Product Description

Ethernet Surge Protector is a surge protection device (SPD) that is inserted inline on an RJ45 CAT6/CAT5/CAT5e cable to prevent damage of electronic networking equipment.

Powerful surges that the device protects against include direct lightning strikes, voltage spikes, or PoE overvoltages. Despite the primary protection (a direct strike to a line), the thunder arrestor also offers secondary protection, which will arrest EMF induced surges (nearby lightning ethernet).

Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are developed to overcome some of the disadvantages of diode-based protectors like energy handling capability and is suitable for almost all surge, whether high or low frequency, it can be intercepted by a gas discharge tube surge arrester so it provides a rigorous spark discharge control performance.

Ethernet Surge Suppressor TP302 use a Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) on all 4 pairs (8 wires). Gas discharge tubes dissipate the voltage transient through a contained plasma gas which harnesses excess voltage in the incoming power and releases it safely. It ensures the safety of a wide array of valuable components such as switch, router, modem, bridge, repeater, or any part of internet service network.

Mounting flange on the both sides of lightning suppressor allows easy mounting to a wall, network panel, cabinet, or rack attaching by screws (not included).

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved My Security Camera DVR - LOOK AT THE DAMAGED CABLE LEADING UP TO IT
By spacejumper on May 8, 2021
We had a huge lightning strike with a surge coming in from the Spectrum cable. We also had a huge (induced?) surge come in on a temporary outdoor network cable from temporary IP security cameras on a tree. The net cable was protected by this Gas Discharge Ethernet Surge Protector before it gets to the DVR. The cable was destroyed up to the arrester but NOT beyond. The DVR was apparently NOT damaged. I have included photos showing the destroyed cable areas and burned input side of the arrester so you can see how bad the surge was.

In the photos... The gray cable comes from the security camera tree and wraps around the base of another tree before it comes up under outside stairs. You will notice the strike blew the cable open at the base of the tree.

Under the stairs, the gray cable went through a simple coupler to a yellow cable which goes into a utility room through the window. The coupler was inside a ziplock bag and was twist tied up under the stairway platform. You will note that the strike blew open the coupler in the baggie and blew it off where it was hooked under the platform. It also blew one cable connector right out of the coupler and burned everything to a crisp.

From inside the window, the yellow cable goes to the lightning arrestor bolted to a well grounded metal electrical box in room. That end was burned where it enters the right side of the arrestor. (It did not blow it out of the connector. I manually disconnected it to better see the damage.) The right side of the arrester is charred and pitted.

The white network cables from the left end of the arrestor go about 15 ft to the security camera DVR in another room.

*** The DVR was NOT damaged from what I can tell so far. ***

I am amazed how much punishment this arrestor took and still protected the DVR. I have not opened the arrester yet but I'm going to consider it destroyed no matter what I find. $25 well spent! I just ordered more of them!

UPDATE: I opened the arrestor up and it was totally destroyed. A small price to pay for what it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well made compact product
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 17, 2020
As the title says this is a compact unit , it is unidirectional so it makes no difference as to whch is your in and your out on the line .
I have run speedtests both before and after installation and have found only the slightest of drop in speed . (could be within margin of error as i only ran a couple of tests to check)
Virgin 380 meg line down 38 up, dropped my line speed to 360 down , no change on the upload
There are mounting holes that are well thought out and you can even get away with button/dombed headed screws so as to not distort the mounting tabs, the screw heads do not impead the insertion of the RJ45 plugs.
It was not clear that the sockets were bidirectional so maybe a small leaflet in the box would have helped , or even adding it to the description above would suffice .
