The twins in battle together

The Lysander twins, children of Ryck Lysander, Commandant of the Federation Marines, are very different in some ways— Esther is driven to succeed at everything her father did, to be awarded the Federation’s Nova medal (the equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor), and to rise to the rank of Commandant of the Corps. Her brother Noah, while also a Marine, was happy to remain in the enlisted ranks as a tanker, good stand enjoying his job.

Less good, albeit realistic, was the effect on his marriage— deployments and unaccompanied tours are rough on marriages, in reality as well as here in fiction.

When Esther was given command of the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 3d Marine Division, its sergeant major had just retired, and she knew just who she wanted as a replacement— her twin, now a first sergeant. That created some issues, both because of their relationship and because he wasn’t a sergeant major and wouldn’t be for some years. She insisted and pulled some strings, and got her way.

The result was their serving together as battalion was sent into one of the bloodiest battles in two centuries of Marine history.

Good series with some flaws.

The first book seemed more YA than an adult novel. I'm not adverse to cursing in a book, but that in the first volume seemed out of place with the rest of the series. There was a LOT of emphasis put on Noah's relationship and marriage and next to none on Esther's. It just showed up as a done deal. This lacked balance. For such a long series, I would have liked more emphasis on character development--there was some--and less on warfare, but that is just me. The major flaw in the series was all of the errors--and there were a LOT of them. YES, I know I'm putting LOT in all caps. However, when the author thanks the editors (which is highly appropriate) I wish there had been some decent editing. There were not enough errors to stop me from reading the books, but at times, it was very close. Yes, there are words that are pronounced the same that are spelled differently.....or they should be.

Buy these! Best military fiction ever.

Lt. Colonel Brazee is unique amongst military sci fi authors - he has no need to imagine what daily life is like for his characters since he lived it himself during his own Marine Corps career.
As a result, the relationships depicted and uncomfortable interactions between enlisted, senior NCOs and officers are spot on. The unique nature of friendships forged in the crucible of battle are the deepest and strongest a person can develop - often more so than familial or marital and it is those character interactions which are so often poorly described in the traditional "Pew! Pew! Pew" style which appeals to the unwashed masses of bone spur cadets.
If you are a veteran, I stone guarantee you that you will recognise yourself, your friends, and your unit in all of Colonel Brazee's books - and that you have many hours of enjoyable reading experience ahead of you.

Buy them all.

Really great and exciting series

I‘m reading all of the author’s books in this series and it’s hard to stop and take a break. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories.
