4.0 out of 5 starsFirst Trip Review from A Briggs & Riley User
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2019
Full Disclosure - I've been a Briggs & Riley (B&R) two-wheel suitcase user for the last 13 years, mostly for business travel with the occasional family vacation thrown in.

This was a Christmas present for my wife whose generic two-wheeled carry-on tended to tip over while stationary if not loaded just right. My only previous experience with Travelpro was a wheeled suiter that I think I used for a grand total of two times due to functionality issues (my poor choice vs. any specific issues with Travelpro design or quality).

To be clear B&R has been stellar, especially around their no questions asked repair warranty. I've had two different wheeled carry-ons and one 26 inch suitcase restored after airline/airport baggage handling destruction or B&R component failure. My two 28 inch suitcases lasted through several trips to Asia without any issue beyond cosmetic wear. I was willing to pay the price premium for the four current B&R pieces I have so that I didn't have to purchase anything in that size category again unless I wanted some feature/color upgrade - that is still my plan pending my comments below. Besides the price, the only other downside to B&R for me is that their pieces tend to be 1 - 3 lbs heavier than their competitors similarly sized bags which can be an issue, especially in Europe or Australia where the weight rules tend to be strictly enforced.

My wife didn't want a new carry-on and the amount of personal travel that we do wouldn't necessarily need the B&R durability that I needed for business travel. Nevertheless I vacillated between B&R and Travelpro domestic 21 inch carry-on spinners based on my previous experience with B&R. What convinced me to go with the Travelpro was:
a. The Platinum Elite wheeled luggage now seems to have a comprehensive warranty including airline induced damage as long as you register within the specified time period after purchase.
b. The Travelpro weighed 1.5 lbs less than the comparable B&R model.
c. The price of the Travelpro was a little over 60% less than the comparable B&R.
d. The Travelpro magnetically aligned wheels seemed like they would be a good feature to have if they functioned as advertised.
e. Wirecutter selected it as their top carry-on bag in a 2018 review.

We just returned from a holiday trip where my wife packed a significant portion of her clothes in the Travelpro and wheeled the bag around the LAX and Seatac airports. This one trip alone is making me seriously think about getting a spinner for myself despite my B&R strategy articulated above. The difference in the effort needed to carry my backpack on her spinner vs. on my 2 wheeled B&R was pretty stark, especially when I projected that onto some of the bigger airports I’ve had to cross to make connecting flights – your arm gets tired with the two wheeled suitcase when the computer backpack resting on it weighs 15 - 20 lbs and you have to walk a considerable distance.
Aside from the packing the capacity the magnetically aligned wheels seemed to work well for ease of movement in the crowds, all zippers functioned as they should when the bag was loaded, the adjustable height handle was used at a couple of different settings and she enjoyed the readily accessible outside pocket that easily held her 3 magazines and medium sized book. All in all the initial experience she had with the Travelpro was a good one. We didn’t use the bag in the expanded configuration (B&R has a better system and the Travelpro zipper expansion doesn't look to add much volume) nor the drop-in suiter, I doubt we’ll use the battery side pocket as intended and while having the telescoping handle rails inside the bag vs. outside (again B&R has a better system) is annoying for me personally my wife’s prior bag had the same configuration and she was used to it.
I’ll update this when I have any data on durability/reliability or warranty fulfillment (which is why I only gave it 4 stars). I hope this helps people who had the same questions I had when considering Travelpro Platinum vs. B&R and couldn't look at the Travelpro in person..

1.0 out of 5 starsNOT WHAT TRAVELPRO USED TO BE.
Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2019
Buyer beware!! This is a poorly designed, Asian manufactured, bag that WILL let you down (as it did me) right from the start. It does NOT represent the quality I remember from TravelPro’s heyday. THANK YOU PRIME!! ... for taking the bag back with FULL credit.

First of all, the placement of the new TSA lock is so prominent high-up on the outside corner of the bag that the zipper pulls get ripped out and/or bent. I took 4 flights and after each one the chrome plated zinc pulls were bent and distorted (they must catch easily on other bags as they are handled). Twice it took a screw driver to get the pulls to release. Bent them back in shape and tried to use the bag. On the last flight the tabs just broke off. The lock assembly itself is just plastic anyway, so it’s not a real deterrent anyway. See photos. Carriers were Delta and Air Canada.

