In this 5th story, Kaem’s newfound physical fitness is letting him perform at an astonishing level in physical endeavors such as soccer, and martial arts.
The company he, Arya Vaii, and Gunnar Schmidt founded to commercially develop his time-stopping discovery is making money hand over fist. Currently, their profits come from their use of the phenomenal physical properties of a time-stopped segment of space-time to build rockets.
But now they’re building their space tower. Taking off at a thirty-degree angle from eastern Virginia, it’s 200 kilometers long and a hundred kilometers high. By placing the interior of their spacecraft—and its passengers—in stasis they can accelerate launches at fifteen gravities, reaching orbital speeds before the craft leaves the rail. This lets them put payloads in orbit for a thousand times lower cost than a rocket!
The world, and some unscrupulous people, are turning to Kaem and his company to further our exploitation of orbital space…

BUT
The plot was so full of holes it was basically fantasy. Absurd hand wavium levels of dysfunction.
The governmental/legal portion was so clunky it felt like the wheels were square.
Once a bill has been passed and signed by the president IT BECOMES A LAW. It stops being referred to as a ‘bill’. This a vital distinction since actions taken in regards to a ‘bill’ are *not* legal while actions taken in regards to a ‘law’ are presumptively legal.
Additionally, a multi million dollar company’s legal team would at least be monitoring the congressional register in case *bills* being voted on could impact the company. Since the company would actually be NAMED in a bill seizing said company... it doesn’t need mentioning that the space launch companies doing business with Staze would *also* be monitoring congress. And the delegation members from Virginia would take strong notice.
See, the problem it that this requires blind, stupid ignorance on the part of a massive number of people. And I just couldn’t buy that level of incompetence. At the very least, the party in opposition should have been raising enough hell to alert Staze to the bill. Before it got signed into law.
The plot also required the DoD to be willfully ignorant of new technology...being used in space launches...and talked about in the news for months...
I will continue to purchase this author’s books. This is SCIENCE fiction, and is worth the time *and* money. But I had to call out the poorly conceived sub-plot.
Okay, I suppose I can forgive Ayra the majority if her carelessly rude behavior to the man she supposedly always loved... But I hold the right change that designation back if, and when, she ever reverts to her usual ornery self. I only do this because Kaem is a little cinnamon roll, and she is only forgiven as long as she makes him happy.
Finally! It has been long awaited for Staze to branch out into other countries for the betterment of the entire world. All of the political drama that came to a head in these pages was entirely expected. I was merely wondering how Staze, and more directly Kaem, would meet these roadblocks and overcome them. Which he managed to achieve expertly and with much pizzazz.
I'm honestly entirely excited for the possibility of space stations in this book. It's been entirely Earth-bound up to this point that reaching into outer space with more permanence (like much of the sci-fi genre) will really broaden this series.
The way in which the POV bothered me in the previous book, is still minutely present in this iteration. Except this complication in my enjoyment for Dahners work is less present. I suppose I adjusted to the differences in story structure, and my only real issue was with compartmentalizing the stories pacing to my satisfaction.
This is not all bad. In many instances it is liberating in that it has allowed otherwise reluctant authors a chance to create in the face of an otherwise daunting and needlessly complicated book authoring industry.
Unfortunately many book concepts which should support no more than three or four books tend to be dragged out to many volumes trapping the reader into multiple purchases for a perhaps less than satisfying story progression.
THIS is NOT one of those "traps".
Mr. Dahners story progressions are very satisfying.
Good characters you can warm up to. Interesting premises that stimulate the imagination and mix just enough plausible with speculation to make for good reads that do go for several volumes but that you eagerly continue on with.
So if you'll excuse me I'm going to order the next book in THIS series and see what happens next.....
And really, there are only so many different ways Laurence Dahners can write these situations.
I absolutely love all of Laurence Dahners books, and if you are reading a review for book five in one of his series you probably do too, so read this book and continue to expect new and interesting technologies and applications of new technology. But don't expect new and improved writing or plot devices.
Worth reading as long as you can ignore your technical knowledge slightly. Maybe combine 2 books to make a proper full length novel.

He does love his technological utopia.
ALL the bugs and glitches in computer technology must have been fixed in the near future timelines!
All I can is lucky them that live there. I wish the biggest computer problem I ever had was it ran SLOW!
A good read. I will continue to read the books from this author.
