Twelve Extraordinary Women offers a poignant and personal look into the lives of some of the Bible's most faithful women, teaching modern believers that true faith can leave a lasting legacy.
These women were ordinary, common, and in some cases even ostracized and rejected by society, yet each was made extraordinary by her life-changing encounter with God.
In Twelve Extraordinary Women, bestselling author and Bible teacher John MacArthur shows us that the God to whom they were so faithful is the same God who continues to mold and guide us today.
As you meet these women in Scripture and get to know more about their lives and characters, they will challenge you, motivate you, encourage you, and inspire you with love for the God whom they trusted, served, and loved, teaching us that:
- Our personal struggles and temptations are the very same kinds of trials that all believers of all ages have confronted
- Even in the midst of our trouble, God remains eternally faithful
- Through God, anyone can become extraordinary
From Eve to the Samaritan Woman, these twelve women eachserve as reminders of both our frailty and our potential. Together, they all point us to Christ and His grace.

This one is different. MacArthur (thankfully) doesn’t talk from his ‘feelings’ but constantly and consistently lines everything up with the word of God. I find myself weeping at the end of the chapter as I see my own life in each of the women that God, in his wisdom and goodness, put in the Bible. Anyone that thinks the Bible belittles women needs to read this (and do the workbook).
If you have been in the feminist movement, you may not like everything. But like I said, MacArthur lines it up with the Word of God. And your beef is with God, himself.
Pray and give this one some time. It will be worth it!
(The workbook is interesting. Daily readings are helpful, some questions and a little journaling if you like that -
It also has some applications to life and helps you understand scripture and scripture vocabulary. Some questions you may find redundant. However, sometimes it is great to stop and rethink them as you go.)
Eve was a treatise on the Fall and the human condition and promise of a future redeemer. All good, but not the purpose of the book.
Mary was a treatise against Mariology and its unbiblical premise, which I agree with, but not the purpose of the book. I see most of the women he writes about as opportunities for him to preach doctrine and speculate in a way that undermines the purpose of the book, which is to recognize and honor ordinary women God has chosen for His purposes and grace that made them extraordinary in their commitment to Him.
Anna was so speculative, it was hard to read. MacArthur speaks speculations as facts, not opinions for consideration. Usually a biblical scholar whose premise for doctrine is always based on scripture, his book had very little of that standard position of teaching and was very disconcerting to read.
I have led dozens of bible studies over the past 30 years and recommended this read to my current group trusting MacArthur’s firm grasp as a biblical teacher. However, as we review it together, I have to acknowledge my distaste for his approach, presumptions and grand speculations. A real miss for MacArthur. Pass on it.
