness on him and walks around calling him dishonest? Oddly she had kinder sentiments towards her ponzi scheming ex, which was quite confusing. I think most people would agree the background check to be prudent and irresponsible if he failed to do so considering the family's wealth.

So as these simple, stupid stories go, Seth makes the cliche grand gesture in the end to get the girl. A happy ending for me would be him washing his hands of her and moving on to greener pastures. But what can you expect from an author who quotes sex and the city throughout the book?

It gets one star because I am having a dialogue about the book versus just saying it was garbage..

This was a new author and series for me. I was very pleasantly surprised. I really liked this book.
Seth and Brooke meet under not the best of circumstances. She has been hired to plan his sister, Maya's wedding. A wedding he has no intention of ever allowing to take place. Seth has never met his soon to be brother in law, but his gut tells him something is not right.
Both Brooke and Seth have had their hearts broken by people they thought loved them. While his experience has made him skeptical and distrusting about true love. Hers has never wavered. Brooke believes there is good in just about everyone and true love is just waiting around the right corner. The ever optimistic wedding planner.
As much as she and Seth are not ready to dive back into the dating game themselves, they can't seem to fight the instant attraction they feel for each other.
This was a great story. It was well written, told in dual points of view. There is no cheating, no cliffhanger and ends with an HEA. I loved the characters, and can't wait to read the others stories.

Layne has a beautiful way with words by capturing every day feelings and situations into a book we can get lost in. The characters couldn't be more opposite but yet are instantly attracted. Seth is a multi-millionaire hotel owner with a habit of being a tad bit controlling. Brooke is a recently jilted bride with a diminishing career in the wedding planning biz until moving to New York to work for the Belles. She's sweet, polite, snarky and blunt to a point. Seth is arrogant, alpha, bossy but yet somewhere in there he has a heart that only one woman can bring out. The ladies at the Wedding Belles are fantastic in their own roles and each personality makes the series very well rounded. Who doesn't love a romance book revolving around wedding planning in NYC? I fell in love with the Hamilton House and I'm not sure it even exists. Beautiful setting descriptions and secondary characters to round out a fun and sexy read. My copy was given through Netgalley for my honest review.

This is a great story, well written and fast paced. The Wedding Belles features a small group of wedding planners. Brooke and Seth were great as a couple! They have their funny, sweet and hot moments. When Brooke and Seth are together you can feel their instant intense attraction. Even though no one can explain how this happening. Seth is controlling and mysterious! Brook was a very likable character, she is funny and smart!
"This thing between us – I’m not going to pretend it’s not there, but I’m also not going to action it."

This book had the perfect blend of romance, humor and sexiness. My only complaint is that in some parts it was a little bit slow for my taste but overall it was good! Looking forward for the next story!
