The book is good as far as the contents and intentions, but it’s extremely too long. If you’re one of those who loves to read then that’s fine, but I like to get to the point. Also, if you don’t have an extremely high college vocabulary, you’re gonna spend more time in the dictionary than the book. I have quit reading because of this, not everyone has the ability to to have a huge vocabulary. I feel that any time you give direction, guidance or any kind of advice in Christ or anything related to understanding the nature of, it should be written or explained so that everyone, including people who haven’t been to college, can understand it. I apologize if I sound rude, but I feel this way because I want everyone to learn about Christ and books like this one makes it difficult when it should be easy. So, that’s why I’m not recommending this book to anyone. If you’re looking for a good book that easier to understand check out “god’s at war”, also on Amazon.

The vast majority of this book is the author's speculation on the backgrounds and behaviors of Jesus' disciples, which I found misleading on the whole. I, too, engage in envisioning the lives of these men and in so doing I fill in the many gaps in their stories as well as what motivated their actions. When I do so in my teaching and in my writing, I preface it with a statement such as, "Imagine with me for a moment...." McArthur presents his suppositions as fact.

First I want to clarify that the book does speculate and make educated guesses concerning the disciples and their characteristics based on what we can read about them in the Bible. As long as the reader understands that the assumptions made are conjecture rather than Biblical fact, the book is full of interesting discoveries and historical references that make for some wonderful theological discussions. I do not always align with Macarthur's theology but it is rare to completely agree with someone on every Biblical topic.
That being said, the book is well written. I poured over the pages fascinated with the points given and felt like I had a much better understanding of the disciples' purpose as a whole and as individuals. Highly recommended.

The book gives excellent insight into the lives of the 12 men Jesus chose to plant his church. Ordinary, nothing particularly special. MacArthur takes a few liberties in writing but sticks with the facts. Usually when he offers an idea or opinion he points that out. I enjoy his writing. Worth the read regardless. Why do the research when it's been done for you. Used this book while teaching the first 2 chapters of Mark.

MacArthur helps us draw several conclusions about personality traits common to man and how important it is that as Christians we might by God's grace lead self-controlled, upstanding and godly lives, no matter which of the personality traits our Lord has bestowed upon each of us. This book is an effective inspiration to those hungry for an intimate understanding of Scripture through the eye witnesses of Christ's ministry. I would also recommend the classic title MacArthur cites as support, The Teaching of the Twelve by Bruce.

"Twelve Ordinary Men" is a must for all Christian households. That such men could have accomplished so much under the Lord's provision and tutelage is as much of a miracle as the feeding of the thousands etc. John MacArthur's book (he is a prolific author) opens the readers eyes to much important and fascinating information. The existence of so many fine modern day Bible teachers is testament to the continuance of miracles.
