First off Tom cruise shows off just how much his acting ahs improved over the intervening years. This time Maverick felt more real and less like a walking propaganda add. He felt way more human and despite the wise cracks in the film had a depth and maturity that was damn good. He felt like a person struggling to live up the myth that his reputation had built. That made this one of in my opinion Ton Cruises better performances.
The story itself was a nicely crafted story that lays a COD:Top Gun edition fantasy over a deeper story about two people who share a loss and a man who is struggling under the weight of what his life has created. All this while balancing the act including as much as possible form the original film in a vaguely believable manner (Much ahs already been said military veterans on those plot holes I shall not digress into them). You get a great adrenaline boosting popcorn film with a decent dose of story. There is little wonder this film has blown up as big as it has. The action sequences with aircraft alone make this film mind blowing great. I have never seen a film shoot aerial sequences so damn well and make you almost feel like you in the plane with them. The final dogfight is stunning and high lights the crazy stuff 5th gen fighters can do. (I have been to EAA many a year and seen the F-22 do things like 5th gen fighters in this film, so yeah it right up there.)
If you want to burn off 2 hrs and 10 minutes and enjoy yourself the whole time I highly recommend this. You will enjoy it (just try not to dwell on the "mission" too hard.)
for it's flaws. Maverick is chalked full of cheesy one liners, childlike onscreen "beefs" between pilots, some not-so-great acting and of course, beautiful shirtless actors looking like they were yanked from a vat of baby oil just before playing a game of football on a sandy beach.
The action/flying scenes or on the other hand, is what made this movie so great, in my opinion.
I have never seen anything like it and knowing these actors were pulling some serious G's while giving lines in order to get the shot is NEXT LEVEL!
All in all, if you were a true fan of TG and somehow haven't managed to see Maverick, you won't regret this purchase.
