Amor Towles is the author of New York Times bestsellers RULES OF CIVILITY and A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW. A muito tempo que eu não deparava com um livro tão gentil e adorável, e quaisquer elogios que eu tente fazer a ele, não farão juz aos personagens e história aqui contada.

Com um enredo aparentemente comum, estamos no mais fabuloso hotel da Rússia, aquele que recebe desde o burguês até os membros da KGB, e portanto, não é estranho que um conde condenado a prisão domiciliar, como punição por ter escrito um poema contra a revolução russa, ali venha a residir, ainda que sob a pena de lá viver pelo resto da vida.

É nesse contexto que o leitor passa a conhecer a figura de Aleksandr Rostov e de todos aqueles que o cercam, desde seu empenho em transformar o Hotel Metropol em lar, até o modo de conciliar o cotidiano para que nunca o tédio venha imperar, e é assim, com uma paciência e altruísmo imenso, que conheceremos Nina, Marina, Andrei, Emile, Anna e claro, Sofia. Que não apenas dão vida ao Metropol, mas que parecem pertencer a classe de gente mais cativantes e fieis que há.

Se o Conde está preso, o leitor também passa a estar, pois ali também somos transportados, e vivenciamos desde a cozinha do chef Emile, até aos jantares de repressão realizados pelo alto comando do partido comunista. É, de tal maneira, um livro de pequenos prazeres, onde Tchekov, Dostoiévski, Tostói, Bulgakov, Gógol e Gorki nos acompanham para uma vida de amizade, afeto e esperança, com sinais de felicidade e reviravoltas. A mim, uma das melhores leituras do ano, adoraria continuar a saber do cotidiano de Rostov.

Quanto a estética, folhas amarelas de qualidade.
