How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsAffordable detox phone
Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2022
Like many of us, I find myself wasting too much time staring at my smartphone and just wanted something that offered connection without distraction. This little phone is a super cheap and awesome option for just that. It has 4G, Wifi calling (if you need it), a satisfying way to end a conversation (flipping i shut), and browser that's such a pain to use that it won't suck you in the way a smartphone will (but still good to have in a pinch).

Now, YES - it's locked to Tracfone and it's sister brands (Simple Mobile, Total Wireless), so you'll need to use it on one of those networks, which are overpriced to compared to others (like Tello). And YES, it does have KaiOS, which is owned by Google. But, if you are concerned about Google's overreach (like me), just know that simply turning off Wifi, Bluetooth, and not creating a KaiOS account will practically eliminate Google's ability to track you in any meaningful way.

Now, there are certainly fancier and more premium alternatives out there (like Punkt or Lightphone), and you do lose the ability to have encrypted texts (like with iMessage or Signal), but considering that this thing is about 10 bucks, it's an absolute steal, and certainly worth a try if you are trying to break your digital addiction.

1.0 out of 5 starsHORRIBLE PHONE HORRIBLE COMPANY
Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2021
This company is horrible to deal with. I have had a track phone for the last five years. It was an emergency phone I kept in the car. During an emergency the phone did not work.

I later found out a system update knocked me off their system. Thanks for informing your customers.

I had to upgrade to a new phone which was this phone. I bought it 2/8/21. Three months later it stopped working. It appeared charged at 100%, but would not turn on.

I spent over an hour on the phone with tech support who insisted I had to take the cover off to give them a code. Why this code was not accessible by viewing account on the computer instead of these antics...not clear.
Why i had to spend an hour of my unpaid time on the phone completing "...their process" to check what was going on over their faulty ten dollar phone INSTEAD OF IMMEDIATELY SENDING OUT A REPLACEMENT PHONE......is unclear.
I canceled my account and threw the PHONE IN THE TRASH.
LEARN HOW TO PROVIDE PROPER SERVICE AND A GOOD PRODUCT.
SHAMEFUL BUSINESS PRACTICES. ....WHEN YOU TAKE PEOPLE'S MONEY YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE GOOD SERVICES.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is horrible.

This phone couldn't have been renewed. Read this. I decided to go with free phone service during the pandemic and was told I'll lose service 2/20/22 because they're changing to Volte. I'll lose service on my LG 441G because it's not Volte. This Alcatel was the nearest to it, so I bought the renewed one as it was cheaper. All the flips on tracfone and government sites were sold out.

It arrived from amazon next day and firstly I attempted to put the battery in and it appeared too long. I was afraid to force it in and break the phone, but then figured it's only 10.00 so, so what.
It went in and i put the back on. Later when wanting to check the Sims, I couldn't get the back off without prying it with a screwdriver. It is truly defective, and there's no arrows showing it slides one way or the other. There's a notch that appears to have to be pushed down or something, but it doesn't work. It actually took muscle and a screwdriver. It says to keep it on charge about 5 hours the first time. My battery filled in one day.

So, now to set it up. I'm reading the manual and it's telling me steps but there is no "Device" on this phone, as it says. I can't hear good and there also isn't an "Accessibility" as the directions say.
You can press buttons and there's a tone that stalls after each press. (That's not important, but geez.)

I tried activating it online 4x, I called tracfone and safelink 5x and was told by recording, "Your service is disabled." I knew that but it was supposed to be 2/20/22, not 1/31/22. I called 611611 (the emergency support number is still available) on the disabled phone and reached a person who said to give it awhile. I worked on this all day. They kept connecting me to a different support number that immediately disconnected. After 3x I yelled for them to stay on the 611611 with me until the other department answers.! A guy looked into it and told me my phone should be on by 11pm. They will call me then to make sure. It was working.
So, here's the phone info.
Come morning, 2/1/21, I wanted to call someone and it wouldn't work. I tried 3x and then realized it's telling me ,by recording, to use the area code. This was a local number I was calling. I tried that, and it connected. What? I have to dial an area code for local calls?

So, I'm playing with these buttons, and THERE IS NO SPEAKERPHONE. One of the answers on Amazon said there was. No. Not even mentioned in the manual. No speakerphone?

Also, the volume buttons are on the bottom right, where you hold the phone. So, when I pick up the phone, and open the lid, there's my volume gauge on a purple screen every time. I have to go back to my home screen every time. Who would put buttons where you grab the phone? So I put tape over those volume buttons so I don't get irritated every time I lift the lid.

