Trumping Democracy | Big Data

 (83)4.91 h 8 min201716+
Donald Trump's victory was engineered by ultra-conservative billionaire Robert Mercer. Buying Breitbart News, he inserted Steve Bannon into the campaign. Another Mercer company, Cambridge Analytica, micro-targeted the American voters most likely to swing for Trump. In the final days of the campaign, they deployed "dark posts", manipulative Facebook ads seen only by the user before disappearing.

This is scary stuff, and it explains exactly how, against all odds, Donald Trump pulled off his shocking victory. It you think those cute little Facebook quizzes are innocuous, like "What Superhero are you?", you need to watch this movie. Left or Right, understand that all future candidates can use this data to undermine democracy. I credit the Trump campaign for a brilliant, if unseemly, use of targeted "fake news" aimed at a small group of neurotic, insecure conservatives. You owe it to yourself to watch this.

1.0 out of 5 starsHorrible movie!

This was a horrible movie. Pure leftist propaganda and lies. Accusing conservatives of racism, proporting division between races and genders, I could go on and on. Everything they accuse conservatives of doing, THEY DO, including fake news, dividing groups, promoting hate, inciting violence. THIS MOVIE IS FULL OF BULL...

4.0 out of 5 starsThe Data That Turned The World Upside Down

Wow- But missed the point of getting people NOT TO VOTE!
Google- The Data That Turned The World Upside Down.

The world has been turned upside down. Great Britain is leaving the EU, Donald Trump is president of the United States of America. And in Stanford, Kosinski, who wanted to warn against the danger of using psychological targeting in a political setting, is once again receiving accusatory emails. "No," says Kosinski, quietly and shaking his head. "This is not my fault. I did not build the bomb. I only showed that it exists."

- indeed. Pay attention.

1.0 out of 5 starsSo much wrong with this

I got 3/4 through this before I just had to stop it.

So you're telling me that the election was stolen by one billionaire and his henchman? And that one company figured out how to datamine "around 2012"? Oh, and one website says Hillary say more truthful things even though she was under investigation by the FBI at the time and we've since found out so much more was going on - but not one peep about that.

Conveniently failed to mention the Obama campaign had their own datamining database, just as all campaigns do. Failed to mention that all advertisers do this. Failed to even mention that the firm just found a new way to do the same old thing. But it fit within their little echo chamber of "follow the crumbs"...

There is so much missing from this thing that it isn't even worth watching. IMO: Half of this is a lie of omission.

5.0 out of 5 starsJUST WATCH

I knew most of it yet it was just so compelling to see it all laid out this way. As usual the problem is that the people that need to see this the most will never watch and if they do they won't believe it.

4.0 out of 5 starsIt was bound to be controversial, but I noticed ...

I noticed most of the negative reviews screaming about “leftist propaganda” didn’t dispute the facts covered in this documentary.

The bigger point IMO isn’t WHICH side hijacked the election, it’s the fact it can be done at all. Either side can use these same tactics, and that’s something we should ALL be worried about, right or left. Special interest groups are a problem in campaigns.

This film covers the huge social media & disinformation campaign waged by Bob Mercer & Bannon on behalf of Trump (100 mil on FB for crying out loud). It follows the money trail & explains how they did it — and how we’re still dealing with the fallout today. We still see the same bad info being shared & believed by regular people. Total distrust of all journalists & media outlets, and it all stems from this.

(Side-note: Fact checking media or looking for bias is a good thing, we should all be researching major news sources. It’s the complete dismissal without even looking at facts posited by MSM that disturbs me.)

I gave it 4 stars b/c it was a good documentary, covered important little known info, but I had a few preference related qualms. The narrators voice bothered me a bit, sounded kind of digital. Not a big deal though.

5.0 out of 5 starsMust watch now we’re in the final year of campaigning

Must watch to avoid a repeat of 2016. Back then we could see friends and acquaintances Change before our eyes on social media. We even even told them they were being manipulated, then they were no longer friends. Imagine how the gullible and slightly educated will be three years later now Big Data know so much more about us? This should be required viewing by all voters. Unfortunately, those who most need this documentary will not watch or believe as they’re now completely brainwashed. But those who still can be saved from manipulation need to watch this posthaste.

2.0 out of 5 starsMakes The Left Look Just as Dumb as The Right

I’m not a Trump supporter by any means; actually I’m a liberal.

But this documentary is so badly put together and hypocritical that it makes me cringe as a progressive. But go ahead, keep dividing America (both sides are guilty).