Second, the zippers are not as heavy duty as they should be. The teeth are evidently too small. On one flight the zipper must have been depressed when the bag was stacked and it opened up in the middle. Zipper still closed .... big opening in the middle. I am lucky nothing came out onto the tarmac! See photos.

Lastly, ZERO, and I mean ZERO, customer support. Emailed TravelPro four days ago with no reply. Just an auto reply “we got your email” ....Pretty sad.

What good is a lifetime warranty if A) the bag is poorly designed and B) you can’t an email back? What good is a $300 bag that is going to break or have an issue with every flight, even if they agreed to “fix” it for free? Bad design is not something you want, even for free!

Do yourself a favor. Check out some other brands on Amazon before you pay a premium for this one ..... based on a long faded reputation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travelpro Platinum Elite 21” - Is it Carry-On Size?
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2019

Travel-Pro claims that the suitcase is 23" tall. I measured it, and they are correct. It is 23"tall. They have a short animated video on Amazon showing this suitcase fitting into an airline test box that is clearly marked as 22". How do you fit a 23" suitcase into a 22" box? The numbers didn't add up to me, so I went to my local airport (Orlando - MCO). I usually fly United, so I went to their check-in area to find "the box". As you can see from my picture, it fits! How is this possible? I brought a tape measure and measured the box, and despite the labels, it was actually 23" long.

Some notes: The other dimensions (14" and 9") on the box were correct, so your suitcase cannot be wider than 14" or deeper than 9". If you stuff the front pockets of the suitcase, it not fit anymore because it will be deeper than 9". I only tested one box from one airline. Your mileage may vary.

5.0 out of 5 stars About As Good As It Gets
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Vintage GreyVine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I travel a lot. I'm always looking for the grail, the perfect suitcase. This is very, very close.
It looks great. The ballistic nylon with the brown leather trim is gorgeous. Even the zipper pulls, with a stylish twist in the design, are eye catching.
There is a side pocket for a charger, and a cable to connect it to an external USB. I love this in the airport. I can sit and charge a device without fumbling in my briefcase. The pocket is capacious, holding all buy the largest chargers.
"Capacious" is indeed the word for this suitcase. Or
"Roomy."
Two front pockets are each surprisingly deep. A pocket behind them--double-zippered, is even larger. Another zipper is also on the outside. Unzip it and the suitcase expands at the bottom.
The interior has tie-downs to secure your load with two small, built-in pockets on the sides, one for toiletries. A mesh pocket encompassing the entire inside of the top is versatile, whether you are securing a pair of shoes, socks, undies, it is plenty big.
Leather handles on top and side are sturdy and good-looking. And, on the bottom is a "cup" which serves as another handle if needed.
The limited lifetime warranty is a huge plus. Life in the air is hard on suitcases.
So, "Almost perfect?" Yes, the one thing lacking is the handle slides are on the inside. Briggs and Riley mounts theirs on the outside for a flat interior. One...well let's don't call it a flaw. B&R has some problems of their own. The removable suiter in the Travelpro is great. The spinner wheels are the finest I've ever spun through an airport.
Travelpro is a superior brand. I began flying with my brother in 1964 when he became an airline pilot and I was a wee lad. I don't remember all of his bags over the years, but he was proudest of his Travelpro. Highly Recommended.

I was planning 12 days in Italy and wanted to do it with one carry-on. I did some research and this bag looked like it might be the answer so I purchased it. What a great decision on my part. This bag is outstanding. You can pack a lot in it and it has outside pockets for the stuff you need to have fast access. It is the perfect size to fit in and out of various plane's overheads. (I flew four different air frames and the bag was a winner both in and out.) It handles incredibly well. Spinners are great. Handle is the boss. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great looking bag! Space? - meh. Wheels - nice
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2019
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Vintage GreyVerified Purchase
I'll try to go into some detail since its super hard buying a bag online!!

