Unbreathable is a tale of love, redemption, and sacrifice, and one girl's struggle to find her place in a world where she doesn't belong.

Ahh, UNBREATHABLE. Where do I even begin? I devoured this book in 2.5 hours, which is quick even for me. The writing style was lovely, formal enough to seem regal but still utterly approachable. For those who feel the short sentences and short chapters jilted the reading experience, I utterly disagree. For someone who speaks as formally as Lissa, they worked very well to keep the writing from being bogged down. I did start to get slightly irritated by the one. Word. Emphasis, but that's just a personal taste. Ms. Laziaf can't really help that her writing tic is one that I personally don't like - she'd probably tire quickly of my romance with the em-dash.

Lissa is a compelling main character, and I'd like to remind those who call her overemotional or boring that she is a seventeen year old girl. She's my age and handles the situations she's tossed into remarkably well for such a youngster. Yes, she makes some poor decisions driven by overemotion, but seriously, what teenage girl doesn't? She does very well. I'm impressed by her. Four for you, Lissa, you go, Lissa.

Rowan and Julian are both unique and yet similar, which is actually really cool. I enjoyed how Lissa relates emotionally/personality-wise to both while they relate physically to each other. It made for an interesting dynamic between the three. Julian is very much the sweet-but-troubled boy next door, while his almost-twin brother Rowan is the pretty and dashing bad-boy type. (Hint: I pick Rowan.)

The love triangle was definitely focal, but done very well. I didn't feel that it was unnatural within the story and I really do like the way it was portrayed. Most love triangles come at the problem with the POV character thinking "I love X, but I also love Y! X has [positive quality,] but also [negative quality, which Y does not possess.] Y is soo [positive quality], though there is that [negative quality] that bothers me..." and it ends up as a laundry list of pros and cons that leaves me bored out of my mind. This portrayed a seventeen year old's emotions far better, with the protagonist not facing the conflict between X and Y as a decision based on them but rather on her own emotions and how she feels about each. She's confused by how she feels, confronted with her emotional disloyalty, and tries to justify it away. It feels very real, and even a girl like me who gets bored by romance easily could enjoy it.

I feel like I should address the predictability issue. Yes, I pretty much guessed all of the twists, but to be honest there have been two pieces of media in the last seven years where I haven't, so I'm not really upset. What matters more is that predictable or not, it was done well, and I really enjoyed this.

Lissa's coming of age

A come of age interesting story. Lissa is half woman and half alien, caught in the middle of a war for air, for love, for survival; she struggles through betrayals, hate, loneliness, lost. She learns love, strength, fight and, in the end, acceptance, tolerance, the value of people and the importance of letting go.
The whole book is about her, the other characters, the setting and sometimes even the plot itself are not so important in the economy of the book. Somehow, because Lissa is so carefully built and detailed, it does not matter.

Conflicts and other action, including romantic, among the races is very good and very interesting.
Story has a fit ending but leaves lots of room for a sequel or two.

Unbreathable is a super exciting read. There were many wow moments--especially towards the end where my eyes were just glued to the pages (erm . . . screen) because I a) didn't want to miss a single thing, b) was extremely worried about what could happen to the characters, and c) was bracing myself for tears. Thankfully, the flood of tears never had the opportunity to release (though a few drops were threatening to do so--I felt really sorry for one of the characters, and I was really worried something bad would happen to him)!

First, I want to say that the writing in Unbreathable was wonderful. I have a thing for good descriptions, and this book had them!

"Maybe it wishes it were orange, for it sputters and reaches up to the sky with angry fists of blue and purple. It still doesn't know we can't all get what we want."

I don't know exactly how to describe why the writing was really good--it just seemed like the author knew how write well. It kept me engaged. It made me highlight a few passages simply because I liked how they sounded.

"Sometimes," he says softly, his fingers trailing along the wing, "you only see the beauty of something once it's broken."
Sounds great, right?

Now . . . onto the romance . . .

There's a love triangle. Wait, don't turn away! I know many people loathe love triangles, or at least prefer to not read them, but this was a really good one. The one in this book made me realize deeper meaning and uses of having a love triangle in a book. It can give a character a choice--like a crossroads--between, usually, good and evil, heart and expectation, right and wrong. The two choices in Unbreathable were complete opposites of one another, but they were really similar in some ways. It was like Lissa was only in love with one guy, but was torn between the light and dark versions of him. It felt like it was important for Lissa to be torn between two guys.

In short, I thought the love triangle was really done, so please, please don't not-read Unbreathable because you're hesitant about that part of the story.

Why else should you not miss out on this book?

1) The world is so cool. If you like a really interesting and different world, this is the book for you.

2) Strong, admirable heroine. Lissa definitely belongs in the ranks of strong great heroines.

3) Brilliant ending. I love strong conclusions, and this book had one of the. Plus, it was a moment where the strength Lissa had shined. (note: I don't know how much ARCs can change before it's released, but the ending may have changed.)

4) Likable characters. I fount it hard to dislike even the seemingly-all-evil characters.

5) . . . Which reminds me, the evil characters were pretty bad, but they had moments where they seemed to have hearts.

6) I made some connections to two awesome series. The type of love triangle was like the one in Shatter Me, and the world and queen reminded me a little bit of the Lunar Chronicles. So, if you like a book that is a cross between those two series, but is still its own story, you should check this one out!

7) The romance. I forgot to mention just how romantic this book is. It's very swoon-worthy.

8) I don't usually write reviews this long. The fact that I could write all this about a book shows that it was worth my time, and that it will be worth yours, too.

Overall, Unbreathable was a really great book that many readers would enjoy. The combination of the great writing, characters, writing, and world made this book a well worthy read.
