I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, New York Times bestselling author Charles Soule is a writer of novels (graphic and otherwise), comics, screenplays and stories of all types. He plays the guitar fairly well and speaks at least one language.
Born in the Midwest, he spent his early years in Michigan before moving to Asia, where he spent time living in Hong Kong, Manila and Singapore. Stints on the East Coast followed, before settling in New York (apparently) for the long haul.

I liked this work a great deal. It offered a great deal of intense story-driven moments and some great action scenes, and the art was pretty good (I won't say it was incredible, but it was very good). The story is intriguing, and after this first volume, a short arc has been fulfilled while leaving a lot of big questions unanswered in a fulfilling but still tantalizing way. I am perfectly satisfied with the serving size here and with the size of the book, and am happy to have added this to my shelf. Glad to have taken a chance on something new.

This is a review about the book itself. Story seems alright. Art seems alright. Not the direction I thought it would go.

Book is too tightly bound so you miss some art towards the center of the page. Would have loved to grab individual issues of this book but missed #1 at comic shops.

Thought it was a very very poor decision to have one of the most disgustingly designed two page spreads on literally page 2. With the number of people listed on the front page you would think they would agree not to make a page look like that.

Over use of dialogue. Painfully so. I wanted to shout “SHUT UP” whenever the multiple characters got into their endless diatribes. I don’t think the concept is all that well thought out, just poorly portrayed. Art is very good(?)
Its not that interesting, i’ll be stopping here, plenty of better works of fiction out there.

The United States of America is always in the news, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad reasons. What if it wasn’t in the news at all? What if it shut its doors, nobody gets in and nobody gets out. Not a peep out of one of the worlds bigger economies for years and years.

It’s hard to imagine isn’t it?

Well imagine no more! Undiscovered Country takes the USA and literally builds a bloody big wall around it. They call it The Sealing. The world outside carries on, splitting itself in to two factions, Euro-Afrique and Pan-Asia, they haven’t heard from their America cousins for over a century until out of the blue they receive a message.

They are being watched, the Americans know all about the hardships outside their walls, they know a virus from the sky is killing millions and could lead to the collapse of society. They have a cure but they aren’t coming out from behind their walls, the outside is being invited in.

It’s a trap you scream! It does kinda sound a bit too good to be true, but undeterred Euro-Afrique and Pan-Asia send in a small team to the given co-ordinates to see what can be found out. What they discover makes all the Mad Max films including the new one look like Peppa Pig. It’s a land of pure madness ruled by the Destiny Man.

People and I use that term very loosely are horribly mutated, crazed and sociopathic they roam and kill riding upon giant sharks, crazy looking starfish and every vehicle know to man except it has been pimped, imagine the shuttle Atlantis with balloons attached, cars driven by teeth, you get the idea.

Follow the expedition as they land and quickly realises things are definitely going to go from bad to worse, they discover an America unlike anything on the maps. Getting across the country is not going to be easy when everything there is trying to kill or enslave them.

It’s brutal, it really is, definitely not for those feint of heart but it is colourful, fast paced and really intriguing. What I really liked as well was throughout the book between the chapters there was snippets from people who lived outside the zone, where they were when The Sealing occurred, people pondering if American rock continued, American sports teams stuck in Korea unable to return, its kind of fascinating to learn how people had to adapt.

So yes I did like this, I’m already imagining it as bloody bonkers Netflix series, its definitely worth a read.

I must say I was very excited to read this and thought that it could do some really cool conceptual things about isolationism and the American mindset, and the set-up sounded very original. But I must admit to feeling a little disappointed. The art is really cool, and it definitely feels like it is setting up to be a rip-roaring adventure story, but for me the individual tropes in it lacked a certain spark. It feels a little teenage-dystopia like, and many of the things in it are lifted directly from other franchises; the dystopian aesthetic (Mad Max), being forced to climb up a wall tied to a rope (batman), mysterious train (polar express/snow piercer/rick and morty) to name a few, and lack (perhaps until a later volume) any logical or cohesive explanation. There is also a scene where it is revealed that there is a kind of quest with separate stages that they will have to go on, and I just found it to be a moment of 'here are all the issues you will have to buy'. There was also quite a bit of flag-waving about how great America is right at the end, which given everything they had just seen does come off a bit incongruous. Despite all this, I may buy the next volume as I think there is a capacity for the story to engage me a bit more. Readers searching for a graphic novel horror book that also provides an original commentary on America may be better off with Paknadel's 'Redfork'.