What a looker of a bag for sure!! My initial impression is that it really lives up to and exceeds the look and feel of what I expected from the Amazon listing. It feels like a quality bag at a price point half of a Tumi or B&S. I honestly feel that this bag competes in all the quality and features of a higher cost bag.

Space wise - it is 23.5in tall (wheels and handle included). I primarily fly on Southwest - so my overhead experience is 100% with them at this moment. I will update later. On Southwest 737 overhead bins, this bag fits 100% no problem even on the smallest old 737 bins. I was actually concerned when I bought the bag, as its taller than my old bag by maybe 1in...but this one is skinnier, and seemed to go deeper into the bins, despite being taller than my old bag. My first photo is the smallest 737 bin Southwest has. the 2nd is a newer 737-700, and they have even bigger overheads than that one.

Inside dimensions are where I feel this bag struggles. The listing on travelpro says its 46L...which I REALLYYYY don't believe. The handle takes up a ton of space inside the case, and the case itself is a bit narrow. I found I downsized a bit, and won't be able to stuff a ton of extra winter bulk items like I used to in my last bag. The picture I attached was a typical "fall weather" pack. 3 pairs of pants, 7 t-shirts, 7 mens underware, 4 pairs of socks, 1 workout shirt, 2 workout shorts, toiletry bag. I could prob stuff a light/medium jacket in there, or use vac-bags or some other packing aid if needed. Now that is the exact same pack as I could fit in my old bag (pic attached), but I felt like I had WAY more room in the old bag (was wider, but shorter, less handle bulk).

Wheels - this was a big selling point of the bag for me. The wheels do roll very nicely. I can *see* the idea behind the mag wheels, but I honestly don't know if they help or hurt. Yes the bag doesn't *ROTATE* as I roll it....but it does want to wander *all be it in a straight line* more than my old bag did...sooo...its a wash? The bag still wanders, but just in a different way than a normal spinner wanders.

Austin Johnson
5.0 out of 5 stars High quality/durability, and functional design
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Vintage GreyVerified Purchase
I purchased this carry-on luggage to replace an older hard-shell suitcase. I specifically looked for soft-shell, or fabric, suitcases, due to the damage that traveling on airplanes had caused to my hard-shell luggage. This Travelpro 21" carry-on is perfectly suited for this type of travel. It is designed from fabric which is durable enough for any travel, and has a well-designed and constructed interior wall support system. As a bonus, the luggage is very appropriate for style conscious business travelers such as myself.

The wheels are multi-directional, which means the luggage can be pulled behind on two wheels, or rolled alongside with four wheels. The handle completely collapses into the frame of the luggage when being stored. The handle mechanism allows the handle to easily be extended or collapsed with no extra "fiddling," and there are multiple lengths at which the handle can be locked, for various heights of users.

The interior of the bag is well designed, with an interior lining that can be unzipped to access the interior frame of the suitcase, or to store particular items within the suitcase itself for more secure travel. For example, I place a copy of my passport and a small amount of cash within the lining of the suitcase when traveling internationally. Inside the suitcase itself, the manufacturer has thoughtfully included a foldable garment bag for jackets or other items. There is also a "wet bag" for toiletries or medicines that can be zipped into the bag itself, or removed easily for storage in a bathroom vanity at your hotel, AirBnB, or guest quarters. The interior of the luggage lid contains a large zipper pocket perfect for storing delicate clothing, papers, or other small items. And finally, there is a handy USB/battery bank access port on the outside of the luggage for charging phones, iPads or laptops while waiting at the airport. This purchase does not come with a battery bank itself, so that will be an additional purchase which you can then pack in your bag and access from the exterior port.

Overall this is a very high quality piece of luggage/baggage, which is what I expected with the brand name and price point. I would purchase this item again, and will likely remain a customer of the brand for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, lots of useful spaces

Beautiful bag, and definitely built for travelers. Lots of useful compartments/zippers/cinches. My first spinner bag, and it's changed my life! Easy to stack items on top, wheels appear to be sturdy. I used it on my most recent travel (half work, half visiting family), and was able to comfortably pack for a week's worth of travel, and be prepared for two completely different climates (Midwestern cold and Florida heat).
The bottom/back does make you lose a bit of space due to where & how deep the handle storage/rack is. If you're able to fold things small and fit them in between the track, it's fine. If you have larger, non-bendable items, it can make an impact on what you can fit.

