Wow, what another thrilling and addicting tale of romantic suspense by the incomparable Ms. Novak. I normally don't like stories with love triangles, especially when the "other woman" is an ex, and for that reason I was prepared to dislike David almost from the beginning. However, the reason why he wants to make it work with his twice divorced former wife was not what I was expecting and like Skye, I ended up falling head over heels in love with him too.
They were both so well fleshed and life-like that I couldn't help but adore them. I felt their fears, hopes, and desires as if they were my own. Then there was their chemistry and sexual tension which was practically palpable. For all that though the romance portion of this story always took a definite backseat to the mystery and suspense. If I recall correctly there was only one sex scene which was unexpected for everybody I think and over with almost before it began.
As for the story itself it's told from multiple points of view, including Oliver (Skye's would-be rapist) and his wife. And while there is a lot going on in this story, I never found any of it to be too overwhelming. I liked the pacing, the many twists and turns, and I loved the ending which had a surprise that I wasn't expecting. My only issue would be with a sub-plot surrounding another individual besides Oliver who has it out for Skye, which I completely saw coming.
If not for that though I would have definitely given this book five stars. I had such a hard time putting it down and literally read it in every spare second I could find. There was a great cast, plenty of chills and thrills, a wonderful love story, and some sobering subject matter that made me want to cry. This is the fourth novel I've read by Novak and she has yet to disappoint me. Now I can hardly wait for Jasmine's book and would highly recommend this story 😊

Four years ago... Skye Kellerman was attacked in her own bed. She managed to fend off her knife-wielding assailant, but the trauma changed everything about her life. As a result of that night, she joined two friends - also survivors - in starting The Last Stand, an organization to help victims of crime. But now... Her would-be rapist is getting out of prison. Skye knows that Dr. Oliver Burke hasn't forgotten that her testimony cost him his reputation - and his freedom. Sacramento detective David Willis, who investigated her case, believes Burke is a clear and present danger - and guilty of at least two unsolved murders. And now Burke is free to terrorize Skye again. Unless David can stop him. Unless Skye can fight back. Because Oliver Burke has every intention of finishing what he started. And that's a promise. Trust me.

Trust Me (The Last Stand Trilogy, Book 1)
I am a huge fan of Ms. Novak's; she's an automatic buy for me. Notwithstanding, I had a few moments when I felt the pace of this story was a tad slow, the tone a bit explainy because of the background details being fed in.
Skye Kellerman was the victim of an attack in her bedroom four years earlier and her testimony sent dentist Oliver Burke to prison. Among Burke's family and friends, Skye was the villain, Burke the innocent. Because of the viciousness of the crime, the repercussions to Skye, she and two other victims of violence started The Last Stand (TLS) a support and self-defence group dedicated to helping others. (Jasmine's and Sheridan's stories will be told in books two and three of the trilogy.) TLS has garnered much support, but also its share of detractors, including the local police chief.
Skye immerses herself in TLS, partly to help others, partly to focus on something other than her attraction to Detective David Willis, the policeman on the case that put Burke in prison, and partly to try to recover from the mental trauma she went through because of Burke.
Willis is strongly attracted to Skye, an attraction that borders on preoccupation, but he feels the right thing to do is get back with his divorced wife for the sake of their son. His wife, whom he does not love, suffers from MS and is constantly reminding Willis of her illness. She is also jealous that his work takes him away from the family.
The story opens with Burke, having turned informer, about to be released from prison early. Both Skye and Willis know he's a murderer and dangerous, and they search frantically to piece together cold case evidence that will put him away for good.
The mystery here is not who did it but how to prove him guilty.
Novak gives readers glimpses into the lives of Burke's family--his wife, his brother, his parents, as well as that of Willis' wife. By the end of chapter four, what began slow quickly morphed into a story I could not put down. I particularly liked that Trust Me centered on the psychological drama, kept the romance in perspective but didn't overwhelm with the touchy feely details of so many romantic suspense stories. Ms. Novak has turned into a consummate author of gritty crime novels.
I cannot wait to read Stop Me and Watch Me, both of which await on my nightstand.

This story has some crazy twists. The action and story are well developed and the pacing is great. There is a romantic element, but even that plays into the suspense of the story.
I liked that Skye was so strong but still open to emotion and helping others. David was a fascinating character full of internal conflicts that kept me on my toes. Oliver was messed up and the story showed it brilliantly.
The premise of the non profit was intriguing and the discussion with the Senator was one of my favorite parts of the book. A good read and interesting characters. I hope to read more about the other two omen from the non profit!

This book had my head reeling! There were so many elements that had me re-reading pages to make sure I didn't miss something I felt like I couldn't keep up at times, but man it had me keyed up with every page turned. Brenda knows hope to weave a tale of fear with way too much realism that it's not hard to connect with her characters or their stories on some level. I always feel personally invested with every Novak novel I read & I've already started the 2nd book in this series. I know I'll breeze through this one too!

Well-written suspense read

I have only just discovered Brenda Novak, and on this outing I will
certainly be reading more of her books. The characters grip you and
all the characters involved are so believable. The basis of the story
is that Skye, the main character narrowly escaped being raped and
murdered, the felon was caught and put away, but that is not the end, only
the beginning of gripping fear for Skye, when three years later she finds
out that this monster is going to be let free, and the fear that she
feels and build up of suspense waiting for the moment when she knows
that this man will come looking for her again. I recommend this book
and look forward to reading the second of this trilogy, make sure
you read them in order to get the full benefit. The next one being
"Stop Me" which is Jasmine's story.

I really enjoyed this book and hearty recommend it to any fans of this genre. My only criticism (and the reason I have it only 3 stars) was the rather predictable ending. Otherwise a great book.
