Ryan North is the (New York Times bestselling, Eisner-award winning) creator of Dinosaur Comics, the co-editor of the Machine of Death series, and the author of both "To Be or Not To Be" and "Romeo and/or Juliet": the choose-your-own-path versions of Shakespeare's plays. He also wrote "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" for Marvel Comics, who you might know from their movies about an iron man. I've read all the trades for this Squirrel Girl series and enjoyed them, this was no different. It's a fun story, probably my second favorite behind vol 3, I love clone plot lines and it was hilarious how they acknowledged the other clone plots Marvel has done over the years. While this was a great read, I think SG is better read as a physical book. I read the digital version of this and the small print sections on the bottom of most of the pages that are a big part of the humor sometimes, if you've read these SG comics before you know what I'm talking about, are very hard to read because even when I had it on read panel by panel mode, when it came to those sections it didn't make it any bigger or easier to read. And on my regular kindle fire seven inch screen the pixel quality just wasn't good enough for me to make out what most of those parts even say, and that's a big part of the SG experience. Maybe I'm missing something that I could change in the settings or something, I just got my kindle fire so I'm still figuring out all the little tricks and settings, but if it takes that much effort to be able to enjoy something in digital, I think it would be worth it to get a real book. Overall this is a great story with good action and that wonderful humor that sets Squirrel Girl apart and I completely recommend it, but I would invest in a physical copy of this graphic novel and all the other SG comics as well.

This is the sort of comic that Marvel used to publish ALL THE TIME. Yes, the press overworked the stock "Super Heroes With Super Problems," but those heroes did good because, by golly, it is the right thing to do. And we readers had fun.

Sure, they had problems (usually soap opera problems) but they tried to rise above them. Doreen has her problems too, but she's more well-adjusted than the usual angst-filled Marvel teenager. And like the early Marvel heroes, she's not the most physically heroic looking, she doesn't look like John Romita drew her, and she can be a little cocky at times.

But she's still a cutie. Not as cute as Tippy-Toe, but still pretty darned cute. With a great theme song, I must say.

This was an excellent standalone graphic novel of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. I think you could still enjoy this without having read any of the comics (although why wouldn't you, they're awesome), but this is definitely a better read if you're already familiar with the characters. It's reminiscent of other What If one-offs where Squirrel Girl goes against a bunch of the Marvel heroes and villains. However, as Squirrel Girl doesn't have a hair on her tail that's evil, they get around this by accidentally creating a potentially evil clone of herself while helping out Iron Man. All of the humor and excellent art are on full display here, and I'd highly recommend it.

If you like Squirrel Girl, you're gonna love this. And if you're worried that it's just gonna be a sea of obscure Marvel references, don't be- SG is literally the only Marvel comic I read and I still got all the jokes. (Although a low-key obsession with Marvel would make them even funnier, I'm sure.)
The art is great, too, and all the women in this wear costumes that aren't boob-centric, which is nice.