Also, don't buy it for the music. That's only is enabled with headphones on.
Also, there's only cutsey ringtones, which irritate me. There should be one that's a normal ring, not all
melodies.

So, this phone goes back. I'll try another company that doesn't need Volte, if there's is one, so I can keep my LG. I set the Alcatel back to factory a few times to start over, thinking I was goofing up the phone. Nope. The phone is broke or just bad.

I will also call loved ones to tell them I might not have a phone for awhile, so not to get nervous if there's no answer. lol

However, Kudos to tracfone "CHAT" online. It actually works. Don't worry if you're 48th in line, they'll answer in less than 10 minutes. And it's a real human! I asked.
So, my advice is don't buy this cheap $9.99 renewed Alcatel that Amazon sells. You get less than you pay for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me

Documentation is great and I've figured out everything I need to know. I now just text BALANCE to 611611 since it's no longer displayed on the screen. Oh, this was an upgrade from an old Alcatel A392G. Tethering allows me to use my data on my laptop in case my home internet is down or if I'm in an area where I can't access public wifi.

Transferring contacts was easy using Bluetooth. Texting is also easier than on my old phone - that is it's easier and faster to change input methods. No doubt there's a learning curve but I couldn't be more satisfied. Standard "smart" phones are just not well suited to me because I spend a lot of time crawling under, around, and over vehicles I'm working on.

This has all the "smart" features i could possibly want with the durability of a flip phone. And the battery life is 3 to 4 times better than my old flip phone. I did update the OS as soon as I connected to my wifi - even before activating the phone. I leave "data" turned off unless I actually need to use it. No need for oversize pockets!

For ten bucks it's a winner!

For under $10? Howling economy Batsman, it's GREAT!
I needed a backup, a spare, a loaner for a household member. and it's good for your kids. It is rugged enough, unless they use it as a baseball or try bouncing it off the driveway. It is carrier locked to tracphone... so what? TP is inexpensive! A text message robot does most things for you! For a holdout, backup, or burner, this nice functional rugged phone is the essentials-phone, sms, email. outer shell/case is good. inner keys are large enough for my fat fingers. In short, it's a very good deal.

This was the perfect phone for my grounded 13 year old. I was able to contact her but it limited her ability to do all the things she was grounded from. I highly recommend this to all the parents of rebellious teenagers. I will keep this phone on hand or as I like to call it the "iGROUNDED" in case we have any future rule breaking 😄

1.0 out of 5 stars predictive texting feature does not work right-
Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021

Had an LG before I was forced to go to a 4G or higher. I use a tracfone flip phone and do NOT want to go to a smartphone. Smartphones are too big to fit in my front pocket of my jeans. More secure in the front pocket when I am working outside in the garden or yard. This new one is Alcatel and I definitely DO NOT LIKE IT. Won't do predictive text unless I choose it EVERY time I start a new text message. It is chosen in the settings for the phone, but that does not make it use predictive text. I have to choose it with each message. Even using it, it won't start sentences with a capital letter. I may send it back! Trying to get used to it, but...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds good to me

I have had a $600 Nexus unlocked phone I used with a pay as you go plan (lasted 5+ years)
I have had cheapo touch screen phones.
But dang is this blast from the past has the clearest best sounding voice calls.
Texting and internet....forget it. This is old school voice calls at a higher level of sound (to my ears) than the new high tech devices out there. I do not make calls on a regular basis and I don't answer calls. But when I need it to find someone in an emergency or just to say what is going on and when I will get there $9 can't be beat. Plus I transferred something like 500 minutes I never used from my higher end phones. $20 for 3 months is all I need to pay. I tip my hat to the $200 a month plans people are paying. It is good for the economy.

I bought one of these and a year's worth of service for my daughter. I did the setup for her and added a micro-SD card. I was so impressed I bought one for myself and replaced my old flip phone. The wi-fi allows you to make calls without using your minutes. Bluetooth allows you to transfer wallpaper and other items from the computer to your phone. Easily worth the $9.99 price tag. Looks like new. Works well for a simple phone. Buy it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Best To Avoid This Phone
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2021

What's Good ?
1. Phone is inexpensive.
2. Plans are cheap.
3. Standard micro-USB charger.

What's Bad ?
1. The display is *horrible* ! Not bright at all. Must be angled perfectly to see properly. Forget looking at it on a bright day.
2. Battery life sucks. Even just standby won't go more than a day or two.
3. There is a "store" unique to this phone. It DOES NOT WORK. Prompted to "update" but just crashed each time.

I wanted to simplify my cell phone usage, but this puppy is just not functional at a level we should expect in 2021. Please avoid it. You'll save much more than the 10-20 bucks. You'll avoid unnecessary stress.
