Katelyn had a great life living with her mother until her sudden death, and was sadly ripped away from it all, only to realize that she had to move into a small town with a grandfather she knew nothing about and her whole life was about to change. This was not good. I did take pity on her. I just couldn't help but wonder why she never seemed to talk much about her mom to anyone. Being in Arkansas, and having odd and strange rules such as having to be home and in the house before night falls, I would think she would get lonely. I know she did. Wolf Springs had to be strange to her and I know it had to be hard, being from Cali, and trying to find something to do in a no-town ghost town.
Katelyn did happen to find two great people to find amazing friendships with. Trick and Cordelia. They were both always there for her and looking out for her, teaching her all the ropes of the country ways. But Katelyn knew something wasn't right. The whole having to be in by dark thing wasn't right. She begged for answers and everyone played dumb. I knew something big was about to happen. I just didn't know it was going to create such a mess...

There was so much potential in this book. It is written well and i like Kat and her Grandad. BUT...
Firstly i was intrigued by the whole cirque du soleil aspect and Kat being a dancer and gymnast. But nothing ever comes of it. She never dances or practices, it never goes past Kat thinking about it in brief moments of solitary pondering. The whole thing added some shades of colour to the story, but it felt pointless because nothing came of it. I was hoping for some romantic scene where Trick or Martin watch her dance or maybe she joins a team and meets new people. Maybe it could have been something that brought her and her grandad closer together as well. Like i said, so much potential but ultimately....nada!
Then there was her Grandfather. He seemed so mysterious at first, you sense secrets and skeleton in the closet. He seemed mean. But then in a matter of seconds, literally, he starts reminiscing and calling her honey. Just like that. So much more could have been done. He was so cold at first. So that didnt make sense to me.
Kats relationship with Trick progresses ok. But what does he do? He drives her to school. Thats it! He has the party at the end and you suddenly learn he is loaded and lives with both his parents. But you learn nothing about him at all! And he never acts or is put in a situation that would allow you to learn more about him.
Cordelia...well...she mainly just freaks out A LOT. We see more of her so its apparent she is the focus. But again we learn hardly anything about her other than the obvious. Nothing about her background, why she quite cheering, why she and her sisters dont get along, where her mother is. Zilch zero nada!!
And what the hell was up with Justin?!? He just pops up randomly and then they make out...you learn nothing!!! You learn more about his brother Jesse!
And then Kats friend from home...again pretty pointless. It didnt really add anything at all.
I read the book and still feel like all the characters are strangers. The book needed to be longer, more in depth. It felt rushed particularly at the end.
So i bet your wondering why ive given it 4 stars?? Thats because regardless of all the above i read the whole thing in one sitting and i cant wait to read the next. Maybe thats because this book was so vague i rushed it hoping it would suddenly reveal more but was left unsatisfied so am now desperate for the next. If that is the case, well, the job of a book is to make you want more. And this book definitely does do that. I truly hope the next one fills in some of the many many blancs!! Fingers crossed! x