I used this suitcase for the first time. It is lightweight and nice looking.
The zippers are too hard to zip and one is broken already!
Now I can’t return it because I’m over the date by one day. Super frustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BAG!! This is the last carry on bag you will ever own!
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Vintage GreyVerified Purchase
This is the best carry on bag I have ever owned and used. The dimensions are PERFECT for a carry on, and it fits within current carry on regulations.

I like this even more than the Away hard shell luggage I tried. I found the Away luggage much harder to use. You have to place the Away luggage on a large flat surface so you can open the whole thing. The Away luggage hard shell also makes zipping up the luggage a bit more awkward. I love that you can place the Travelpro on a chair, desk, etc. and open it up easily.

I also purchased this to replace a previous Samsonite carry on spinner. Samsonite is the worst, they do not back up or stand behind their products at all. A wheel broke (this luggage was only used as a carry on), and Samsonite refused to fix it. They claimed we abused the luggage. We will NEVER purchase Samsonite again, I refuse to support companies who don't stand behind their products.

Upside
* The smoothest rolling I have ever felt - the magnetic wheels help you luggage glide gracefully and straight across ay path
* LIFETIME Warranty!! (this applies even if it's the airline's fault) - note warranty policies change, it was lifetime for me, but triple check before you purchase
* Zippers are smooth as SILK!
* Great construction quality, I don't expect this to ever break
* The handle is solid, yet not too large, and travels up and down the side of the suitcase very easily
* Lots of various compartments that are thoughtfully placed
* Option to use your own power bank if you choose to
* Lots of room inside to pack various items - space is not wasted with this bag!
* Waterproof toiletry bag that you can remove if you want to save space
* Integrated garment bag to help keep clothes wrinkle free; you can remove if you want to save space

Downside
* Cost - this will cost more than a lot of luggage you see out there; on the order of 2x - 4x what you may pay for something else
* While this is technically the legal carry one size, I've seen people take larger bags onto airplanes (I find this rude and annoying as they take up all the overhead space, but don't get me started)

Save yourself the headache of broken luggage. Get this bag and you will not regret it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice suitcase but service is questionable....
Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2019
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Vintage GreyVerified Purchase
This was the most expensive 25" suitcase that I have ever purchased. It looks nice and seemed well built and then the wheels failed after just 5 trips. They refused to align and the suitcase could not be rolled. I was not overly worried because I was protected by the Platinum Elite full coverage warranty. Here begins the adventure:
- I called Travelpro to find a repair location. They were not overly friendly on the phone but gave me an address about an hour from my house.
- I drove to the repair facility (because I needed the suitcase back for an upcoming trip in 2.5 weeks)
- The repair guy was fairly belligerent telling me the suitcase might not be covered - he clearly didn't understand my warranty and refused to call Travel Pro. He said he would call later and if approved the repair would take a week or two so with little choice I left it with him.
- My wife called to check on it after a week and he was down right nasty - telling her it would be done when it was done and pretty much not to bother him.
- She called back after two weeks and while he was a bit nicer this time, he told her that Travel Pro moved their parts location and it might be 3 months or more before the repair could be completed. The repair guy also recommended (unsolicited) that she buy a "different brand" and give up on Travelpro - unbelievable....
- I called Travel Pro today to see if they would just replace the suitcase and I've been on hold for 25 minutes - with no indication that anyone will ever answer.
- I realize that products fail and I would have been satisfied with a civil, reasonably time frame repair. Or, even a company that answered their phones and gave me an option.
- Now I'm heading out to but another suitcase for my upcoming trip(not a Travelpro). So much for my $300 plus investment and full coverage Platinum Elite warranty.
- I also have a newer 21" version of this suitcase where the outside zipper separated (in a pocket I don't even use). This happened after about 4 uses.
Really disappointed in this purchase - primarily due to the lack of after the sale service.
