7.01 h 24 min201613+
Viktor and Volodya are two men who have been appointed local sheriffs by the mayor in the town of Stara Zburyevka, Ukraine. While dealing with crimes such as stolen ducks and drunken neighbors, the news about the war is slowly creeping in on them through their televisions and the invitations to join the army.

The film reminded me of the work of Roberto Minervini (e.g., Stop the Pounding Heart). In essence, a very similar approach. A documentary that is more than a documentary. A chance to immerse yourself into the everyday life of a Ukrainian village during the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian invasion and occupation. Beautifully and masterfully filmed. Also similar to Minervini's work is the artists' respect, even admiration towards the 'little men' who are the protagonists, be it village sheriffs, or a local drunk who ends up in jail. Good work, all around.

This movie is not easy to watch, but it shows life of ex-soviet rural area as it is. Characters/roles are very familiar to everyone lived in USSR. I assume some people in the 1st world would judge characters, but you should always keep in mind, that residents of Stara Zbruevka had completely different life experience.

Ukrainian metamorphosis
An excellent illustration of Ukrainian metamorphoses. It’s a such a difficult, slow and mentally painful process to get rid of the former habits and embrace the challenge of the nowadays. What to celebrate, glorify, obey?- every film character has to decide himself.
