3.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Animal Cruelty
By Madison bates on September 21, 2022
3.5 stars

This book started out strong, but unfortunately Kolesnik took the route I despise that many horror authors/directors take. Three times in the book there was animal cruelty. I can look past it once - although I really don't like to, and I would prefer it serve a purpose - but it occurred three times, and that was too much for me. Twice with dogs and once with a cat. And for me, the only "purpose" it served was to convince us how evil the character was. And that's frustrating. For that, I took a star off. Outside of the animal cruelty (mind you, each time it happened it was only a page, so I skimmed and skipped - I'm thankful I was able to do this), I was really enjoying the book. I thought the story was really intriguing, and I liked being in the main character's head. I would've like to get more, maybe 100 more pages diving into more of the character development. Maybe the before AND after. I also wanted more from Lim. I was disappointed we didn't get more in his head or get to learn more about him. But that could be a positive or negative criticism. I choose to see at as more positive because I'd rather want more from a book than wishing they would've left 100 pages out!

Anyways, I'll leave you with this - authors, please trust that your readers are smart enough to understand that your character is evil without having to throw in the "bad person kills animals" trope. I'm so tired of it. Trust that you're able to right an evil character without throwing in a scene that's really unnecessary.
